The season began with an exciting 16-14 last minute win over Hamilton Garfield. With the tigers trailing 14-3 late in the fourth quarter. quarterback Bingo Cranford connected with Thomas Weaver for a touchdown pass and two point conversion. The tigers next victory was a 8-6 squeaker over P.H.S.L foe Taft. The highlight of the season for the players, coaches and fans, had to be their 42-6 annihila- tion of Columbusys Central High. In the game running back Iay Isabell ran for over 200 yards and two touchdowns. Ronnie Crawford also chip'ped in a pair of touchdowns while the de- fense stifled Central. The rest of the season dtd'nt shine nearly as well on the tigers. They lost heartbreakers t0 Walnut Hills 7-6 and Pur- cell 17-14. The coaching staff of Rusche. Shestina, and Willis, should once again be commended for their dedication. This years MVP award went to a most de- serving recipient, Kermit Smith. Kermit was a defensive specialist even though he did catch a touchdown pass against Hughes. The defensive player of the year award was won by Dwight ttMad Dog Porter. The offensive player of the year award went to senior Eric McDonald. Chalman On the Chinese calendar 1978 was the year of the horse, but at Withrow it was definitely the year of the Tiger. The basket- ball team finished the season with an impressive 20-2 mark. and an unblemished 11-0 mark in the P.H.S.L. Add to that the district title and the runner-up in the sectional. The season was one of sold out games and excitement the fans and players will not soon forget. The season began with the Tigers nipping Purcell 70-66. With the score 68-66, Kenny tCornbreadt Hammonds stole the ball and slammed it home for the win. It was the beginning of a trend which traveled with them to Middletown for the next game. This was to be the game in which LaSalle Thompson first made his presence felt, The Tigers won the game 69-67, with LaSalle completely dominating the game with 27 points and 30 rebounds. The coming weeks saw the Tigers surmount an impressive winning streak Fan support was tremendous, as it was nearly impossible to get tickets to many games. Due to the multitude of fans, Withrow's most enthusiastic Athletic Di- rector T. Melloy moved the Taft game to the Gardens. The con- fines were to the Tigers liking as Taft never was in the game and lost, 85-64 At the end of the regular season the teams record stood at 15-1, and were ranked in in the city. The tournament began against a pesky Roger Bacon team. After getting off to a slow start, the Tigers got in gear and won handily, 69-53. Next was Walnut Hills, a team we'd beaten twice already er make that three times. The next game was against GCL powerhouse Elder, a game which would show what the Tigers were made up of. Trailing by 18 points at halftime, the Tigers faced an up- hill battle many thought impossible. These same people would be saying truly amazing at the final score which read WITH ROW 59, ELDER 53. It had to be one of the greatest comebacks in Withrow history. The black limousines which brought the players to the Gardens, would now move on up the road to Dayton. Mr. DlAmico and the school rallied around the team which accomplished what no other Public high school had done in 14 years. The first game in Dayton sent the Tigers against the pow- erful Vikings of Princeton, After regulation the score was tied and the game moved into overtime. After some key shots by Cornbread the final score read WITHROW 60, Princeton 59. Next, the underated Buccaneers 0f Xenia. After three over- times the Tigers prevailed 63-61, in a game few could forget. The teams final game was against a strong Kettering Alter team. The Tigers missed a shot at the state title, losing a con troversial and poorly officiated game, to say the least. But this was not the end of a dream, for no sooner had the game ended, the fan and player began to talk of next year. Bacon player hails to LaSallei District Champs P.H.S.L. Champs To talk of the basketball team you must talk of the players and coaches of which it is made The cream of the rich crop was 6-10, LaSalle Thompson who rose head and shoulders above his opponents. He lead the City in rebounding for the second consecutive year. He was named first team all city, first team all district and second team all-state. You could hear the fans saying to others, uhe's still only a junior . The teams leading scorer was senior co-Captain Kenny tCornbreadi Hammonds. His 19 points a game and rebound- ing earned him all city honors. His best game was by far a 31 point, 18 rebound game against Walnut Hills. The teams leader was three year starter and co-captain. Mike Iarman. His scrappy hustling, passing. and long range bombing will be sorely missed next season. The other starting guard was Senior Ieff Knoxi A fine shooter and ball-handler, Jeff will also be missed. Junior Bobby Graves started at the other for- ward and enjoyed his finest game against Elder, scoring 18 points. Off the bench came the one handed shot of llBingo Cranford, the highgrching shot of Melvin Cox. and the long arms of Lamar tFredi Fredricks. The rest of the bench was also heard from as their vocal support and practice time was much needed. And last, but certainly not least, head coach Mike Ferone, and assistants B. Ignatz and G. Hughes. Ferone and his assis- tants did and excellent job of building and developing a team which most definitely will be heard from next year. Bingo puts up a one hander. Preston owmwmwpwwe onma .4 36 5TH IN P.H.S.L. The boy's swim team started the season with many question marks this year as only one swimmer returned from last years team. With an extremely young, inexperienced team it seemed unlikely that the Tigers could win any meets. However, this spirited young team proved to be exceptionally hard-working and dedicated. This enabled them to come through with two victories, thus improving on the record of last year. Withrowis wins both came at the expense of Woodward. One was a very close meet at their pool and the other was a smashing win for Withrow at home. Several other meets were closely contested, but the Tigers were hurt in inexperience and lack of depth. The swimming Tigers concluded their season in the HB Sec- tional Meet at Princeton High School with an outstanding team performance Tiger swimu mers unexpectedly won heats in several events, and every member of the team achieved personal best times in individual events and on relays. The future of this team appears bright if it can maintain the momentum gained this year and if Coach Hotter can have another good year recruiting new swimmers. Only one mem- ber of the team graduates, so they should start next year with a strong nucleus. The two top performers on the team, both Iuniors, were Chris Mork in the backstroke and individual medley events, and Barry Preston in the distance freestyle events. Rapidly improv- ing sophomores Curtis Harris and Brian Mor- gan will also he heard from in the future. Other Tiger swimmers to watch out for are Steve Boettger in freestyle distance events, and Kee- nan Rose and Iames McLean in freestyle sprints. The 1978 baseball team enjoyed an outstanding sea- son, compiling a respectable 19-9 mark For the second straight year they finished at the top of the P.H.S.L. with a 9-3 mark. Outstanding teams always include outstanding indi- viduals, and the Tigers were no different. Leading the way was M.V.P. Bobby Harris, who gained all P.H.S.L. honors for his .395 batting average. Junior Dana Shanks again batted over .400 and is presently among Withrowis all time leading hitters. Dana, along with Senior outfielder Mike Henderlight, was named first team all City. Mike and Kermit Smith were the teams co-captains. Sophomores ueually don't make much of an impact. but Bruce Sanderfer was a definite exception. Bruce set school records for a sophomore with six wins and four saves on the mOund, to go along with a 1.27 ERA. Coach Chambers once again did an exceptional job. The plot revolves around a kidnapped Child, who proves so offensive to his kid- nappers, that they almost pay his family to take him back. Thalian regulars Andre Per- due, Kevin Hodge, Stephanie Ball, Wanda Tingle and Gary Hopkins turned in mar- velous performances under the direction of Mim Stefanik. Assemblies were held to en- tertain, to commemorate, to share school spirit, and to honor academic achievement. Withrow students were entertained this year by a wide variety of events. Most popular seemed to be the Sunshine Express, 3 rock group out of Columbus, Ohio, who enter- tained Withrow students twice this year. Withrowites seemed most appreciative of their efforts as they clapped along. A group of U.C. students put on a production of A Midsummer Nights dream, by William Shakespeare. Al- though the production was rather lengthy, students seemed to enjoy it. Another cultural event featured a modern dance group Students seemed to appreciate the ability of the dancers and reacted as a mature audience. Football and Basketball presented their awards to out- standing players in front of the student body. In addition, the basketball team held a pep rally and a special assembly in recognition of their achievements in the playoffs. Cum Laude welcomed their new fall members with a spe- cial assembly, It seemed more than fitting that academic achievements be honored with a scheol-wide assembly. In addition to faculty and students, the parents of Cum Laude members were invited to share in the event. Several commerorative assemblies were also held this year. A Thanksgiving assembly was held to remember the reason for the holiday as well as to display the homeroom baskets which are distributed to the needy. 122 DAILY ACTIVITIES 124 125 No matter how hard we try, we know we are not go- ing to make everyone happy with this annual. To make up for that, we,ve given you this page to make any cor- rections or additions on. Go to it! It's all yours! Put your favorite sport here. The cover is silly you think. change it. 126 Put a missing teacher here, Put your picture, which we left out, in. Put your pic. with the award you deserved. A favorite campus scene. There. Feel better? Now it's really YOUR annual! 127 POETRY 128 ME, MYSELF, I'M LIKE THE SEASONS Sweet smelling, fresh, warm and nice. When spring rolls around, this is what I'm like. When summer comes in, what will I be like? Sporty. relaxed, full of fun, That's me. Ilm no longer fresh or brand new. Ilm ready for changes That will be coming through. Winter is me sometimes Cold at heart. When spring comes around Iill have a Change of heart. Alfreda Myers Workshop One of the purposes of a school is to develop and stimu- late talents which the student already possesses. The English Department contributes to this goal by sponsoring the annual Poetry Workshop. Promising students are drawn from their regular classes for a short period to meet and work with a local poet. In the workshop students discuss poetry. its purpose, and their own ideas. They then write their own poems and submit them to critique. The work shop is completed and students then publish and read some of their works to their regular English classes. The following are but a few samples of what Withrow students have to offer. WHEN YOU WERE BORN, MY SON I think of the pain I gave to birth you, boy, For you to grow up and your whole life destroy. When you were born, I thought you were one of the great, But that just shows you the ways of fate. You were laying in alleys. a street bum in the night. All you did was lie, cheat, steal and fight. How much can one, lonely parent take? When their child turns out to be a liar and a fake? Why did my child turn out so wrong? And why is my love him so strong? I guess when its over, my tears will cease to come, Because you are dying, my well beloved son Marie Watson 129 82 YEAR OLD FANNY She was a beautiful woman When she was young. She was full of vigor, Not very much like the . Girls that were reapected In those days. She was a beautiful woman When she was old Spunky and sassy Drinking beer and Watching the Reds. Always putting away Soft and gentle feeiings, Until they were needed. Wasn't I the lucky one to have needed them? Vicky Kreiger WHEN I WAS YOUNG When I was young I was told Do what you want to do And be what you want to be. I want to be a Doctor And I tell them that. But we cath afford that, They say to me. You have to compensate. Be something we can afford, So do what you want to do And be what you want to be. Kim Wynn 130 UNTOUCHABLE Across the stage she drifted. Her mind apart from her soul. Her heart belonged to the curtain puller, And he never noticed her. She, the star of every ShOW, Had yet the day to come When she could say she truly loved. For she barely spoke a word. Those who attended the Performance were entertained by superstars like Georgia Hearn, the Queen of Gospel at Withrow, Andre Perdue, who makes dancing look easy, and Joel Davis, pianist supreme. As in years past. dancing, singing and comedy were fea- tured. Mr. Parks band, Mr. Conway's Choir, the ponies, skit members and faculty provided entertainment for all. Star Wars provided a theme for the occasion. The audito- rium was decorated with rockets and planets while music from Star Wars and Star Trek was featured in the show. For the second year in a row, rehearsals for Sounds were interrupted by poor weather and, therefore poor attenr dance. Tiger spirit showed through, however, and the show went on on schedule. Sounds has become an integral part of Withrowe spring activities. Sounds 79 is waiting in the wings. Priscilla Thornton leads the Chair 198 Jeff Walters-Emcee Andre Purdue adds his own slylc. Now in it's thirteenth year, Sounds is the largest event at Withrow. People-wise, there are about 300 people involved in it. The Executive Staff is composed of Mr. Parks, Mr. Conway and Mr. Gallagher. They are in charge of the over- all production. Sounds. however. is too big for three men to handle. Without the help of many others, the program would not exist. Many thanks must be given to those who help out with choreography, skits, costumes, makeup, tick- ets, and the many other tasks which make Sounds a success. Skits Mr. Weis Mrs, Stefanik Chorography . Without the work and effort of the above, as well as coop- x eration from the administration, faculty and students. Sounds would be impossible. '.,. xix - Would you want this group for your Mates ? 201 . gs? , mgg 202 The Homecoming Parade this year, was themed around passage of a tax levy for Cincinnati Schools. Participants tried to emphasize the value of Withrow to the community. As in previous years. the parade route ran the length of Erie Avenue from Peoples Junior High to Withrow. Child Care won the float decorating contest over other beautiful competitors. This years King and Queen were the lovely Darlene Adams and popular senior, Mike Iarman. Unfoi'tunately, the Western Hills Mustangs defeated the Tigers in the football game. Fans were entertained at half time by both bands and the drill team. After the game, the Pep Club sponsored a Homecoming Dance in the cafeteria. Attendance was not overwhelming, but was better than the past few years. The Tiger Homecoming went well this year. Black Rose Express provided the entertainment for the event which will live long in the seniors memories. 209 210 212 213 Graduation. The culmination of twelve years of work. The end. The beginning. Itls the start of a career for many and a step in the education of others. In any event, it is an occasion worthy of celebration. At With- row, thatis precisely what they did. Graduation exercises took place on May 28, 1978 in the stadium. Over 600 students took part in the cere- mony. The graduates processed from the tower to the stadium, led by Mr. D'AmlCO, administrators and coun- selors. The invocation was given by the Reverend LC. Brooks. This years ceremony differed in that Andre Perdue, Senior Class president received one diploma in the name of his fellow graduates. Needless to say, this speeded up the affair considerably. At first, many seniors had felt somewhat cheated by not having their names called individually, but all seemed happy with the end result. Names were called as the graduates filed into the stadium as a compromise. This year exercises were marked by warm and pleasant weather in contrast to the rain of the previous years. The class of 1978 certainly deserved it. Involved and energetic, the class of 78 had added it's own uTouch of Class t0 Withrow. The leadership of stu- dents like Andre Perdue, James Neidhart, and Craig Hultquist will be missed. The sports achievements of Dwight Porter, Mike Jarman. Mike Henderlight and Ken Hammonds will be hard to match. Many other stu- l dents contributed to the advancement of Withrow in their time here and Withrow will miss them. Con- gratulations 78.
