Larry Lockhart John McIntosh The 1976-77 edition of the Withrow footbatl team ended the season with one of their better records in recent years, 6-4. The team played consistent ball all season with a few Hashes of brilliance. Their scoring output consisted mainly of the big play and turnovers, which were theirs on several occasions. The season got off to a fast start with an 183 thrashing of hapless Hamilton Garfield. They then preceded to lose to three formidable foes in Roger Bacon, Woodward, and Moeller, The coming weeks saw the Tigers surmount a remarkable five game winning streak. which included vic- tories over conference opponents Hughes, Aiken, Western Hills, Walnut Hills, and an explosive 40-19 win over Purcell. Overall, Coaches Rusche and Shestina did an excellent job, placing sec- ond in the P.H.S.L. Post season honors went to John McIntosh tMVPL Ioby Merten tOffensive Player Of the Yeart, and Greg Hill tDefensive Player of the Yean. x F x Wdiwgw A a . - . Fletcher 19 20 21 The coaches and players looked upon the 1976-77 season with high hopes and dreams. But those hopeful visions never quite materialized as their final record stood at 5-7-1. The predominantly senior squad could not get on track the first half of the season losing six of their first seven contests. The prob- lem seemed to lie in the area of the goalie where opponents scored at will. After a personel switch which bmught senior for- ward Randy Cody into the nets, the team preceeded to put to- gether a string of impressive victories. It began with back to back shutouts against Western Hills 11-01 and Mariemont 01-01, and ended with a second place finish in the Metropolitan league. wmwewwe Coach Ernest A. Wagner D. Helton R. Their many losses were due mainly to inex- perience in tournament competition and general inconsis- tency. Mr. Hlad has great expectations for next years team as the entire team returns. The 1976-77 basketball squad was not up to par with recent teams as their final record stood at 3-13, The record was not truly indicative of their play as seven of their losses were of the two point or less variety. Coach Ferone and his staff will be looking at next years team with high hopes as it returns several key players. Among them are 6-7 sophomore giant Lasalle Thompson, 5-8 Um Mike Iarmon and 6-3 Grj Denny hCombreaQ Hammonds. The season was not a total disap- pointment as it allowed the young team to scratch the surface of their potential. The tournament was rough going as usual for the tigers, losing in the first round to Elder. 27 ' i ' - 1 1.3-: Reserve Basketball , D Eleckstead A. Early V. Rawlings D. Porter MA Cox L. Sunday Baseball After getting off to a slow start, the baseball team rallied to have an outstanding campaign. They finished league play with a 10-3 mark, good enough for a first place tie. Senior co-captains Mike Ralston and Joby Marten enjoyed banner seasons, as did Billy Har- ris, Duane Shanks, Bobby Graves and George Slaughter. Coach Tom Chambers did his usual fine job on the field, both instructing and coaching. 33 34 1.. 36 Track Team 1. T. Haller 2. Asst. coach - D. Cole 3. M. Scott 4. K. Hammonds 5. M. Alexander 6. J. The teams success was clue mainly to an outstanding field of sprin- ters. Most valuable Strider, Ronnie Crawford, lead the way in the 100, 220, and 440. Tom Ross, Donald Tucker, and Arnold Homan also were among the city leaders. In the high jump Ken Hammonds set known school record of 616 . Due to his long hours of devotion, Coach Rusche was named coach of the year. 37 38 39 40 Tennis With a new coach, and many inexperienced players, the Tennis Team finished remarkably well with a 6-6 record. Your people have destroyed the land around here. And you haven't any place to go. The waters are poisoned. The land is dry. Flowers are scarce. Animals are lost; full of hunger. Where are the eagles to go? Missy Greenert 88 ME Well, I'm the hero in an old movie. I'm the security of a child's blanket and the warmth of a motherIs body, the sweetness of her milk and the pride in a fathefs joy. You see here before you the strength of a family and the determination of a stem Yet I am a loner a man whose virtues conflict with his ambition. I'm Napoleon during peace time, Julius Caesar in a democracy, a superhero with no foe. Who, me? I'm a dreamer. Michael Langford I KNOW YOUR ABSENCE You're gone I don't know where or why But I do know your absence The touch, your touch The way my body tingled When your hand moved slowly over me Your smile That wonderful radiant smile of yours That lit up your face as mine. Days we spent talking, laughing, Crying, comforting one another All gone Quarrels we had over silly things And oh how much fun we had making up Those walks we took hand in hand through the park The poems I wrote about you And you, pretending how much you liked them All gone Because You're gone I don't know where or why But I know your absence And it's felt EVERY MINUTE Freda McCray 89 90 OURS IS A TRUE FRIENDSHIP Seventy-four l A . the beginning of our Friendship Now it's seventy-seven For these three years that we've been so close, I prayed that we would never really have to say good-bye. Bob was at Withrow during the late forties and was involved with the music department and athletics. After graduation Bob went on to Georgetown College on a voice scholarship and later transferred to the University of Cincinnati. Bob succeed in obtaining his 8.5. degree in Physical Education, and his MA. in Administration and Supervision. Bob started his first teaching position in the small school system of Paintsville Kentucky during the early fifties. During these troubled years the Korean Conflict broke out and Bob served our country well. Bob later obtained a rank of Lt. Colonel in his years with the armed forces We will truly miss you Mr. Anderson and wish you all the best wishes and happiness that your Alma Mater can give. God speed, and make your days at West Hi as memorable as your days at Withrow. 113 114 A Message To Withrow I am your Alma Mater. I am your education, your activities, your success in life. Why then do you treat me with so little respect? Poor attendance at athletic events, the downfall of my newspaper, the lack of support of my yearbook from faculty, administration, and students. I am your hope, your expectations, your dreams, your good times, don't forget me! I hope and pray that you Will resurrect me to the position of greatness that I once had. It you choose to hesitate in my resurrection, you are the ones who lowered me to my grave. Sounds '77 did not disappoint those who attended. Brightly costumed dancers sparkled across the floor, againt Pretty girls executed their kicks with precision. The band, as usual, played with style while the choir performed with perfection. It could have been a Sounds show from any year except for the get down sounds of Stevie Wonderi There is a certain timelessness to an event like Sounds. It's created by the spirit of taiented young people working togetheri It's created by having skits pony lines, solos, dances etc. every year. It doesnit get old and routine how- ever, Each year, each class adds something new and unique to bring it up to date. Sounds. Withrow at its talented best.
