Seniors Linda Durbin and Richard Crutcher stapled Betsy Ross and Astronaut Shepard. Board Focuses on A fro-American H istory S tudies Students tested their knowledge of African geography. Studentst riots, inflation, Vietnam peace talks, the draft, Czechoslova- kia, the race to the moon, the election e teachers worked double time to answer their pupilst probing questions about these issues. History instruc- tors encouraged the new awareness growing among their classes. In an effort to keep abreast with the de- mands, the Board of Education decid- ed the senior high American history program needed revision. Teachers and student advisers, sacrificing their summer vacations, formed a commit- tee to work for an improved curricu- lum. When completed, it called for greater attention to current events and emphasis in achievements by minority groups in the country. 26

Sculpture, construction, weaving, and papier mache offered art students an opportunity to ex- press their ideas. Department head, Mr. Jack Mueller, stressed as broad and diversified a pro- gram as possible without the addition of new equipment. More three-dimensional projects appeared as the art department tried to create with old materials and find new ways to use them. Collages and abstract projects evolved from the 2 le and 5 period courses. Because the department had its largest enrollment to date,Mr.H1ad, a former English teacher, joined Mr. Wilson and Miss Hawes as a member 0fthe art staff. 28 Exp0-67 inspired Everett Campbell and Vrindy Renfrow s architecture projects. Model stage sets evolved from extra strands ofwire and cardboards.
