dents. Because of Dr. Condon's love for the East, Special bricks from Springfield, M assachusetts were shipped. Such a furor had arisen over the building of the tower that the plans were dropped from the blue- prints. Later, however, interested men backed the towers construction, and it soon rose over H yde Park and Oakley. Because of World War I the opening of the school was delayed one year. The gov- ernment wanted to use the main building as a hospital for soldiers, but the armistice was signedjust before the conversion of school to hospital had begun. In 1919 the school, nicknamed nEast High, opened its doors to its 1300 enrolu lees. The Hyde Park Business Club had donated a Rookwooa' fountain for the campus, but the school lacked many of the essentials inside. There were no electric lights, class bells, lockers, lab supplies or gymnasiums. The lunchroom opened to serve colds lunches, but students had to bring their own silverware. Buglers in the halls announced the end of classes. The stadium was incomplete and the athletic field unleveled. I At this time, school-spirited East High students selected the school colors, black and orange; and the mascot, a tiger. The first Annual was distributed in the spring 0f1920. The following year, Tower News presses began to roll, two swimming pools were built in the gyms, and the school re- ceived a large pipe organ from Richard K . LeBlond. Four years later, on May 19, 1924, the school board voted unanimously to name , the schoo'l for the retiring Dr. Withro w.
