WORDS We studied that the words are arbitrary symbols: they do not mean the things they stand forg they are simply noises that men give to the objects. None should believe this more than I, just now, when the attempt to get their meanings hurts my ears and troubles my mind. Words are the most melodious song if I know what you are talking about, they are terrible sounds when I misunderstand you. But I forget everything we read, everything you said. Words are now all my treasure and all my poverty. They are what I fear and what I light with. They are my weapons but they attack me. They carry all the love I have to give and bring me all the indifference my love meets sometimes. But ifthe words were not, how could the poet tell me about Hthe silent cat feet of the fog or Hthe green smell ofthe early morning ? Men gave me the ready language and said to me-communicate. So I took all my feelings, all my thoughts to discover what stands for this precious noise - friend. Written by Isabel de Castro Silveira, Exchange Student from Brazil.
