Long Live the King! Of English, King in many lands, with tongue of many turns, From Chauceris era till our own, each of his subjects learns. Heis Shakespeare, Hardy, Conrad, Burns; theyire ministers to him all, Whoire backed by legions, armed so well and ready at his call, Of teachers skilled in verse and prose, indeed his every trait, With books of stiff or paper backs, to help communicate. ENGLISH MAINTAINS HIS SOVEREIGNTY Although English remained much the same, its representation varied as many teachers questioned the traditional methods of teaching. Structural and functional relationships among lan- guages were shown inductively by means of linguisticse In literature, though new novels, such as John Knowlesa A Separate Peace, were read, many teachers at the advice of Xavieras Father Savage concentrated more on composition The Edgecliff Academy further enlightened students by present- ing classroom classics. Techniques both old and new vied for the best results. In transactions big or small English was a requisite for good business. Homework emphasized that obtaining skill in English, as in any language, required assiduous practice.
