HUDSON, JO ANNA: M.A.;Ohio State KOIZUMI, GAIL: B.A,, B.SeU. C. LOESCHER, CAROL: B.SeOhio State LONG, CAROL: A.B.e Gettysburg College; Cum Laude WITHROW, THE SCHOOL OF OPPORTUNITY, OPENS ITS DOORS TO SPECIAL EDUCATION FOR THOSE WITH VISUAL, HEARING, OR SPEECH HANDICAPS. MRS. MARIETTA MARTIN UBTMNED HER B.S. FROM OHIO STATE. The special education department was divided into three sections: for those hard of hearing; tor those visually handicapped; and for those with a speech defect. Mrs. Stevens, the head of the hearing department, has been one at the four teachers of the decnC at Withrow. Mr. Goldfarb was instrumental in developing a drivers' educau tion program for the deaf; and fairly recent was the switch from sign language to total use of lip reading in the ciasses. Closely associated to that section was the speech program, which was taken on a voluntary basis, Each case was different, both in type and degree. Mrs. Loescher, head at the department explained that this course aided stu- dents to speak better phaneticaliy, and helped to better adjust them for speech activities, such as public address. The third section was one for the blind, which was com- prised of four students. Mrs. Martin the only teacher of the blind at Withrow, was one at three in the city. The sessions, which averaged one and a half to two hours a week, were entirely individual. Yet, no matter what the section of special education, it was primarily the de- votions of these teachers that helped their students over- come the obstacles of their handicap. 28
