W xi 5 si W wi , ff' up xl. .X X nlN1i.Xsl s ' Q As the effect of science on the twentieth century makes itself more and more evident, so the lack of highly 'trained personnel comes into the view of the public. To do its part in combating this deficiency, Withrow began an accelerated course in mathematics two years ago. The object of this program is to finish the first year of college math while in the twelfth grade. The course has proved to be a highly successful enterprise. Whether an advanced course or business arithmetic, mathematics still offers a challenge. Teachers and coun- selors, alike, encourage qu-alified students to take higher mathe- matics. In this way we at Withrow may do our part to keep our nation supplied with technicians and scientists, so that it may main- tain its position as the greatest country the earth has ever known. BARB LEADS CLASS READING OF FRENCH, DURING A STIMULATING DISCUSSION. Languages Bring Foreign Lands Closer Latin, German, French, and Spanish comprise the list of foreign languages offered to the students at Withrow. Because of a rise of interests in foreign affairs, the eyes of the present generation turn toward a source in which they may find a better understanding of their neighbors. This source is a language course starting in the seventh and eighth grades. A student may take a two and a half period class in either'French, Latin, or Spanish. Upon reaching the ninth grade, the student takes a full five- period course in the selected language. Having had the previous exposure in the two early years, the pupil should find the tongue much easier and have a greater apprecia- tion of it. Through the untiring efforts of our more than able teaching staff, the valuable knowledge of a foreign language is made available to all those at Withrow. ROW 1 Davis, Shirley. Eager Students Study Science And Its Processes Not long ago the United States sent up its first satellite, The Explorer. A new outlook started in education in the fields of science. Withrow is ready to take her place in -this world in which there is a need for a great emphasis on sciences. She has courses in both the natural and social phases. Withrow, clearly showing her foresight into the un- known future, has supplied faster moving courses for those who excel in science, besides the regular courses for those who are less ambitious. Her teachers continue their research so as to meet the demand. Biology, botany, and physiology still rank as high as chemistry and physics, nevertheless. The rocket age has put emphasis on the sciences of experimentation, but a full and understanding knowledge of the world around is necessary today.
