THEN AND NOW' A trumpet pealed and tiny classes left bare, un-decorated rooms to go to others, never losing the smell of new wood. Passing through halls whose sides gaped with wounds just waiting to be healed by lockers, past racks where their wraps hung, down stairs resounding with the steps of the high-buttoned shoes of patrolling teachers went the pupils of 25 years ago. Beyond the big muddy hole that was to be- come the stadium of today stood the Hrst trembling trees of today's blooming orchard. Up in the lunchroom no appetizing scents reached the pupils as they sat at carpenter-horse tables to eat their packed lunches with silverware un- wrapped from napkins brought from home. Strange as it seems, this was the Withrow of 25 years ago-the framework of the teeming school of today. Ideas and clothes have changedg the map has too

First Row MR. SMITH- After a day of harmony classes and band, Smittie finds pleasure in his daugh- ter, Nancy. MISS SPELLMIRE- Teacher of general science, spends many pleasant hours in her garden, and delights in looking at the stars. MR. SROFE- Social studies teacher, who sponsors Philologia, Camera Club, and is chairman of the salvage committee, collects anecdotes of A m e ri c an presidents. MR. STEPHANY- Science teacher and anato- mist, has among other inter- ests a hobbv of mineralogy which dates back to childhood. Second Row MISS STRATE- Teaches world geography, astronomy, sociology and civ- ics and in the meantime en- joys bridge, and reading. MISS TAYLOR- Teacher of English and phvsi- ology, likes reading, cooking, the theater and dancing. MISS VANCE- Teacher of household arts enjoys collecting antiques and reading mystery thrillers. MISS VATTER- Supervising teacher of house- hold arts, enjoys lectures, movies and landscaping her yard. Third Row MRS. FLINT- Golf, tennis, and reading a good book fill up the spare moments of this Junior High gym teacher. Fourth Row MISS WOOD- Besides conducting her house- hold art classes, she enjoys water color painting, travel- ing, and good music. Fifth Row MISS SEARS- Junior High English teacher, enjoys vegetable and flower gardening, her island in Can- ada, and her pet cats. MISS WILLIAMS- When school duties as an English teacher are over for the day, a good play or movie occupy her spare time. MR. ZIEGLER- Teacher of practical math and commercial law, s p o n s o r s Law Club, the school bank and the sale of war bonds. MISS SMITH- Junior High home economics teacher, revels in her collec- tion of bells and information about each. MR. WILSON- Math teacher, spent many happy hours in pre-war days traveling along deserted roads. MISS STOSE- Who teaches art in the Junior High, designs manv of our program covers and football posters. MRS. LINDE- Sponsors Withrow Players, Tower News, Quill and Scroll, Modern Mummers, and Club Dramatics-busy woman, eh ? MRS CII LMAN, MISS STOEHR, MISS K. PERIN, MISS WAGNER, MISS KRAl'I', MISS K. WALKER 23 MR. WIRTH- Gym instructor and swim- ming team c 0 a c h favors canoeing, fishing and gasoline. MISS WALKER- Junior High social studies teacher admits that bicycling, cooking, fishing and farming employ most of her time af- ter school hours. MR. CARLSON- In Memoriam-Expert wood- worker, generous friend.
