HESE are our teachers- individuals who influence our lives greatly. They scold, slave, and shed tears to get the best out of us, and en- ioy their work even as they exhaust themselves. Now these people are not only teaching, but working beside us to help win this war. They know that everyone must contribute his bit, they are giving themselves, their time, and their money. Among the war activities of our teachers, Miss Atkins has presented herself as a blood donor, Mr. Wilson has spent much of his free time plowing fields, Mrs. Hutch- inson has been carefully tending her victory garden, and Mr. Carlson has been working in the machine shop where he teaches boys to run machines such as they will operate in defense factories. WALTER PEOPLES, Principal The buildings at Withrow, begun in 1915, are a reminder of World War 1. In fact, the newly constructed build- ings were about to be commandeered by the government for use as a hos- pital when the war suddenly ended. The school was opened in 1919 while the effects of the conflict were fresh in the minds of Americans. Not quite twenty-five years later, Withrcw again is face to face with an even greater war tragedy. Since 1919, the boys and girls of the Withrow family have had full enioy- ment of the American Way of Life. Withrow believes that our freedoms are worth preserving, We are proud of the roster of boys and girls that shows Democracy can depend on Withrow. Walter Peoples ompelence and friencflineu tgpi 9 our o ice Ataff. A glance into the office reveals an efficient staff graciously re- ceiving visitors, publishing the daily bulletin, keeping records of every student, conferring with pupils and performing num- erous other detailed tasks necessary for the smooth operation of the largest high school in the city. Not infrequently the familiar words, That will be two nights' detention, resound above the din of typewriters. Besides carrying out regular rou- tine, the office has this year taken on the added duties of ad- ministering a school that has gone all-out in the war effort.
