Pass the biscuits, Mirandy! From a bed of downy feathers protrudes a blistered foot, there to bask in the first rays of an early sun. Groans of, Owl and moans of, My back! mingle harmoniously with the mooing of a cow and the cackling of a hen. The day has begun. A man accustomed to the late rising hour of seven a. m. crawls from his place of repose at the unheard-of hour of four-thirty a. m. He attempts a stretch. Funny, reaching to the top of a blackboard never produced the same disastrous results as reaching to the top of a ha mow. Frdlm a breakfast happily unrationed, he limps into that royal domain of pecking fowl, the backyard. Among the assorted farm buildings, he finally finds the right building. Dragging his weighted weapons Lhoes, scythe, etc.t along, he reflects on the lightness, the desirability of pure white chalk and dusty erasers. Should auld acquaintance be forgotff' he chants, as he toils. The broiling sun recalls the coolness of a classroom. The rows of straight furrows i PIant seeds six inches apart. l bring to him the memory of simple trigonometry problems. What were chemical formulas compared to how much of what to give each barnyard inhabitant? At last the day of reward! Tractors aside!! Picks and hoes subtley hidden! Appetites revealed and in a big way! Yes, it's the festal Thrasher's Day Dinner and King of the Feast is-you guessed it-the schoolteacher turned farmer. Feet no longer blist- ered, back no longer stiff, the farmer glows with something that is more than sunburn. lt is a justified glow of pride, for he-or she-is numbered among those agrarian members of our faculty who devoted their summer months to the work of planting victory that it might later yield a bountiful harvest. lt was one long, hard pull but look at the excellent results! Twelve tens of scrap metal and rubber collected by hard-work- ing junior high students! Forty tons of newspapers, magazines, boxes, and other paper trundled to schcol in home-made wagons or carried by faithful pupils! Through the response from these drives the junior high shows its truly patriotic American spirit. The champion of this paper drive, Stanley llhardt, deserves showers of praise and gratitude for his cooperation and effort. In a wagon of his own manu- facture, this energetic young patriot hauled to school more than a ton of newspapers and magazines. if ,, -ts -C 'IX ufiilzrow lzefpecl uncfe am reap the lzarueal of grain and Jcray
