Juniors! Theirs is an enviable positionenot too old to be blase about school events nor too sage to find the less sophisticated underclassmen utterly congenial ; still they have attained a new dignity and an impressive knowledge of circus fundamentals Which make their opinions respected by even those demi-gods, the seniors. In this year students iind themselves an essential part of Withrow and experience a faint sense of nostalgia at the thought that someday this great organ- ization Will be existing smoothly without them. They sense a. quick thrill in looking forward to the coming gay cycle of spanglelandh activities, their last; a sudden tautness as the curtain rises on one of our first nights, an exhiliration in screaming with a kaleidoscopic crowd as another touchdown or homerun is scored for Withrow. Indeedelessed are the juniors for they shall inherit the school. 64 Home Room 308 Firsf Row-M. Conti, J. Doolan, J. Dugan. J. Cox. D. Egbert, R. Cramelx Semnd RowLAA Crawley, B. Critten- don. R. Never before in their school lives have they encount- ered a human machine so huge, so cooperative. Never before have they made so many foolish blunders. Nevertheless, here among their ranks are the stars of tomorrow. The sophomores, their Whole attitudes barking out self-assurance, have lost their hesitancy of freshmen days. They now regard themselves as veteran performers. Having accustomed themselves to circus life, this merry-go-round of work and fun, they begin to shine forth individually. 74 Home Room 201 First Rau- R. English, E. Ersig, R. Ellig, J. Dieterly, B. The sun was out-it had been out for days The sky was clear and blueait had been clear and blue for days. Yet, somehow, I knew that that day was the real be- ginning 0f Springenot just an ordinary day. wandered around trying to find why I should feel that wayeall of a. sudden I knew. Right there in front of me was the Bailum and Barney Circus, Naturally, I went in. Imagine my amazement to learn that most of those employed in the circus were of my old beloved Class of 1938 from Withrow. At the gate, in the ticket office, were Angela Brief: and Janet Fabiano. Frank Sisson, the manager, came up as I was buying my ticket and told me that Ann and Janet were put there to sell tickets because the male customers could buy either from blonde tif gentlemen prefer blondesl 01' from a brunette lif they didn'tl. Knowing that I would like to visit behind the scenes, Frank called Bob Cary to be my guide and back we went to watch the pieparations for the show. Attraeted by hearing a rather familiar, liQuiet on the set, I hurried over to a small group. In the center was Van Mutiny, yelling his theme song and then giving David Jarrett, Don Judd, and Her- old Buxton a snappy pep talk before they went on in their role of clowns, Seeing a rumpus among the elephants, I went over and found Frank. Watkins in his glory in blue overalls, pitching bay to the animals. Then, sudden- ly, I heard someone call out four or live numbers andeboom! An elephant landed on his side. I must say I was astonished and so investigated a bit. There I found Walt Maerki calling signals so that Johnny Thmntm could tackle the elephants. Just then, Betty Hick, the page girl, announced that the show would start in a minute. Instantly, Frances Prockter stepped in front of the lion cage and made faces She does this each time to scare them so they will be roaring when Bob Shimt steps in to tame themi Next we stopped at the sideshows. It was the ballyhooing of Bob Kmnz that led me on the Wild Men of Borneo and just when theyid be wildest and seem about to burst from their cage, Ruth Wilker- son, would come out, smile and pat them on the head, and they would really calm down. Music attracted me to the next booth, There was Mabel Fisher with her hair all slicked back, sway- ing to the music for she was the Hula dancer. Marge Feimen as the Snake Charmer was her neighbor. I suppose no one really believes in a two-headed woman. but there one was. It was easy for me to see that the heads which stuck out of one large dress were those of Ruth and Roberta Shidel. One head watched the stand next door which was really bewildering. In the right corner was Natalie Bassett as Giggling Gertie, and in the left, Jane Kattenhoo'n as Snickering Susie. Both girls were really living up to their names. Sitting on the floor in front was Tillie Winder expertly proving that her title HThe Girl Who Can Talk Faster Than Anyone was absolutely true. It was now time to watch the show. The most outstanding part was the display of horses. Billie Snyder was the Riding Mistress and she taught the animals to bow and dance. My curiosity was aroused by a girl who was sit- ting in the ring facing the audience, and every now and then, writing something down. At last I rec- ognized the girl as Beverly Ewald. My guide, Bob, PROPHECY OF 1938 explained that she made a hobby of writing poems about the freaks she saw in the audience. As I turned from this tent, a paper was thrust in front of me. A little boy asked me to buy his per- sonally written and edited scandal sheet: leuys and Gals and What Theylre D0ing.'y I was thrilled and delighted to see that many of my former class- mates were mentioned. I was glad to read that Harold Conlon has just realized his life-long ambition to become president of the Society for the Prevention of Tuesdays Al- livaysl coming after Monday, Congratulations, Stage- 001'. The Misses Betty Jean Shafer and Marge Owen are now operating an exclusive institution of learn- ing in Cincinnati, the Select Seminary for Young: Ladies. Turning to the, theater gossip column, I saw that Henry tTyrmre Powerl Woodard has at last been given a role after twelve years of stark failure and disillusion. He will play the part of a hobo in a mob scene. What if he does have to stand behind a pole? Rome wasn't built in a day either, eh Henry? Having a good memory, I was surprised to find that Jack. Ciaccio has become a great Shakespearean actor, and is being currently starred at the Cox in the immortal tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. I wonder who his Juliet is now? That famous prima donna, Patty Ream lives alone in her thirty room house with a cat, a dog, a parrot, and two lovely alligators. I wasnt surprised to read that that veteran make- up artist from the Withrow Minstrels, Virginia Remke, has turned professional. Ginnyis slogan seems to be Kiss and make up! The radio has also claimed some Withrow people. Stella, Piccst may be heard over a national hook-up as Kellog'gls Singing Lady. Stella charms her youth- ful listeners with fairy tales and songs. The kiddies just love her program. Marty Roberts may be heard in the early morning giving explicit directions on HHow Not to Bake a Cake! We wonder if Mart is happily married. Another Minstrel veteran, Chuck dc Voss has really climbed the ladder of success. Chuck has that very important job as Grand Master of the Trump- eters for Haile Selassie. We knew he could do it! Turning from theater to court gossip, I happily read that Marcia Doyle is making good use of her gift of gab as lawyer for poor, mistreated wives in the Judge Gordon Lovettis Court of Domestic Re- lations. The judge having once been the itGreat Lover himself is inclined to be very lenient with the unhappy wives. Attorney Doyle, however, re- fuses to let him be swayed by tears and sighs. An interesting column entitled uProfessions of Popular Peepleil next caught my eye. Former With- row students seemed to be everywhere. As an eminent brain surgeon, Charley Hartman has opened his office in New York City. His friend from high school days, Howard Burger has his ultra modern undertaking establishment next door. ' The two, as in former days are cooperating nicely. I was astonished to read that Jeanette Muhfm and Roberta Dmclton are now in distant India. That a 'tSpecial Homemaking course at Withrow certainly proved a big help to those two girls. They very capably fulfill the strenuous task as dressmakers for that ancient maneMahatma Ghandil Betty Crumb has deserted her native America for gay Paree, Betty has turned her French Chateau into a boarding house for homesick foreigners. A copy will be sent free up- on request. No obligation. Please state if in- terested in Day or Night School. MILLER SCHOOL of BUSINESS CLASS PROPHECY Back again to Cincinnati, I see that Ted 2:: Hagan has his hands full as the dentist on Monkey's Island at the Zoo. His nurse, Marge Barber, rather complicates things, however. because she insists on teaching the little monkeys to truck. Happy swingint, Marge! ' I understand that those two red-headed anets, Silverglade and Norton, considered their jobs as window-washers in the Carew Tower just a ttpane in the neckeif you get what I mean! It pleases me to see that those two serious Seniors from the Class of i38-M'ickey Martin and Otto Zugelter have used their wits quite well toward finding a place of honor in this old world. Mickey spends her time putting the holes into doughnuts, while Zugie puts that cute little twist into pretzels! My, myeto think that they once went to Withrow! Here,s something novel: Thatetrio, Harry Arn- old, Ben Middleman, and Eric Nielson are now en- gaged in the business of developing mock turtles for racing purposes. The boys are quite satisfied with their occupation although things are coming along pretty slowly at the present. Leaving the professional column for the heart throb section, I Was amazed to see that Jane DeRoo was editor of the article Advice to Lonely Hearts and Lovelorn Folks. Her two most interested read- ers are Bob Coleman and his cute little Missus the former Jcme Hollmeyer. Bob and Janie have their ups and downsebut they believe that tttrue love never runs smoothlyW The good old gossip column next interested me. Remember sweet, little J1me Mehne? Well she has done quite well for herself. She is now the utterly charming wife of Public Enemy No. 1. Good for you June, we didrft know that you had it in you.
