For many, this desire finds an outlet in the field of music. These study it, mastering its technigue, until they are able to produce music that not only brings joy to them- selves but strikes a responsive chord in others. Closely allied to music-rhythm and grace being the key to itls beauty-is that delightful art of movement, the dance. For others keen enjoyment is found in writing. ln the school publications these are given opportuni- ties to study the principles of effective composition and in some instances, at least, they are able to experience the joy of seeing the creatures of their minds take tangible shape in words. Photography is an ever Widening field. lt is an art involving principles of composition and design, even as painting and sculpture. The youth with his kodak can experiment with light and shade, and reveal beauty in the commonplace. Still others have found their medium of expression on the stage. Certainly all of us have enjoyed the fruits of their efforts. Labor, trials, defeats, backaches and ecstasies- all are familiar to aspiring artists. 98 , zjwv. ,xr vb 4 I t Q W Q1 . 213' fi ,av 1 I wg, Q v . '-fum mf, 'v'..,, Q'-liff' W ,. .. .. .a. I To T H E Y CD U T H QF WTTHRQW HIGH SCHOCDL, it may be a shy glance from a beautiful face, a grid- iron hero clutching a slippery pigslqin, or the breathless pause at the peak of a pole Vault. It may be the surge of the home-going crowd boarding the street car, the absorption ot inten- sive study in the library, or a tense moment experienced while on the stage ot a dimly lighted auditorium. Time, to them, is youth-laughter-thrills -serious thought. MINSTRELS The spot catches beautiful ladies as end men frelic, stage hands toil, and the irio goes into a hurried rehearsal hack stage. vu CORNETS: Pierson De Jager, Ed- ward Searight, Laird Marsh, Rich- ard Fisher, Warren Guard, Russell Alsfelder, Roy Coleman, Paul Crocker, Carl Trurnan, Richard Pay- lor, Chester Dones, Clifford Frank lin, Bill Huis, Nowell Stevens. THE VVITHROW BAND The Withrow Band of l935 has now completed its seventh year under the direction of Mr, George Smith. Through Smittie's jolly personality, hard work, and faculty for inspiring cooperation, this organization has become one of the best high school bands in the city. MINSTREL What the footlights reveal and what goes on behind scenes at the minstrel show make a study in con- trast. The beautiful costumes, the modern music, and smooth running performance which the audience knows, are only the result of endless rehearsals and tireless activity back stage. lnstruments must be tuned, costumes pressed, girls made up, and boys blackened before the curtain can be drawn. Final instructions, the lights are dimmed, the curtain drawn, the show begins! Hurried change of costumes, re-touching of make-up, last minute rehearsing of routing, interrupted by the cry of the call boy, con- tinue long after the show has started. From the wings, each performer takes the stage, entering with a reassuring word in his ear, and a pat on his backg returning to friends waiting with congratulations. Four nights of this, and Withrow crashes through with another stupendous production, and four packed houses to its credit. Hats off to the l935 Minstrel Show. lO7 l ln sweet music is such art Killing care and grief of heart Fall asleep or hearing, die. EUTERPEAN BACK RCW, Slanding-E. M. McClure, D. Corey, N. Myers, J. The task has not proved an easy one. However, Annual staff meetings have not involved merely hard work. The members of the staff have spent many enjoyable hours together criticising write-ups, struggling with layouts and discussing classmates and school activi- ties. We feel that although the Annual is an important result of these frequent meetings, it is not the only one. Through our worl: to- gether we have made new friends and gained valuable new experiences. To the business staff is due the credit for the financial success of our Annual, while to the art and literary staffs, goes the credit for capturing the atmosphere of Withrowg for making permanent these swiftly passing moments. The language clubs add to our knowledge and appreciation of languages. Such inter- esting things as small plays, marionette shows, talks, and excursions are at the same time a great deal of fun and an excellent means of helping us to speak many foreign languages more fluently. 76 .-r--Q, , 2 LITERATAS FTRST ROW-E. Their monthly programs consist ot plays, talks, games, and other amuse- ments that vary, the school routine. WITHROW RIDING CLUB Thrills and spills, jumps and bumps, horseseand more horses! Every season is thoroughly enjoyed by the Withrow riders. The spicy air of fall, made more pungent by the odor ot steak sizzling over a wood's tire, leads to peppy oavorting horses, winter brings only the hardy tew to clamber on stamping, blowing steeds for a brisk Canter, but with spring, comes careful preparation forthe Horse Show where those who worked at their pleasure go proudly home with awards.
