simple melody-that's how it started. Back in those good old days when we gg were young we whistled or sang our favorite tunes-disregarding key or tempo. There was just something about music which pleased us. Many have gone along appreciating only those rhythmic bits of song which happened to catch their fancy, others went to sym- phonies where such artists as Rachmaninoff and Kreisler thrilled them into the realization that here was another world. A strange new feeling was born in them: they wanted to create music themselves. At Withrow, these joined musical organizations and began to learn the value of tone, execution, and the strict rhythm needed to produce even the simplest melody. The majority did not aspire to create, we were con- tent to listen. We did not recognize keys and modes, all we felt was a rhythmic pulsation in our veins, a purging of our minds and hearts. How happy we are in knowing that though we cannot speak the one inter- national language, we can understand it anywhere.
