A lamentable outgrowth of the system of interscholastic games is that, because of the too keen competition, only a small handful of students get to play on the varsity teams. Since the real benefit from athletics comes not to the spec- tator, but to the player, there has been devised a system of l intramural athletics, by which each student takes an active part on one or more of the class teams. Competition is much in evidence, but it is not of a vicious kind. Many promising players have been dis- covered in this Way for the varsity. At any rate, Whether one is a star or not he reaches the golden benefits of athletics. At Withrow, we have a well balanced and carefully conducted program of intraf mural games. Boys have home-room teams for volleyball, baseball and basket- ball, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors each play a regular schedule, Winners of the freshmen and sophomore tournaments play each other for their respective championships, and the junior victors meet the senior champs for top honors in their group. Girls, too, have their share of this delightful innovation. Their hockey, volley- ball, baseball and basketball teams are ever eager for the signal to start play , and how they do go at it. Some of them might show the boys a thing or two about any of the several sports. lnterest in these games runs high, and, while the play is, as a whole, not as brilliant as varsity style, the boys and girls give their utmost. As a result, the contests never have a dull moment. This sort of thing will build better equipped. healthier and happier citizens for the United States of tomorrow. ll2

STATE CHAMPIONS FOR I934--- HE distinction of being the only amateur baseball player to hit a ball over the left field wall at Crosley Field goes to Marshall Casey Chand- ler, Captain of our baseball sguad. Pitching steadily and well, Don Corken may well be said to be the mainstay of our pitching staff. Efficient work behind the bat and at the bat marked the play of these two backstops, Irvin Rubin and lohn Grossnickle. Rick Campbell, Wilce Carnes, and Eldon Cunningham ably held down the infield positions. Paul lones, hard hitting first baseman goes up after a high one while Milton Conver and Ray Apperius his rivals for the position look on. These four boys supplied the hurling for our team this year. Don Corken, Harry Bohrer, Bill Bischoff, Francis Constiner. Gordon Corken, diminutive but slugging left fielder, Lawrence Pape, utility man, and Lee Zeller, substitute infielder, all helped the sguad to gain the Southwestern Ohio Championship. . f 5 -0WlHo '?
