CRAWL SIDESTROKE CR the first time since l927, swim- ming at Withrow came into its own this year. Coach Ray Wirth began instructing the team, which was V practically the same as last year's, soon after school began, and got results. Flfter the first few dual meets, it was easily seen that the swimmers had a good chance of receiving black letters and orange sweaters, symbols of champion teams. Ht the end of the season, having won two out of two of the Public High School meets and all but one of the Y. M. C. A. meets they found them- selves champions of these two leagues. This luck did not hold against outsiders, though, for the team placed only third in the district meet and lower in the state meet. Captain Dick Fletcher, star breast and back- strolcer, has a string of records as testimony of his exceptional ability. The Constiner brothers, Douglas and Francis, be- tween them did efficient swimming in the 220, lOO, and 50 yard free-style races, and free-style relays- Warren Wurster, speedy free-styler, and Lloyd Thomas, flashy diver, by their stellar performing helped the team win the city championship.

A lamentable outgrowth of the system of interscholastic games is that, because of the too keen competition, only a small handful of students get to play on the varsity teams. Since the real benefit from athletics comes not to the spec- tator, but to the player, there has been devised a system of l intramural athletics, by which each student takes an active part on one or more of the class teams. Competition is much in evidence, but it is not of a vicious kind. Many promising players have been dis- covered in this Way for the varsity. At any rate, Whether one is a star or not he reaches the golden benefits of athletics. At Withrow, we have a well balanced and carefully conducted program of intraf mural games. Boys have home-room teams for volleyball, baseball and basket- ball, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors each play a regular schedule, Winners of the freshmen and sophomore tournaments play each other for their respective championships, and the junior victors meet the senior champs for top honors in their group. Girls, too, have their share of this delightful innovation. Their hockey, volley- ball, baseball and basketball teams are ever eager for the signal to start play , and how they do go at it. Some of them might show the boys a thing or two about any of the several sports. lnterest in these games runs high, and, while the play is, as a whole, not as brilliant as varsity style, the boys and girls give their utmost. As a result, the contests never have a dull moment. This sort of thing will build better equipped. healthier and happier citizens for the United States of tomorrow. ll2
