Back in those good old days when we gg were young we whistled or sang our favorite tunes-disregarding key or tempo. There was just something about music which pleased us. Many have gone along appreciating only those rhythmic bits of song which happened to catch their fancy, others went to sym- phonies where such artists as Rachmaninoff and Kreisler thrilled them into the realization that here was another world. A strange new feeling was born in them: they wanted to create music themselves. At Withrow, these joined musical organizations and began to learn the value of tone, execution, and the strict rhythm needed to produce even the simplest melody. The majority did not aspire to create, we were con- tent to listen. We did not recognize keys and modes, all we felt was a rhythmic pulsation in our veins, a purging of our minds and hearts. How happy we are in knowing that though we cannot speak the one inter- national language, we can understand it anywhere. LABOR . . . PATIENCE . . . The Qrchestra, Band, and Presentation Orchestra are justly proud of the musicians they have developed. ln the Grlee Clubs and Special Chorus, the members enjoy training in group singing. The memory of a thrilling football game would be in- complete it We could not picture the stirring band, urging the boys on to victory. Besides playing at the games and in pep assemblies, this organization, under Smittie's leadership, frequently enlivens auditorium sessions with its marching music. A high spot of the amateur musical season in Cincinnati is the Annual Concert, under the direction of Mr. Surdo. A chorus of four hundred voices and a combined orchestra of eighty pieces unite to make this program of classical and semi-classical music one of the finest high school performances in the country. Cne of the most popular events during the school year is the Minstrel Show. This spring four packed houses, a record crowd for a high school performance, rewarded Mr. Smith and members of the cast. By participating in these musical organizations many pupils have discovered in themselves unusual talent. ln a Post contest for young musicians, the following Withrow students won recognition: Wm. Kueffner, violinist, season symphony ticketsg Ell Dee Compton, tlutist, a silver medalg Margaret Compton, 'cellist, a bronze medalj Kenneth Nichols, bass, a silver medal, losephine Myers, violinist, a bronze medalg lohn Daniels, tenor, a gold medalp and Bill l-logue, tenor, a bronze medal. ,!:' .ii ' -f. iii - 1--.. 5' ' ' ' ..':.wi12'-. 1. gsaswsvraPawsrfzfzzf-FI?szPUrII:Wane5ohrrnhf:QS221nirnzdpazpzoznfepvyoozvpzppuzf-S , Z 5 Ackley Adams Ainsworth Angert Abenschon Bacon Bain Bauer Bellstedt Berry Bishop Brosene Camnitz Carpenter Chaeker Cook Cooper D'Andrea Day Dewire Dilling Dimetral Dreher Duermit Dunbar Durbin Earhart El lingwood Ervin Fantini Fehl Fluck Frieclrick Fry Fryman Fulkerth Funck Funck Green Green Grossman Groves Hamilton Hanover Harper Harris Hartley Hartley Hastie Hayes Hensgen Hicks Himes Hobbs Hofmann Horton Hummel Heflin lmhoh' Juvenile Kampe Kayser Keidel Kprcher Kirby Kizner SPECIAL CHORUS M. E l l L lOUCHDOWNl A slim white figure with arms upraised. Thundering clamor from the stands. The kicker nervously eyeing the goal posts. A sudden hush as the ball is passed. The thud of leather on leather ethe ball floating over in a high arc. Pandemonium breaking loose again. The gleam of lights on polished hardwood. Tense figures grouped in the center of the room. A whistle blast-the group breaking into motion. Flashing forms moving down the floor. The swish of leather through the hoopp-again the Whistle, bringing the figures to a standstill .... A perspiring player standing on a low mound in the center of the field, eyeing the man at the plate. A sudden galvanization to action-the ball thumping into the catcher's mitt. Again the ball hurtling in. This time the crack of a bat on horsehide and a White sphere Whistling to the outfield .... A row of crouching runners, knees bent and heads up. Runners to your marks! and leg muscles become taut. The sharp crack of the starter's gun and they're off! . . . These are the things We shall remember when We think of sports at Withrow. As years pass they will fade and blend into hazy recollections of good times, glorious victories and heart-breaking defeats, mem- ories pervaded by that sense of sportsmanship and fellowship which belongs to athletics at Withrow. If our boys win, We go home feeling on top of the World and proceed to play the game all over again in our sleep. This is well and good. Being out in the open air this way is good for us although we undoubtedly lose much by not taking an active part in the game. Those who sit snugly bundled up in heavy clothes hardly realize the hardships endured by the boys they have come to Watch, not only the hardships of the present game but also those endured during the long training grind. Modern football is not the crude game it used to beg it is a combination of brain and brawn and requires the utmost bodily fitness and mental alertness for any appreciable success. A light team using clever plays may easily overcome an orthodox team of brawny gridders. We have never been blessed with a particularly heavy combination, yet by careful training and playing heads-up ball, Withrow has remained at or near the top of the league almost since the school was built. 1 ya 'Q N -14: . 1 'mi ., -' 'V, , at i me is i, W , M5 2 i . 2 , r it M If V is' ' . Marshall Casey Chandler, Captain, by playing an excellent game at end and half back, proved himself worthy of the trust placed in him. Albert Foley, honorary captain, unfortunately injured early in the season, was not afforded a chance to show his ability. George Bowden played a steady game at tackle, and with one year's experience should go places next season. Tom Lutz made a good showing at end, even though is was his first year of high school competition. lohn Grossnickle, hard driving tackle, always held when the play came his way. Charles Metzger, at guarterback, showed himself to be a hard fighter. Norman Kusel, at center, is promising material for next year. Bill Shober played a snappy game at quarterback. Rupp. 107 ...,f ITH several able stars from last year and ' R some flashy ex-juniors, Coach Doc Reuter put a track team in the field which took first place in the indoor meet at the St. . Xavier Field House. After two weeks rest, the team again swung into action against Woodward and outpointed that team 98-35. Russ Covington, a newcomer at Withrow, turned in good time in the 880 run and held his own in a triple tie with Corken of Withrow and Rainey of Woodward for first in the high jump. Cn April 25 Norwood invaded our stronghold and went home defeated 95-87. ln this meet Walter McGowan re- peated his surprising success as a hurdler, while Dick Zeumer and Dick Shreve did well in the century heat. The next week Withrow sent sixteen boys to the unigue Ohio Weslyan Relays where they took third place. Con- sidering the fact that the winners had thirty-five and thirty boys, our team made a very good showing. Score: Toledo Scott 45, Devilbiss High 42,13 Withrow 20. To the surprise of all, Withrow went down to defeat in a three cornered meet with Covington and Western Hills. However the fact that we were without the services of Corken, Carothers, and Alcorn, and that McGowan was injured in the 220 yard hurdles may partially explain this. At the meet at Cxford, sponsored by Miami College, Withrow defeated the entire field. The Tigers gained a score of 581 Q, Norwood being second with 562 3. Withrow's mile relay team broke the meet record but was disqualified on a technicality. May 24, in the city meet, Withrow far outdistanced any other team. They swamped their opponents in almost every event amassing a total of 881j points. Their nearest rival, Western Hills, had 85543 points. The team has yet to show its skill at the Cincinnati Night Relays to be held at the University of Cincinnati stadium. Coach Ray Wirth began instructing the team, which was V practically the same as last year's, soon after school began, and got results. Flfter the first few dual meets, it was easily seen that the swimmers had a good chance of receiving black letters and orange sweaters, symbols of champion teams. Ht the end of the season, having won two out of two of the Public High School meets and all but one of the Y. M. C. A. meets they found them- selves champions of these two leagues. This luck did not hold against outsiders, though, for the team placed only third in the district meet and lower in the state meet. Captain Dick Fletcher, star breast and back- strolcer, has a string of records as testimony of his exceptional ability. The Constiner brothers, Douglas and Francis, be- tween them did efficient swimming in the 220, lOO, and 50 yard free-style races, and free-style relays- Warren Wurster, speedy free-styler, and Lloyd Thomas, flashy diver, by their stellar performing helped the team win the city championship. A lamentable outgrowth of the system of interscholastic games is that, because of the too keen competition, only a small handful of students get to play on the varsity teams. Since the real benefit from athletics comes not to the spec- tator, but to the player, there has been devised a system of l intramural athletics, by which each student takes an active part on one or more of the class teams. Competition is much in evidence, but it is not of a vicious kind. Many promising players have been dis- covered in this Way for the varsity. At any rate, Whether one is a star or not he reaches the golden benefits of athletics. At Withrow, we have a well balanced and carefully conducted program of intraf mural games. Boys have home-room teams for volleyball, baseball and basket- ball, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors each play a regular schedule, Winners of the freshmen and sophomore tournaments play each other for their respective championships, and the junior victors meet the senior champs for top honors in their group. Girls, too, have their share of this delightful innovation. Their hockey, volley- ball, baseball and basketball teams are ever eager for the signal to start play , and how they do go at it. Some of them might show the boys a thing or two about any of the several sports. lnterest in these games runs high, and, while the play is, as a whole, not as brilliant as varsity style, the boys and girls give their utmost. As a result, the contests never have a dull moment. This sort of thing will build better equipped. healthier and happier citizens for the United States of tomorrow. ll2 STATE CHAMPIONS FOR I934--- HE distinction of being the only amateur baseball player to hit a ball over the left field wall at Crosley Field goes to Marshall Casey Chand- ler, Captain of our baseball sguad. Pitching steadily and well, Don Corken may well be said to be the mainstay of our pitching staff. Efficient work behind the bat and at the bat marked the play of these two backstops, Irvin Rubin and lohn Grossnickle. Rick Campbell, Wilce Carnes, and Eldon Cunningham ably held down the infield positions. Paul lones, hard hitting first baseman goes up after a high one while Milton Conver and Ray Apperius his rivals for the position look on. These four boys supplied the hurling for our team this year. Don Corken, Harry Bohrer, Bill Bischoff, Francis Constiner. Gordon Corken, diminutive but slugging left fielder, Lawrence Pape, utility man, and Lee Zeller, substitute infielder, all helped the sguad to gain the Southwestern Ohio Championship. . f 5 -0WlHo '? Although this was not as well known as the other games, it was enthusiastically greeted at Withrow. The Volley- ball schedule this year included competition between group teams followed by games between the four class teams. Here they obtain a basic knowledge of the manipulation and care of tools and machinery. Since it would be im- possible in the short period of training available in the high school, to make of every student a master machinist, it is the aim of this work to impart to each pupil a practical knowledge of the equipment, vernacu- lar, and working of a truly modern machine shop. Such a foundation is intended to help the boy choose the occupation he wishes to follow when he leaves school. BELLS ES TELEPI-IGN a o AIL TO TI-IE CI-I 0 Mr. Peoples, because of his keen sense of humor, and kindly magnanimous nature has endeared himself to every student at Withrow. Towering above the ordinary indi- vidual, he seems at first, forbidding and stern, but this is only the exterior. Beneath, he has all the gentle human qualities that inspire confidence and respect. Our school is indeed fortunate to be under his administration. IEP THEY ARE DUR COUNSELLORS, OUR GUIDES O Most of us are acquainted with our genial Assistant Prin- cipal. Mr. Cadwallader knows what it means to be that most misunderstood person, a Ugosbetweenn. Yet, even with teachers and students alike suspecting him ot conspiracy in the others' behalf, he maintains his amiable disposition. 18 O Mr. Downer with his extraor- dinary understanding of chil- dren and likeable disposition, ably administers the affairs of Withrow lunior High School.
