To the majority of us, Purdie is a new figure. Une to he amazed at. questioned about. investigated. but ahove all. obeyed! How many of us knew that. when the 920 pulled into the Grand Central Depot on September 15, NIH. it hrought with it the future soeial seerelary to Mr. Lyon? A goodly numher of enthusiastic students journeyed down to welcome Purdie. All were extremely eurious to view the eanny Scotehman about whom they had heard so mueh. Their wait was not long. however, for Purdie was the lirst person oft' the train. As he alighted tearrying his own baggage. niueh to the chagrin of the portersl. he greeted them with a short hut. cheery Seoteh grin. Ah, the soot and dirt. he said. .l'is not like this i' honnie Seotland. I'd venture tae say that this is the meeting plaec for ai' the noise and grime i' the eityf' '0h, hut. we're going to have a new i6'1'1llilltl,l in Aprilf, replied a civic-minded Senior. It will he the tinest in the country, so when you return to your homeland. you will he ahle to go out from the new terminal. The skeptieal Purdie was wreathed in smiles when he learned of this, and a jovial and spritely COI1V0l'5i1-ii0ll about his honnie Seotland was Carried on all the way out to Withrow. Our personal eontaets with Purdie may he few and tar hetween, hut all of us have come into daily eontael with his age- old principle ---'FHRI FT! Some of us suspected it: others guessed itg many laughed at the idea. hut at last the seeret's out. Yesas-this is a thrift issue! Quite in line with our theme. we have chosen a personage who. in our minds. exemplifies the idea of lll1'ifi l,lll't,lll' Mae- Gregor. We sincerely hope you will like and enjoy reading ahout. Purdie as mueh as we have enjoyed writing ahout him. 0 WALTER PEQPLES whose kindly smile ancl friendly words will linger long in our memories of lYillll'OVV, the C lass of '33 declicates this Year Book. The rest of ye hae better get back tae yer classesf' After making his official tour of the school, Purdie immediately installed himself in his new oflice Ctop floor of the Towerl and set to Work. The most important problem at the time was the publishing of the 1983 Withrow Annual. VVhen Purclie had finished scanning several previously published ixllllllilli he broke forth with the aniazing declaration: i 5 HI dinna see the sense i' writing sae much an' saying sae little. As my good friend Queen Gertrude hae said. 'More matter wi' less costf Tha.t's what we'll hae to do. Say less about them and then there'll be less print. A-A i 17 OON after Purdie had been installed at 'Witl1row, hir. Lyon called an assembly for the classes that had not as yet met Purdie. The trim Scotchman was enthusi- astically received by the student body, and made a. brief speech. HI dinna want. tae waste words, he bluntly stated, 'wcause when one wastes words, he-wastes time a' time is money. I believe in saving money. The purpose 0, my speech is tae stress thrift in a' things at VVithrow. Now 1,111 not only talkin' tae t.l1e Juniors and Sophomores, but tae the Freshmen and Junior High School students as well. I want the Juniors to start saving their pennies now, sae that they can all buy Annuals i' 1934! These Freshmen and Sophomores who are sae extravagant wi' their paper must economize. The vera idea o' throwing away paper used only on one side! I want you tae save it. Send it up tae my office if ye canna use it. I'll use it tae post. my notices oi the bulletin boards. I'm not a-gonna. sae much more 'cause I don't. think the Junior High students should miss much o' their classes. Time is valuable, as I said before. Now do ye all understand what I mean by conservation? That's what I want you all tae be, C0lI.S'64I'1,'flf'i'l'f'J,, lYIr. Lyon was delighted with the success of PllI'Cll6lS plan and lost no time in con- gratulating Scotland's 'gpride and joy.', Purdie received this message with his modest smile. Owing to his admirable work, the 1932-33 iGQ,l-111 won the Public School CllHlllIJiOllSlllll of the city. Assailed by the fear of the possibility of too many footballs being lost, Purdie tied rubber strings onto all the balls. The job of being .6 merely assistant coach wasn't enough for the energetic Seotclnnan. so he tried out for halfback position. This appealed to him for a short time, but then he set. out to create a position whereby one could get everytliing backehe didngt like this half- way business. he grumbled. Economy in clothes was the next thing Purdie in- augurated. Substitutes going into a QZIVIIIC had to wear the same suits as the players going out. This slowed the game consider- ably but gave Purdie more time to think out a new Scotch pla.y that would net the team some yardage. ltlany a game was VVOII by this ingenious method of time out so tl1a.t Purdie could think up a new one. 49 BOYS' ATHLETICS WITH THE RETURN of twelve lettermen at the opening practice of the football season, Coach King's hopes were high for a championship team. In addition, many of the new recruits showed good material. In all, it was the most promising squad VVithrow had seen for quite a few years. The only drawback was the comparative lightness in weight of the squad. Coach King formed plays, however, which easily overcame this handicap. Closing a Whirlwind season wit.h eight victories and only one defeat, the Orange and Black gridders won a hard fought game with Hughes and clinched the city championship. WITH TIIE CLOSING of the football season, basketball practice began under the guidance of Coach Duning. Of the large number of boys who turned out, there were four veterans of the previous year upon whom the team could be built. They Were: Gerdsen, Kohler, Kreimer, and Taurman. Despite this fact, the Tigers fought through a hard season, tasting defeat more than victory. Considering the fact, however, that nearly every opposing tea.1n had the advantage of height, the Orange and Black squad made a fairly good record. The basketeers were fighters from beginning to end and did not lose a game without putting t.he best they had against the odds before them. liiuch good material was left with which a winning team can be built up next winter. A SOON AFTER SCHOOL STARTED, Coach Doc', Reuter began prospecting for runners for his cross-country team. In order to get the boys in shape, pract.ice runs were held be- tween the halves of the football games. Although not very successful in the cross- country meets last fall, the Withrow team did very well, considering the fact that most of its members were comparatively new. VVith the coming of winter, indoor track work startedg and, as soon as warm weather returned, Doc began organizing the regular track team. Quite a few members were lettermen of the year before. This year the team widened its scope of activities so that Withrow entered a man in nearly every track 50 and field event held. Exceptional skill in field events was shown by Bill Kent, who holds a number of records, including the southwestern Ohio district record for the pole vault. Last season the team won both city and district championships, and this spring the district championship was again taken by the Tigers. ALTHOUGH COMPOSED mostly of Junior boys without previous experience, the swimming team showed up quite Well during the past season. The all-time city record for the 100-yard breast stroke was broken by Fletcher of the senior team. After strenu- ous practice under Coach VVirth, the tank- men opened their schedule with three suc- cessive victories. From then on, the season was fairly successful, with the swimmers placing not less than fourth in all meets. Several swimmers on the senior team stood out as steady performers throughout the season. The showing of the Tiger natators in dual meets showed they were able to sink the strongest teams in the city when met alone. DESPITE ADVERSE NVEATHER CONDITIONS, which gave the baseball team very little outdoor practice, Coach King had his team well organized by the time of the first game. The first practice showed him that eight veterans had returned to form an excellent foundation for a squad. The battery was stronger than average, and thus enabled Coach King to pin most of his hopes on the pitching rather than hitting. From the lettermen he built up a formidable team which, up to the time the yearbook went to press, had only lost one game. It seemed certain that Withrow would have anot.her championship team this year. THE WITHROW TENNIS TEAM, under the supervision of Coach Duning, formed this spring, with three veterans and three new players. Although not as promising as in some other years, the team prepared to do its best to play a successful season and, at the time the ANNUAL went to press, still had its first game to play. 55 E BAND FIFTH Row, Irf! lo right: C. It has accomplished its main purpose, that of im- proving the health of the girls through the various activities. This organization opens the season by a hare and hound chase. Hockey, basketball, baseball, swimming, and color day follow consecutively. An Honor Night banquet closes the athletic season. At this time, the girls who were on champion teams are awarded chevrons, those who have received five hundred G. A. A. officers this year are: President, hlarcella Ackenhausen, vice-presi- dent, Denise Eickhoff, corresponding secre- tary, Edith Bittman, recording secretary, Pauline Easter, treasurer, Dorothy hleek. IIE IIOCKEY SEASON started off the girls' athletic year. After three exciting class games the championship was awarded to the seniors, and the juniors followed with a close second. For the first time in the history of VVithrow, the girls had a chance to compete with another school. A team selected from the honorary Varsities and All-Stars won from Hartwell. The entire hockey season was under the skillful management of Pauline Easter. Assisting her were the following class captains: Senior, Mildretl Lind: junior, Lorraine Hogan, sophomore, Edit.h Bittman, freshman, Elfrieda Hopff. I VER TVVO IIUNDRED GIRLS turned out for basketball practice and group games. After an exhibition game and one week of practice, the girls were divided into group teams. After these group games the different class teams were chosen. The class games resulted in another senior victory. The entire season was under the management of Helen Hutchison, assisted by the following class cap- tains: Senior, Alberta Heshong, junior, hlary hlargaret Rogers, sophomore, Helen Paffem- ritter, freshman, ltlarie Chestnut. N EXTENSIVE AND INTERESTING swimming program was carried out this year. The three meets, held in December, February, 56 and April, were VVOII by the Sophomores, and tlIe Freshmen came second. This suc- cessful season was due to the effects of the swimming Inanager, Doris Hexamer, assisted by the following class captains: Senior, ltflargaret Ringhand, juIIior, Alma Ziegler, sophomore, Clo O'Neal, freshman, Patricia Vockel. Seventeen girls received swimming letters and seventy-five points towards their SVP Four girls passed the senior life- saving, and fourteen passed junior life- saving. IIE INTERCLASS BASEBALL SERIES started this year during the last week of March. After a few weeks of pI'actice, the class games were played. The juniors were declared champions after six very well-played games, and the sophomores came second. The baseball season was under the efficient man- agement of Dorothy Bleek, assisted by the following class captains: Senior, hlildred Lind, junior, Lorraine Hogan, sophomore, Edith Bittman, freshman, AIIn VVhite. IIE 1933 COLOR D,'xY, the girls' animal track and field day, was held in the IYithrow Stadium on hlay 1. The two parts of the program were: The entrance of the classes, and the various field and track events. The seniors won first place in the stunt with the Pied Piper of Yvithrow. The school grounds were swarmed with green, blue, and red rats. The three lower classes failed to rid tlIe grounds of these rats. The Seniors succeeded, and were rewarded by the G. A. A. Board. INSTEAD or IIAVING four hurdles for speed, only three were used this year. Because this is so new, there are as yet. no national records. Lorraine Hogan fulfilled the re- quired time by ruIIning the hurdles in 7:4- seconds, thus establishing a national record. hloselle Gaston established a new running high-jump record for VVithrow with a jump of 4:72.-IQ, which equals second place in tlIe national record. Lorraine Hogan established anew hurl-ball throw record by throwing 9315 feet. In the final totaling of points, the juniors won first place with 69M points. Purdie thought it advisable that all the clubs should be merged into one large body. Pins, a very expensive and altogether unnecessary luxury, were to be dispensed withg and ribbons were to take their places. His first illuminating idea proved impractical, principally because of the inability of French students to converse l intelligently with scholars of German or Spanish and vice versa. Some of the lesser clubs were eliminated by Purdie, who deemed them a burden to tl1e nielnbers. His second suggestion fared better than the first. Fewer club pins were sold this year than ever be- fore. Ribbons proved a popular institution at. Wiitlirow, possibly because of their less costly initial expense. Purdie certainly has econoniized business affairs here at school, especially by slicing the price of the new 1933 ANNUAL. 59 KALI DASA VPPER GROVP. FIFTH Row. lift lo righf: ll. J. Strnlmlv. R. He was a inenlber of the casts of all our plays, not to mention the fact that he was the most important. man in the lllinstrel Show. Purdie distinguished himself with laurels in the Christmas play. He was on the other end of the telephone at all times during the performance, completing his task by closing the curtains at the finish. The final play of the year, Mr, Piln Passes By, once more delnonstrated Purdie's dramatic talent. In this presentation, he played a dual role. One was that of YQ-f'g.g Bl'f'lllL'l', who sent a lett.er by lllr. :Pllll to George Marsden. This role required a great a.1nount of artistic restraint on the part of the actor. Purdie's last participation in the big pres- entations of the year came when he took over the leadership of the choruses for the Annual Concert. llflr. Surdo was glad to be relieved of this duty when one so capable as Purdie was available for the job. The only thing wrong with the songs they sang was that he had the boys singing girls' parts, and girls singing boys, niusic. The harmony was 'cdelightfully refreshing and decidedly different. 75 l Anne .......... Carraway Pim .... Dinah . ......... Brian Strange .... Olivia Marden .... George Marden. . . ..
