W. ...QW ...,......-,mmm-.-...m.,.n..,....,... fy.,-,N .mmm-M-.W Yes, 'we're in the Army now,' was the cry of the joyous and stouthearted Twenty-Two as we entered our freshman year of train- ing at the Pilger High Academy. Before we follow the regiment through the long four-year trek up the ladder of learning, let's review the qualifications of this regiment christened, WThe Fight- ing Twenty-Two.' Marching back through the shades of the past, we pause at the year 1938. During this year two of our present ser- vicemen, Mardelle Hass and Shirley Psotta, began their training right here in the first grade of our Pilger Academy. Yes, we were entering our first eight years of preparatory schooling which was required before we could enter the Academy. Traveling up through the few years before our goal, the Pllger Academy, we gained force when we enlisted into our ranks four bashful recruits, namely Lyle Smidt, Allen Smidt, Ruth Ann McIntosh and Lois Phillips. Finally, the Twenty-Two was completed by the addition of the eighth-grade graduates from district schools, and we entered the academy as freshmen in l9l.6. During this freshman year the rollicking Twenty-Two suffered its first setback. Yes, we lost Marilyn Hogan, Allen Mulinix, and Merlin Larson which brought us to a slightly weakened but still the ambitious nineteen. Our ranks somewhat depleted, we accepted our private first class rating, bid bon-voyage to our acting sergeant, Gil Eckten- kamp, and shuffled into line for our sophomore year. Once more we met disaster, for during our sophomore year we lost Wallace Ensley and Norman Peterson. We were invited during this fortunate year to serve at the General and Captain banquet given by the juniors for the graduating seniors. Privates Daryl Kcopmann, Allen and Lyle Smidt, Shirley Psotta, Ruth Ann McIntosh and Marian Kehres represented our humble class as waiters and waitresses. We bid adieu to Captain Peterson and with our sergeant's rank safely in hand we looked upward to our junior year. Luck was against us, as we were again stricken at the loss of Sergeants Joyce and Joan Peterson, Robert Siebrandt and Donald Jones, reduc- ing us to an unlucky thirteen. Under the direction of our com- manding Major, Mrs. Krey, we skillfully completed the Junior class play, 'Romance in a Boarding House.' We suffered many hardships but were acclaimed by two satisfied crowds. We also entertained the graduating Generals with a Junior-senior banquet with a 'L9ers theme in honor of the seniors, also under skillful direction of Major Krey. Major Kray retired from service and as Captains we strove amidst a ruffle of drums and blaring of bugles for our graduating General's ranking. Upon entering we broke ranks to welcome Captain Glenn Rabbass, previously of Stanton, who raised our regiment to fourteen strong. At the halfway mark, we again welcomed Captain Dick Renninger of Hooper, rdsing our rank to fifteen. We managed a well-produced and acted senior play namely 'Dictator Dad' on April 20 and 21, 1950 under the efficient direction of Major Peterson. On May L, 1950, our troop broke one of the most strict rules of the service. We went A.W.O.L. and enjoyed ourselves to the utmost on our eager- ly planned and long awaited sneak day. On May 7, we were enter- tained at a Baccalaureate service and received our graduating gen- eral's rank at Commencement on May ll, 1950. We, as a happy graduating senior class wish to take this oppor- tunity to express our sincere gratitude to our parents and teach- ers for their assistance in our obtaining our diplomas, signifying our notable graduation, ranking as generals.
