East Hampden Maine 04444 Yonkowsky Mmuers From PIERRETTE FLORIST 502 Main Street Madawaska, Maine Congratulations to the Class of 1984 'Twos o Perfect Match Twos o table of periods, and families or rows; Not on element was olone, but with friends and their foes. The electrons were floating in clouds in the air In hopes that a friend for them soon would be there. The protons were snuggled in their positive nucleus While neutrons left them in charge without trying to assist. And Magnesium in her family, and Iodine in his row Had just thought of an idea that could satisfy both. When Magnesium wouldn't begin to converse. Iodine said to her, O.K.. I'll be first. Since I want to gain and you want to give. Let's make a compound and both happy we'll live.'' So away they went with their planned little task. When a question arose and Magnesium asked, What shall we do may I ask Mr. Iodine? There's a miniature space and two electrons of mine!” Iodine replied not. for he knew not what to say. And decided to turn and start walking away. More rapid than ions Magnesium ran To catch up with the lonely Iodine man. ’Now Iodine, now Iodine, in the seven A family. On Iodine, on halogen, to my arms opened lovingly! To the top of his voice he exclaimed in despair, Float away, float away, float away in the air! As dry clothes on the line blow. So did Magnesium and with nowhere to go. Search as she may. there was no one to love; No one like Iodine, to fit like a glove. And then in a twinkle she heard from the rear; The pacing and panting of her beloved little dear. As she stopped in her tracks and was turning around. There Iodine flew, to her feet with a bound. He was drenched with exhaustion from his head to his toes. And his outer shell was wet from regrets and his woes. A bundle of thoughts seemed to be crammed in his head. And he looked like a balloon in a pin factory-with dread. His electrons were stagnant, more than ever before; And the nucleus as a whole wasn't the once happy core. The stump of a tree he so desperately banked onto. And its four rings how it reminded him of his lost family two. He had a frail face, about ready to break; That shook when he talked for Magnesium's sake: I've been such a fool and don't really know why I left you to wander, to grieve, and to cryl” A wink of her eye, and a sigh of relief Soon led him to know that what she lacked now was grief. So he told her with pleasure, that their problem had a solution. It consisted of subscripts, and numbers of oxidation. And he filled his outer level with one of her electrons. And told her to meet his clone and give him the other. She sprang to her feet and did this request. And was happy to hove again. Iodine and his guest. So, balanced they lived, and said one clone to the other. If we would've known this before, it would've saved such a botherl” Brenda Mathieu Winner, Science Fiction Category, 1984 MSAD 53 Writing Contest. LITTLE BIRD One child is gifted But cares not the fact The other is gifted His work shows his craft. Fly away bold little bird Into the rising sun One child is beautiful As the golden shafts spear the cotton clouds But choses not to be groomed You will rise above the night The other is beautiful And shines as the moon. Though the preying hawks do rule the sky And the wild born swallows dip and fly One child is loved One small gold bird no longer cries But gives none in return His wings now strong, he sings his song The other is loved And shows love he has learned. And in the heat of the noon, when the wicked retreat You will shine In glory at your wondrous feat And that one child As the hawks bow low and resign their hold Who cares not of himself Will not get far in life For his soul has no wealth. The grass seems greener than ever. Some giving up, some continuing on, Following the dream of riches and gold mines. The wafer in the stream glistens. 1 returned to the town where I was stoylng And beheld an awful sight. The bud on the flower's stem People were leaving with packs and bags. They were giving up their fight. Leafs a flower and. The leaves on the trees form a foliage. 1 walked up to a tired old man. And reaching in my pocket, 1 thought I'd lend him a hand And give him what I'd dropped in it. The peaceful hue seems to last, The old man looked up and smiled. But only o few moments. And once began to live. What is gold, 1 thought to myself. As dawn becomes day. If gold Is not to give. Everything 1 see Is black as night. 1 watched the old man return to the town. It was a mighty wet, cold day at the state championships at Husson College. But our Pioneers were there giving their all as they had throughout the season. 67 Pioneers beat Lubec in semifinals, 3-1 ST. AGATHA — In a thrilling semifinal soccer game played at St. Agatha Wednesday (Oct. 26), the Wisdom Pioneers advanc- ed to the Eastern Maine Class C soccer finals by taking a 3-1 victory over Lubec before an en- thusiastic crowd. Paul Bouchard, Kevin Plourde and Gary Michaud scored unassisted goals in the second, third and fourth quarters to give Wisdom its 11th win of the season. Lubec’s Robert Bryant scored on an assist from Bruce Hodgder in the fourth quarter. Plourde’s clincher in the third quarter was a 22-yard shot that dented the Lubec net. The Pioneers had a decided edge in shots, 22-12, with goalie Junior McHenry stopping all 12 at- tempts. Andy Foss had 10 saves for Lubec who closed out its season at 9-4-2. Lubec was ranked fifth in the final C standings. Wisdom boys capture Class C soccer title by Legs Labbe ST. AGATHA — Top-ranked Wisdom edged second- seeded George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill 2-1 in an ex- citing battle here Saturday to cop the Class C Eastern Maine soccer crown. It was the first regional champion- ship ever for a Wisdom athletic team. Jay Edgecomb put Wisdom on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a shot past Stevens’ goalie Andy Eaton. Tom Daigle got the eventual game winner in the second quarter on a penalty kick. Wisdom led 2-0 at the half. After Pioneer keeper Junior McHenry stopped a penalty shot in the third quarter, the Eagles high-scoring ex- change student, Pokko Jarvela, came back later in the period to make it 2-1. Randy Astbury hit the right post on a wind driven line drive in the opening period and McHenry blocked one of his shots in the fourth quarter to keep Wisdom in front. The Pioneers held an 18-16 edge in shots on goal and dominated the action throughout the first half. McHenry had 16 saves for Wisdom while Eaton stopped 11 for GSA. Glenn Collin, Ken Dumais, Steve Dumond, Kevin Ouellette and McHenry keyed the defense for the Pioneers with Edgecomb and Daigle furnishing the scoring. Although not figuring in any of the scores, Paul Bouchard, John Dubois, Kevin Plourde and Gary Michaud were keys to the Wisdom attack. The Pioneers played an aggressive game and continual- ly pressured the Eagles. Wisdom’s defense was strong un- til the final gun. “Our team played well and the defense came through,” said Coach Mike Aldrete following the hard fought con- test. Aldrete was pleased with his team’s performance in winning the first Eastern Maine championship for Wisdom High School. ‘‘When the snow came in the final quarter the Pioneers picked up momentum,” said Aldrete. ‘‘Our defense was superb. It was a total team effort,” said the happy Wisdom coach. The East finals featured two evenly-matched teams. ' The EM champion Pioneers are now 12-1. George Stevens ended the season 10-4-1. Awards to the two teams were presented by Principal Paul Bouchard in the school cafeteria. Wisdom will face Class C West champion North Yar- mouth Academy Saturday for the state championship at the Husson College soccer field beginning at 1 p.m. The Pioneers advanced to their first state championship by recording wins over Washburn (2-0), Lubec (3-1), and George Stevens Academy (2-1). J 69 Wisdom takes title ST. AGATHA — The Wisdom High soccer team inched its first Eastern Maine Class C championship with a 2-1 victory over George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill last Saturday. The Pioneers of Coach Mike Aldrete will meet North Yarmouth Academy in the state final Saturday. Nov. 5 at a college field to be selected by the Maine Secon- dary School Principals’ Association. Wisdom is the only boys team from Aroostook County to reach the state soccer finals. The Houlton girls will also be making their first appearance in a state title game Satur- day against the powerful Waterville girls in Class A. The Pioneers enter state championship play with an im- pressive 12-1 record. North Yarmouth Academy has a 13-3-1 record after capturing the West C title over top- seeded and previously unbeaten Georges Valley of Thomaston. NY A was second-ranked in Western Maine. Wisdom and North Yarmouth will be looking for their first state championship. It will be an exciting matchup and playing in a state title game will be a very exciting ex- perience for Aldrete’s Pioneers. “This is the first time we have come this far,” Aldrete said. “Everyone is very excited here.” Aldrete has been coaching boys soccer at Wisdom since 1978 and this year’s team is strong in every position. The Pioneers have an aggressive defense and the front line is well balanced. In Saturday’s East finals at St. Agatha, the Pioneers faced a big strong group of Eagles from Stevens’ Academy but the quick reacting Wisdom defense made the difference. The Wisdom defense is led by seniors Glenn Collin. Ken Dumais and juniors Steve Guimond, Tom Daigle, Jay Edgecomb. Kevin Ouellette, and goalie Junior McHenry. The Pioneers’ front line features plenty of speed with seniors Gary Michaud. John Dubois, Kevin Plourde and junior Paul Bouchard leading the offense. 70 In 13 games played this season, the Pioneers have scored 58 goals and given up 10 to set new school records. Many believe that Western Maine teams still have an advantage over Eastern Maine in the number of players with skills and scoring ability. West teams have a dif- ferent style of soccer which results in low scoring games. Wisdom is one of three Eastern Maine boys teams who hope to overcome the Western Maine domination in state soccer play Saturday. Waterville faces Gorham in Class A and Piscataquis meets Gray - New Gloucester in Class B. One of Gorham s stars is Andy Ross, formerly of Fort Kent. Since the playoffs began in 1970, West teams have taken home all the titles. Eastern Maine is still looking for its first state champion in soccer. Soccer has the sports spotlight this weekend as the boys Class A. B, C and girls A and B state titles are on the line. Our congratulations to the Wisdom High soccer team and Coach Aldrete upon winning the school’s first Eastern Maine championship, and good luck Saturday in the state title game. The Pioneers are enjoying their best season ever. No matter what happens Saturday, their season will have been outstanding. BARBARA, LISA, TERRY — STATE DECA CHAMPIONS Students in Region 1 did extremely well at the 16th Annual DECA State Leadership Conference held on May 18 and 19th in Bangor. The two and a half days we spent in Bangor were quite an experience for our students. They had an opportunity to compare business activity in downtown Bangor and the Bangor Mall. This provided first hand observations of the importance of business location and the various implications involved. Friday afternoon students participated in two competency based events in the Bangor Mall. They dealt directly with business people in the stores which provided a realistic business setting. Saturday morning students all took a comprehensive exam In their area of expertise at Husson College. Out of a total of 74 possible awards, Region 1 came back with 21. This represents a 28% share of the awards given. The students of the St. John Valley can be very proud of their performance. We also had six students who came back as STATE DECA CHAMPIONS for 1984 because of their overall performance in their respective competitions. The following are all State trophy winners for their outstanding performances: Barbara Clavette — Wisdom — First place Advertising Services Lisa Michaud - Wisdom - First Place Apparel and Accessories Terry Morneault - Wisdom - First Place Phillips Free Enterprise Project Lisa Albert - Van Buren - Second Place - Phillips Free Enterprise Project Bruce Guimond - Fort Kent - Second Place - Food Marketing Ernest King — Van Buren — Third Place — Restaurant Marketing 1984 is a year that the Marketing and Distributive Education students will long remember. 102 Miss Elaine Michaud Elaine represented all Maine High Schools at President Ronald Reagan's Presidential Academic Fitness Awards Program in Washington. Unlike last year, this year's program took on a much more formal presence. The participants attended a workshop where they were taught a variety of rope skipping skills. Once this was done, the Wisdom Skippers (as they are called) went on a performance tour in several area schools. Their goal of raising $1,000 for the American Heart Association was surpassed as the Wisdom Skippers raised over $1,200. Their able and dedicated leader (and a real sweetheart too) was Mrs. Judy Bougie. Congratulations, Wisdom Skippers.
