The buildings, expanding, increasing in number, form the slowly but constantly shifting background. The people, the instantly changing element that creates the vital living portion. Every day, every moment, all ofthese are interacting in some way, each time in a different way. Because of the incessant change in these elements, no por- trait of this university will ever, nor can it ever, be com- plete. Only brief glimpses of different places, of various people doing a certain thing at a particular moment in time, can be presented in these pages. 3 A u . Classroom scenes, speciali events, teachers, students, sports arid' organizations create at pattern of memories. How do you draw a portrait of a year? From the chaos, abstract a class, an event, a 1'ace,a grou p. Frame them in ai campus scene and create a scra pbook of portraits of a year - at Wisconsin State University-River Falls. v X Is lg-'fb S . 1 A CF ' A Y .M , ..- A X, , vi .4 - -1 5.11, '- 1 We 3 1-'11 J., il: ' Lam' .- o .4 EJ?-. r A 5 ml? ACTIVITIES OPPORTUNITIES The most colorful elements in the portrait are the special events and activities that highlight the yea r. All-school events like Homecoming and Winter Carnival are the froth and fun of campus life. But other special events add a vital dimension to the academic experience. Fine Arts Week spurs creativity and an interest in the arts by bringing nationally known performers and artists to campus. The Grassroots Politics Conference applies national questions to state and local interests by attracting politicians and scholars to the campus podium. The World Affairs Forum presents opposing views of current foreign policy issues by visiting experts. Special-interest activities such as theatre and music, publications and debate, dance and rodeo, offer every student a chance to contribute his talents and energies to campus life. From the whirling maze of activities, each student chooses those compatible with his interests and abilities - those most suitable for framing in his portrait of a year. THE FACULTY CONCERN A university is no more than the sum of its faculty. A River Falls professor exhibits professional competence and scholarly achievement mixed with a large measure of that vital ingredient - concern for his students. Because his classes are generally small and taught in an informal atmosphere, he can devote special attention to the individual student. At River Falls, students are identified by name, not by number. -Hi I 4' ff, 'J' f' I I 2' 5 14, ,ff ff? , ,J 1 48' JV 11, 'I my-1 STUDENTS DEVELOPMENT TlThn ant wise and 'saJph,iLsiiu:aaized Stmdem, 'tJHEASEfm1inrA.,is the final vers,-ion M a serves mf QUli'i3IfA-i3EfE'L!v5 smaps?!mJ1s. Who can resist the frenzied chants and jack-in-the-box dance of the cheerleader? Stand up and cheer for Big Red - block that kick, guard that basket, pin the heavyweight, kill the umpire! River Falls students belong to a multitude of organizations: fraternal, professional, political, religious, social, cultural. Through these groups, the student meets people from other backgrounds and other countries, finds friends with like interests, and enhances his knowledge of his vocational field. Without organizations, the friendships they encourage, and the academic enrichment they provide, a portrait of a year would be only a preliminary sketch. 'LEARNING THE FREE SPIRIT A portrait of River Falls begins and ends with learning- in classroom, laboratory, library: through listening, reading, debating. The most rewarding moments of the year are those in which a phrase, an idea, a philosophy illuminates V a pattern for life. River Falls' th ree undergraduate colleges - Liberal Arts, Education and Agriculture - offer the student a choice of 30 majors. Small classes, accessible teachers, and a free and open atmosphere are conducive to a stimulating I academic experience. Learning is the element which frames the portrait at the University where the free spirit prevails. T4 -.X ' K !'f S I v 1 ' . . ! Psychology Signature Just as a portrait is signed by its creatorthis Portrai ofa Year is also to be finished with a signature. This signature is only that of one person but it also represents a number of people who have put a great amount of their time and work into the production of this book. There are various people who are to be thanked for the work they have done, incl udingthe editors and photographers. Very special thanks go to Mary Lepori who not only did her job but also took over a number of other jobs as the size of the staff dwindled. Thanks also go to Dennis Stern who wrote the lines of poetry in the Activities Section. This book has incorporated in it two ideas which have not been used in previous Nleleteans. The biggest change is that the underclassmen pictures have been left out. And some faculty group pictures were taken to be used in that section. Whether or not these ideas will be carried through in succeeding years will depend on the decisions of fu- ture editors. Jerry Frigo, Editor 1. Y,,.,,.--q - 'Yr 1 i E l l
