The welfare of all women students is the general purpose of the organization. More specific purposes include: the welcoming of incoming freshmen; sponsorship of the home- coming queen, her robe, crown, flowers, and reception; management of the annual Christmas Tea formerly handled by Miss Hothorn; charge of Mother's Day which has become a tradition on our campus; and lost but not least, sponsorship of on oll-girl banquet held in the spring for the installation of the new officers elected in March. The organization publishes a handbook which contains the club's constitution, instruc- tions for election of ofticers, greeting from the Dean of Women and club omcers, a copy of housing rules posted in all CWA approved houses, and other information which may prove helpful to girls beginning college life. The last paragraph of this handbook entitled, Campus Living, sums up the aims of the organization as follows: College can be a rich experience, sociolly as well as oca- demicolly; what you gain from your years in college will depend upon you. You will meet hundreds of new people - your adviser, your instructors, other students - each of whom will form some opinion of you. Endeavor to be what you desire to appear as you make each of the many choices which will confront you in the many new opportunities which lie ahead. Meetings were built around speakers, Bible study, the impressive Candlelight Dedication Service, and hymn tests. The YW also canvassed the town in an old clothing drive for needy Europeans. In order to finance sending a delegate to the Geneva Conference, candy sales were held. The YW girls closed the year with c picnic-outing in the park. The YWCA and the YMCA have worked together on various proiects throughout the year. Their first ioint proiect was the traditional Freshman Mixer on the first night of the school year. From there they progressed into the YM-YW breakfast discussions, which were usually held at Professor Jacobson's home twice monthly at 7:30 Sunday mornings. During the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter seasons, the two groups held special ves- per services at the churches. They also cooperated on the World Student Service Fund Drive to aid foreign students. Perhaps their most succesesful project was the February weekly meetings which this year took the form of a courtship and marriage lecture series. The advisers for YM are Professors Jacobson and Sheldon; YW advisers are Miss Liene- man and Mrs. A. S. Johnson. Back row: McLaughlin, Forthun, Greenfield, Krueger, Murry. The stupendous scoring oce led the Falcons to their third straight conference championship and in so doing tallied 650 points in 27 games. Thus in three years of collegiate partici- pation Note has scored 1735 points, only 464 short of the oII-time collegiate record of 2199 points. With one more year of competition remaining, Big Note has on excellent chance of establishing a new record. We solute you, Note DeLong, for your splendid achievements and brilliant leadership. Whitewater Plotteville mappwoomd-- O-'OO-'OO-d-'O The River Falls Falcons, defending conference Champs, remained in the 1948 football title chase until the final week of the season, but a long string of iniuries to key men took its toll, and the fighting Falcons dropped their last two conference starts, thus giving the Blugolds of Eau Claire the state champion- ship. With the loss of such sterting performers as Burk- hard, Vanderhoof, Werndli, Levenick, Teske, Jansen, Tobias, and Schuman from the '47 squad, Coach George Schiagenhauf and assistants Kolberg and Hoy were forced to rebuild the River Falls eleven. Opti- mism ran high as the '48 Falcon squad reported for the first practice session September lst, despite the loss of the afore-mentioned gridmen. This optimism quickly changed to pessimism, as one by one highly regarded players suffered serious injuries. As the season opened against Hamline, veteran players such as quarterback Gordon Oison, aIl-conterence backs Schock and Feiler, regular guards McCardle and Glauner were all missing from the lineup due to in- juries. After the opening loss to Hamline University, the Falcons came back to win four successive games, but with the championship hanging in the balance the old iniury iinx struck again and the Falls aggre- gation went down to three successive defeats. CHEERLEADERS Top: Fredeen. Center row: Schaer, Radkey. Front row: Mattson, Hedlund, Rebollar. 113 Despite the disappointing finish of the team many of Coach Schlagenhauf's stars reaped individual re- wards. The Falcons placed more men ifourt on the AH-State eleven than any other team in the Wiscon- sin State Teachers College Conference. Halfbacks Cardinal and Schock along with Wilson at center and McCardle at guard made the honorary team. In addition to this the veteran Cardinal led the con- ference in scoring as scat-back Bunny tallied six touchdowns and added eight P. A. T.'s for 38 points. Highlighting the past season's grid activities was the stirring 27-18 triumph over Superior State at Ra- mer Field. It was the peak effort of the season for the Falcons. Following this sensational win, River Falls ran into the big, bad Blugolds of Eau Claire in the Falcons homecoming clash. After a terrific strug- gle Eau Ciaire emerged the winner 13-7, and an in- iury riddled River Falls squad could not regain enough strength to come out victorious against La Crosse and Gustavus Adolphus in the season's finals. The River Falls eleven had good personnel but sel- dom could field their strongest line due to recurring iniuries. Gordon Grilley sweeping in against Eau Claire in the homecoming game RIVER FALLS 0-HAMLINE 20 In the opening game of the i948 grid season 0 hard driving Hamiine University team from St. Paul rolled over a makeshift River Falls eleven 20-0 at RC- mer Field. With five regulars on the i947 champion- ship team out with injuries, Coach Schlogenhout was forced to start a relatively inexperienced lineup. The first quarter was scoreless and both teams had difficulty in getting their offense to click. However, in the second period the Pipers intercepted a Falcon pass to score the initial points of the game. The Fol- cons struck back with their best offensive spurt of the game with Cardinal, Gordon Grilley and Feiler leading the way. A fumble halted the advance and the locals never threatened again. In the second half the Falcons wilted in the heat and the Pipers scored twice to rack up 0 20-0 triumph Willis Castle and Sam Richie were the Hemline stars while Gene Cordi- nol and Bob Wilson did yeomon work for River Falls. RIVER FALLS 28-WHITEWATER 19 The opening conference game saw a revitalized Falcon team come from behind to soundly defeat the visitors from Whitewater. Still handicapped by numerous iniuries the Falcons fell behind 12-0, as speedy Don Erickson raced 65 yards with a River Falls punt in the first quarter for a T. D., and later in the second quarter 0 blocked punt gave the White- water boys their second six points. The Falcon T showed signs of life in the first quarter and finally in the second canto c: varied running and passing game gave the locals their first T. D. of the '48 season. A five-ycnrd pass from Cardinal to DeLong climaxed a 72-yard scoring drive. in the second half the Falcons broke loose with 0 strong running and passing game which enabled them to go into the lead. A 45-yard drive ended in a scoring pass, Cardinal to Gibbs. Later guard Norb Studelska blocked a Quaker punt for 0 safety and iust a few plays later another Falcon drive ended successfully with Hcrkness pitching to big Note DeLong for another T. D. Whitewater come back to tally on 0 pass, but little Gene Cardinal scooted 18 yards in the fourth quarter to ciinch the win. Cardinal, running and passing, was the out- standing feature of the game along with some nice pass receiving by the Falcon ends. Freshmen Hark- ness and Linehan showed Up well in the contest. RIVER FALLS 26-STOUT 7 A visiting Falcon grid team gave their hosts, the Blue Devils of Stout Institute, a neat 26-7 trimming in a night game at Menomonie. The Falcon line with McCordle and Glouner getting back in action stopped Stout's rushing attack cold and at the some time opened gaping holes for the speedy River Falls backs. Acting Captain Gene Cardinal raced 55 yards for the first Falcon score and early in the second pe- riod quarterback Harley Horkness sneaked over the double line for the second score. Gordon Schock was back in action for the first time and his powerful running sparked the Falcon offensive surge. Along with Cord, Schock tore the Blue Devil line to shreds to tally again in the fourth canto. Everett Nook Grilley swept end for 48 yards and the final Falcon score. The Blue Devils' passing attack finally ac- counted for o Stout tally in the final minutes against the River Falls reserves. It was the best alI-oround game played by the Falcons thus for in the season. RIVER FALLS 12-PLATTEVILLE 0 The Plotteville Pioneers took on the River Falls Fal- cons in their homecoming tray and in turn the obliging Falcons took the Pioneers into camp 12-0. At the kickoff 0n aroused Pioneer aggregation stopped the Falcons' offensive efforts and quickly generated a drive of their own. They carried to the Falls tive-yord line only to be halted by a stirring defensive stand by the Falcons. Schock then carried for ten otter River Falls gained possession. Cardinal streaked for another 20, Schock and Feiler blasted for short gains to the Plotteville 38-yard line. Here Feiler powered his way through the line and literally exploded into the clear for the first score. The second quarter saw another Falcon ottensive display, with Schock and Feiler accounting for most of the yard- age. Gordy cut through tackle for the final eight yards and the Falcons had c: 12-0 lead for the half. The final 30 minutes was played largely in mid-field as neither team could get rolling. PlotteviHe fired pass after pass, but on alert secondary defense and o rushing Falcon line erased the temporary threat. RIVER FALLS 27-SUPERIOR 18 After three consecutive conference wins the Fal- cons ran into their stiftest competition of the year in the Superior Yellowiockets. A courageous come- back enabled the hard-hitting Falcons to score a 27- 18 triumph. Walter Doc West, Superior quarter- back, uncorked 0 series of beautiful posses which gave the Yellowiockets two first period tallies. Swept oft their feet by the Superior aerial game, River Butch McCardle, Guard 115 Dick Swenson, Guard Wayne Sinnen, End Falls couldn't get going until the second period. After the second Superior score, Gene Cardinal and Gor- don Schock carried 60 yards in three plays to give the fighting Faicons their first score. Cardinal streaked 28 yards for the big six points. Another Superior threat was checked and the Falcons im- mediately drove 80 yards for the second T.D. Again Schock and Cardinal were the big guns in the drive. Gordon Olson scored the touchdown on a sneak over center. Cardinal's perfect placement gave the Fal- cons a 14-12 half-time lead. HOWever, River Falls wasn't through yet, as they received the second half kick-off and promptly marched to their third counter. Schock blasted over the goal for the score after he, Cardinal and Feiler tore off the yardage. The Falcons turned to the air to account for their fourth score as Gordy Olson Hipped a pay-oft pass to end Nate DeLong. Superior came back on West's passes to score again, but this was the Falcon's game and the aroused locals scored an impressive 27-18 win over a worthy toe. Dave Ruhsam, End RIVER FALLS 7--EAU CLAIRE 13 The annual River Falls homecoming game saw the unbeaten Blugolds of Eau Claire smash headlong into the unbeaten Falcons of River Falls. Played before the largest crowd ever to see a game at Ramer Field, the game was hard fought throughout, but Eau Claire scored in the last quarter to break a 7-7 tie and thus emerge the winner. A big and active Eau Claire line played havoc with the Falcon T and with the exception of Gordon Schock the River Falls backs had trouble getting any- where. An early Eau Claire surge was halted short of the goal and play see-sawed back and forth until mid-way in the second period, when Harley Harkness heaved c1 beautiful aerial into the waiting arms of Bunny Cardinal who ran to score. The play cov- ered 52 yards. The lead was short-Iived, as Eau Claire took advantage of a fumbled punt to score just before the half ended. Gordon Schock injured a shoulder in the tirst-halt play and was forced to leave the game. His departure meant the beginning of the end for the Falcons, as their ottense failed to click without the expiosive running of Schock. The Falcons battled valiantly, but Eau Ciaire's powerful line took its toll and Finally fullback Bob Schaaf was sprung Ioose for 52 yards and the winning touch- down. RIVER FALLS 13-LA CROSSE 39 Obviously down after suffering the heartbreaking defeat to Eou Claire, the River Falls Falcons tell he tore a vengeful La Crosse eleven 39-13 at La Crosse. Again the old iniury iinx cropped out and the Falcons manpower was seriously limited. The game begun badly for River Falls, as La Crosse blocked Cardinal's punt and recovered for a touchdown. Little Gene quickly righted that as he streaked around end for 66 yards for 0 score and added the point after to give the Falcons 0 7-6 lead. However, this was the Indians' night and they really went on the worpath to grab a 19-7 holt-time lead. Ace Loomis, Mirschl, Evans and Dohr led a powerful running game which shattered the sluggish Falcon line. River Falls rallied in the second half to cut the margin to 19-13 as on Olson to DeLong pass resulted in a 20-yard scoring thrust. Another Falcon aerial offensive tell short and La Crosse broke loose for three touchdowns in the last quarter to swamp the Falls eleven 39-13. RIVER FALLS TS-GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS 39 A stubborn but crippled Falcon teem iourneyed to St. Peter to meet the powerful Gusties and fell victim to the weH-monned Minnesotans 39-13. The tricky, speedy Falcon T formation gave the Gusties con- siderable trouble, but River Falls with several players on the iniury list, iust couldn't muster the man-power to keep on even terms with Gustavus. Big, tost-mov- ing Red Malcolm moved for yardage almost at will and personally accounted for three of the six Gustie touchdowns. Gene Cardinal made the first Falcon score in the first half and continued his fine ploy. Harley Horkness intercepted a wild Gustie pass late in the ball game and sped 30 yards for the final Fol- con T.D. Meanwhile Gustavus pounded through and around the Falcons for six touchdowns, enabling them to emerge as 3913 winners. The non-confer- ence fray with Gustavus ended the college careers of end Dove Ruhsom, tackle Wayne Sinnen and guard Butch McCordle. I 6 130 THE LIPS: CHAMPIONS 0F NATIONAL LEAGUE Front row: Cardinal, Richmond, Coach Olson. Under the able direction of Oscar Siowall, the Intramural Basketball program reached a new height, as a record- breaking total of 25 teams competed in the two leagues set up by Mr. Siowall and the Intramural Student Committee. In the moior or National League the powerful Lips, coached by Gordon O1son, rambled on to eight consecu- tive wins to grab the regular season pennant. Falcon oth- letic stars, Claire Tobias, Gene Cardinal, Eugene Deiss, Bud Thompson, among others, were the kingpins of the chomp- ion Lips team. The Sad Socks finished in second place, as they lost but one game. Kenny Fuher and Oliver Lerum were the big guns all season for the Socks. Other con- tending teams which Finished high in the standings and which gave the leaders plenty of competition were the Five Aces, led by the Miles brothers, Dave Sewer, and Neil Mulhollam. The Whiz Kids, sparked by Pete Hendrickson, LoVerne Gust, and Don Rogness, lost a few heart-breoking decisions, but played excellent ball. A veteran team of the Intramural League, the Six Old Men,' was another strong contender. The minor or American League pennant race proved to be a run away for the Trempeoleou Sessions who were led by 6-foot-6-inch center, Earl Everson. The Heort-o-North f1nished second to the Sessions with a five won, two lost record. Allen Peterson and Dole Amundson provided the scoring punch for the North boys. In a surprising show of power the Trempeoleou Sessions, champions of the American League, walked away with the Intramural Tournament Championship by edging the fa- vored Five Aces in the title clash by a 45-39 score. Trempealeou, paced by their big center, Eorl Everson 0nd shorpshooting Willis Johnson, advanced through the lower bracket with comparative eose, while the Five Aces encountered stift competition in their advance through the upper bracket. The Lips, champions of the National League, were the pre-tournoment favorites but were elimi- noted in the quorter-Fmols by the Sod Socks, who in turn were defeated by the Five Aces. The championship game saw the Trempeauleau boys put on a blazing fourth quarter rally which left the Aces in their wake. The big factors in the Trempeoleou win were the fine rebounding of Everson and the nice shooting of Johnson. Baldy Miles, Dee Durst and Pistol Mulhollom led the valiant Five Aces in their bid for the championship. Although emphasis was placed on the basketball pro- gram, 0 number of other intramural activities were carried on. During the full term several touch football teams com- peted every week in the Intramural Touch Football League, and the sport proved to be a success. A winter-Iong activity was bowling, also on outstanding success. Six teams com- peted in the bowling league and Club 21 and the Falcons emerged as the co-chompion bowling teams. Facilities for ping pong, swimming, boxing, volley ball, etc., although limited, were available to interested students. An extensive Intramural Softball League is planned for the spring. The defending 1948 champions, the Blue Cops, have most of their team intact and with ace pitcher Cal Timm back in the told, they are favorites for the crown.
