Located in River Falls Hg J in 1875, the school has been an important factor in the educational development of Western Wisconsin. For many years, in its early history, the River Falls Normal School not only rendered an important service in the preparation of teachers forthis section of the state, but supplied also general educational opportunities to the ambitious young men and women of W'estern Wisconsin. The purposes of the school in its early history are thus expressed by its president of that time, The school offers professional, literary, and scientific advantages to teachers, and it affords facilities for all students who wish to improve them- selves by reiiection and study. From the outset the school was marked by a spirit of en- thusiasm and devotion to high professional ideals. Earnest and high-minded men and women impressed their characters on the institution to such a degree that their influence is felt down to the present time. A normal school is pre-eminently a school for public service. More important than the excellence of academic instruction and the degree of professional skill attained, is the spirit with which its graduates go out into the field of service to which they are dedi- cated. It is through the capacity of its graduates to perform a high type of service in the public schools of the state as teachers and as community workers, that the River Falls Normal School makes its contribution to the state. 314- C2 Page 2I
