Table of Contents Administration .... 7 Fall..................14 Winter................31 Spring................55 . 71 Seniors State of Wisconsin Office of the Governor TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SENIOR CLASS: It gives me great pleasure to congratulate you as you graduate from the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. Your success is reason for celebration and pride. The years you have spent at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf have prepared you for continued achievement in your lives. I hope all of you will set high goals and find success in the many possibilities which await you throughout your lives. With best wishes. 2 JUNE. 1065 Dear Students: Graduation from high school is a significant occasion in one's life. It signals a commitment to personal growth which is full of hope and based on a solid foundation of knowledge. I speak not only to this year's graduating class, but to all of you at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf when I say that a high school diploma is truly a key which will open the doors to your future. In reflecting upon your years in school, I hope you remember the challenges. Think for a moment about something that was once difficult for you and i6 now a simple act which you accomplish easily. That is learning. Often the things which serve us the best are the hardest to learn and take the most discipline and concentration. But mastering those skills also brings a great sense of joy and a high level of personal fulfillment. You have overcome obstacles in your life; and you are equipped with the skills necessary to continue with courage, optimism and integrity. There are many who care about you. We share your dreams and encourage you to reach out and shape your world. There are no limits on what you can do. In a sense, you set your own boundaries for what you will achieve. Very best wishes to you in all you do. Your family, your teachers, your friends and I are proud of you. SENIOR ISSUE 3 4 JUNE. 1985 DEDICATION Betty Kelly Wu Ido Cordano We. the Class of 1985, are both honored and proud to dedicate our yearbook to two individuals that have given their time and talents to our school for many years. One of the individuals has worked as a child care counselor at WSD for the past 29 years. Her patience and willingness to help the girls, and provide them with a home away from home are deeply appreciated. The other individual has worked at WSD as a printing instructor for the past 34 years. He has been a football, basketball, track and Held, and baseball coach for 27 years and 14 years as Athletic Director. His discipline and encouragement have helped each of us to grow. It is with both great pride and pleasure that we dedicate our yearbook to Mrs Betty Kelly and Mr. Waldo Cordano. 6 JUNE, 1985 John 8- Shipman June I. 1985 ttwr Senior . During the first few months here, I was sometimes homesick But soon my life began to revolve around my host family, my new classmates at Wisconsin School for the Deaf, and people in the community. At home. I am a student at St. Johns Catholic School At my school, students must wear uniforms. I am the only deaf student there. I also went to St Mary’s School for the Deaf when I was younger St Mary's is an oral school, so I am learning sign language for the first time in the United States. Many Australian traditions follow British traditions For example, we always have tea with scones in the afternoon Australians feel a strong alliance with Britain and her royal family. I have come to love America and her people. I am deeply grateful to AFS for giving me the opportunity to live here. —by Anne Bohill IC YE SUOMI Katia Hsciannm Harantta We have an International Christian Youth Exchange student from Finland who is attending our school this year. Her name is Katja Marianna Mcrcntie Katja attended Oulu School for the Deaf in Oulu which  s in the northern part of Finland Her family lives in Kupio Her host family lives in Milwuakcc. She really enjoys meeting people here in America. She loves roller skating which she had never tried in Finland. Corn which is not grown in Finland is her favorite. Also, she enjoys new games—Four Squares or Eight Squares which is popular here at WSD. She is glad that she can do whatever the American people are doing Holidays arc different in Finland. They do not have Halloween, Thanksgiving. St Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick's Day. They have Name's Day and Midsummer which arc not in America. Name's Day occurs every day. about three to six names are honored each day. For example, people whose names arc recognised on that doy get some treats. Kama's name is always recognized on March 25th Midsummer is a celebration on July 22 when it is the first night that does not get dark and you can sec all night long. They have bonfires for their parties Also, on December 6th. they have Independent Day to celebrate their independence from Russia in 1917.
