tfosietaosid . . . Scaile i eMail 'UJUxt i Sce+te beJUcatio-n We respectfully dedicate this yearbook to two retiring teachers Mrs. Helen Thomas and Mrs. Avis Stewart Mm. Avit Stecua'it Whose enthusiastic activity in the interests of the school commands our respect; whose untiring and capable efforts have placed our school among the best; whose character and personality move us to profound admiration; and whose broad and sympathetic understanding makes her our sincere and helpful friend. Mm. cMe ten lltontaA. The best we have to give, we give, to her who gave her best to us. A small return for 34 years, of deepest thought and hopes and plans devoted to our interests. And we, within our hearts, hold fast. A look, a thought, a phrase, or rhyme, which planted by her diligence, will some day, challenged, come to mind, and bring our goal more in sight. State Adminiit'iatioH. Hon. Gaylord Nelson Governor George E. Walton State Superintendent of Public Instruction John W. Melcher State Supervisor, Bureau for Handicapped Children, Department of Public Instruction Samuel D. Miletky Director, Bureau for Handicapped Children, Department of Public Instruction [3] Ilte. Commencement Day is your reward for your accomplishments and achievements during your stay in school. It is a day of mixed emotions, happiness, and sadness as you leave school. Commencement Day also means you are now starting out in a new life. You are now entering into a new society of earning your living and meeting new friends. You have been taught these things and you are ready to greet the world with a smile of confidence. You know how to work, how to work with people, and how to work for people. Have faith in yourself and trust in God. W e have faith in you, which leads 11s to believe you will be successful. With all good wishes- Kenneth F. [5] IdboUo'U The Class of 1959 appreciates very much the kindness and constant assistance of our advisors, Mrs. Dorothy Strieby and Mr. Joseph Kopas. They were always ready to help us with our plans for graduation and with many ideas for making monc r for our Senior trip to Canada. Mrs. Dorothy Strieby has given a great deal of her time to us, and she worked very hard in helping us with our money -raising projects. Because of her efforts, we did not have too many financial worries. And to Mr. Joseph Kopas who was very patient and helpful with us, while we were compiling our Senior Number of The Wisconsin Times, we wish to express our sincerest thanks. To both Mrs. Dorothy Strieby and Mr. Joseph Kopas, we want to say, “Goodbye, and thank you for all you have done for us. Vocatia+uzl 5bep.a'ii+ne U [29] [30] WluA Who A 7 Ufi to (lememk i The Senior Class had a 1,000 mile recreational and educational trip early in May. We went with our sponsors, Mrs. Strioby and Mr. Kopos and Principal, Mr. Ransdell, in two oars to Milwaukee, where we got th« City of Midland Ferry, which is the largest, fastest and mo3t streamlined im Lake Michigan. It took us 6 hours to croas the lake to Ludington, Michigan. We stayed overnite at White Cape Motel in Traverse City. The next day we left for Muckinac Island where cars an not allowed, only horses, carriages and bicycles. It has many quaint houses, stores and hotels. The Grand Hotel then is the largest resort hotel in the world and has the world’s longest porch. We stayed overnite at the Chippewa Hotel. The next day we cross: d the Mackinac Bridge, which is 5 miles long. It took us from Michigan to the uppc r peninsula enroute to the Soo Canal and Canada. The Soo Canal has more tonnage pasing thur it than any other canal in the world. We stayed at St. Marys, River Motel in Sault St. Marie, Clanada overnite. We had an enjoyable time there. The last day we set sail for Delavan and arrived at WSD late in the afternoon. The trip was a most memorable and profitable one and will not soon be forgotten. [31] fyaA well • • • It is with mixed feelings of happiness and regret that we leave the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. Our stay here has been too brief, yet the years were fruitful ones, full of joy, work, fun and learning. It seems only yesterday that we spent our first days on the campus— now, years later, we leave with a genuine appreciation for what the members of the Staff have done, and with the hope that we will justify the faith they have in us. Our memories of them, our schoolmates and school days will never. never die. Charlene Sjoquist.
