Tremendous school spirit is echoed in sports events as well as in the classroom. Extra- curricular activities in speech, music, sports and many other fields furnish students with opportunities to develop natural abilities and interests. The school serves 375 students from the entire Madison area. 9' 52' if 1,f 4 , CALVIN GALE 1' Your first encounter with the Class of 1958 was our struggle to make Sophomore Shuffle a success. You stuck with us through the trials and tribulations of the Junior Prom, sharing our worries and helping us solve our problems. Your entire spring vacation was spent at school with us in our last attempt to finish Prom decorations. Once again in our senior year you patiently assisted in preserving order at our class meetings. Your constructive suggestions made suc- cesses of o11r Senior Swingand our final endeavor, the commencement exercises. Our appreciation for these things was surpassed only by our respect and admiration for you in the classroom. Your patience and under- standing always inspired from us our best work. For these reasons, we the Senior Class dedicate the 58 Baby Badger to you Mr Gale ral 1,4-9' 7075 71 N3HCY Munson SERVICE PIN D A R- AWARD BADGER BOYS STATE Ed Coombs B111 Haber Ray Hamel SERVICE PIN WHS SPEAKER man Ray Hamel AT BAPTIST CHURCH STUDENT COUNCIL GISHOLT PROFICIENCY BAUSH 8a LOMB FRENCH MATHEMATICS SPANISH I SPEAK FOR DEMCXIRACY ENGLISH 8 ENGLISH 10 SPEECH '7 HOME ECONOMICS SCIENCE 8 MUSIC ALGEBRA Judy Lemon Drck Pauley Dave Wee Laurme Olson Barry Olson Pete Ross Elyse Aronson Emme Avsar Gall Lefco 1 Solverg BJorke Drck Schacht Dave Saunders Martha Stone Bob Schacht Ted Groves Pete Wolfe UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN Judy Lemon Drck Reznrchek ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP Toby Mitchell REISINGER TEACHING SCHOLARSHIP Ruth Groves NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP Toby Mlrchell NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP CERTIFICATES Ruth Groves Dave Wee GISHOLT EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP John Youngqurst ART SCHOLARSHIP Karen Herman GIRLS PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10 Lavone Stehr BIOLOGY Howard Beale SPANISH 10 Elyse Aronson PLANE GEOMETRY Chlp Trerchel LATIN 10 Dave Kmnamon AMERICAN HISTORY Mary Prmce MATHEMATICS '7 Pete Wadsack HONOR PINS Iunrors B111 Haberman Karen STATE DISCUSSION WINNERS Dave Strobel Isaksen Pete Cohen Nrck Zawackr Ray Hamel Elyse Aronson Mary Pnnce Errcka Schwenn Semors not prctured Ruth Groves Toby Mrtchell Perry Shultz 5Caro1 Youmans 1 'I I 1 I -. This fall Wisconsin High fielded a cross country team for the second time in its history, The only returning man from last year's squad was Captain Buck Edmunds. Coach Sam Mylin did some quick recruiting, and at one time the Preps fielded ten men in a meet. At mid- season the harriers were hit by the flu, which cut the team to one man. The team made a comeback and placed 14th in the state. The Preps were paced by captain-elect Joe Swanson with two firsts and Captain Buck Edmunds with a pair of thirds in dual meet competition with Central and the West B's. A lack of height plagued the Badger Preps again this year. Although only averaging 5'10 per man, the Preps had the best defense in the conference and at one point the second best defense average in the state. Wisconsin High started fast by taking six out of its first seven games, including two victories by one point. The balance of the season was almost a complete reversal, overtime decisions over Edgerton in the last game of the season. The Preps had balanced scoring from the five starters - Bill Haberman, Roy Dillabough, Pete Cohen, Ed Coombs and Dick Smith - and fin- ished with a 6-8 conference record good enough for a fifth place tie. Entering subregional tournament play on March 6, the squad lost to a rough Middleton five, 57-47. Recovering quickly they defeated Prairie Du Sac 56-45 and earned the right to play for consolation honors at Reedsburg. Despite a late rally, however, they lost their final game to Wisconsin Dells 58-52.
