C. THE WARRIOR Senior Class Trip On Sunday nite, March 27, at approximate- ly 8:20 Qslightly detained by a certain Miss Greenleafj We embarked upon The Senior Class Trip. We were greeted by the Lincoln delegation, their chaperone, and Mrs. With- am. During the first hundred miles of the journey, quantities of pizza, rolls and potato chips were consumed, helped along by a sol- itary quart of chocolate milk - interrupting this was a brief stop at Portland, where cof- fee and cokes were served. Brief stop in Portsmouth for bus repairs. Driver lost in maze of New Haven roads - Mrs. Witham plays Good Samaritan, directs the lost soul. Leave New Haven. Finally - we've arrived ! We're actually in New York City - after four years and countless covered dish sup- pers, we ARE here. The girls are shown to rooms on the 5th floor, boys on the 2nd, in the Taft. Breakfast hastily consumed at the cafe- teria, followed by departure on a tour of Rockefeller Center, on whose Observation Roof a group picture was taken. Then on to Radio City Music Hall, Where we saw the movie Glass Slipper, the awe-inspiring Easter Pageant, and the spectacular Rock- ettes. After dinner a group started for the Statue of Liberty, but missing the first boat, did a Cook's Tour of Wall Street - finally caught the ferry to Bedloe Island, where most of us climbed to the crown - the descent was slow and painful. That empty feeling had be- gun to hit us, so dinner seemed to be the next logical move - six of us, including Mrs. Witham, tripped down to the Grill Room in the hotel, where Vincent Lopez and orchestra made merry music. Mrs. Witham absorbed several raw clams, while we watched with interest for possible reactions - none. Thence on an NBC tour, where Elzada dem- onstrated sound effects. Back to the hotel at about 10:30, where a brief party was held in Mrs. Witham's room. Tuesday a.m. at 5:30 a few brave and hardy souls tore themselves away from the com- forts of home, and trekked down to the Dave Garroway Show. From 6:30 until an hour later, there we stood, and were finally re- warded when the camera turned- our way - after being televised, we stayed afew min- utes for courtesy's sake, and left. At about 8:00, the bus left for Washington - equipped with a swell driver Cask one of the girls - THE WARRIOR she's got his phone numberj. Stopped at An- napolis in the afternoon, and arrived at the Hotel Raleigh in Washington at about 4:30 where we were dispersed to our rooms - all on the same floor! That evening, with the ex- ception of a few who went swimming, the group went to see Cinerama. Home again and a quiet evening. Next day: Mt. Vernon, home of George Washington. Everyone was very much impressed with the beauty and charm of this typically South- ern home, the furnishings, the outbuildings, and the gracious gardens. One of us wanted to buy it, but it was already deeded to a Lincoln boy. Following this, we were shown the Jefferson Memorial, renowned as site of Washington's symbolic cherry blossoms. That evening when at the top of the Washington Monument we could see these cherry trees bathed in colored lights - a truly beautiful sight. At the FBI Building, our guide described various methods of crime detection, and ex- plained factors which lead them to almost definite arrest of their quarry. Last stop in the building was a firearms and marksman- ship exhibition - which convinced some that a life of crime wasn't for them! ! After din- ner that nite, the tour continued, beginning at the Lincoln Memorial, where we observed the face of Lincoln portraying three different emotions: on one side determination, then happiness, and then sorrow. Leaving the Memorial, we Went to the Ford Theater, place of Lincoln's assassination by Booth, the craz- ed Southern actor - here, although the place is no longer a theater, but rather a museum for chronicling Lincoln's life, the outlines of the stage and boxes were shown, with draw- ings of Booth's fleeing footsteps. Across the street from the theater stands the house where Lincoln died. The room in which his death occurred is furnished in copies or res- torations of the actual furnishings. At the Congressional Library, after seeing the dis- plays and exhibits, we viewed the main read- ing room, and the endless rows of shelves, crammed with reference books used by stu- dents and government workers. Then we were shown the Archives Building, where important documents of the country are THE WARRIOR sheltered: the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, original manuscripts. From here, we returned to the hotel, just in time for a dance held by Lee High School, one of the school bands in town for the Cher- ry Blossom Festival. Another party in Mrs. Witham's room. Thursday took us to the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, where ffrom a distancel we were permitted to gaze fondly at 100,000 dol- lar bills. Then on a tour of the Capitol and White House, where the Lincoln group pre- sented lobsters for the President to Mr. Gruthner. After this, most of us visited the zoo fand relativesb, then left for the Fran- cisian Monastery, which is a partial repro- duction of the catacombs and the temple at Jerusalem. In the evening, after being given rather misleading directions by a certain group, a few of us finally got a meal in time to rush back up the same streets we had just covered to witness the Cherry Blossom Par- ade. While waiting for the parade to begin, we were entertained by a charming Texan, who led cheers for Sam Houston. Returning to the hotel, a party was held in Mr. Davis' room - music was supplied by two wander- ing minstrels. Friday morning at 8:45, We left for NYC - it had been so lovely in Washington that We all hated to leave. Arrived NYC about three - after getting rooms, some walked several thousand blocks to Central Park - watched the ice-skaters, and rode on the Merry-Go- Round. After dinner, to Madison Square Gar- den and the circus - peanuts and popcorn and elephants and aerialists ! ! ! Back to the hotel again for some, while others did the town. Saturday morning a small group went to the United Nations Building, while the majority either slept or went shopping. In the evening many of us took one last look at the city - a small group saw the play Anas- tasia, At 10:30 the bus arrived, although scheduled for later - everyone was ready at 11:00, but detained briefly, we left at 11:30. Sunday morning at 9:00 17 sets of beat feet landed in Wiscasset, still rolling from the long bus ride. Reality struck us in the form of a cold wind - this was no longer N.Y.C. And Back To School.
