On October 19 a Harvest Dance was held at the Gym. A good time was had by those who attended. V .- A v THE RED AND BLACK YACHT TRIP ATOUND MANHATTAN Tne class met in the lobby of the hotel at 1 30 and left by bus for the pier to catch the excursion boat for the trip around Manhattan While waiting for the boat to leave we talked and looked around at the different sights The Constitution was in lox repairs at the next dock over from ours The loud speaker announced the arrival of the Q een Elizabeth just coming in from Europe You can just imagine what a thrill th s gave us as It was totally unexpected We left our pier at 2 30 and turned around toward the Queen Elizabeth so that we might have a better v1ew of her many on the boat took pictures We saw the Statue of Liberty Ellis Is land where the immlgrants come in the Lipton Tea Company and many other places and buildings We saw the docks We also saw a dock painted red white and blue like an Amer1can flag and were told that this 1S the dock the home coming serv ice men come in to We were at an angle from the shore so that we saw up Wall Street and Broadway looklng straight up both streets Broadway is the longest avenue in the world We saw the Squatters Village on the Brooklyn side with its many tar papei shacks the United Nations building on the Manhattan side Yankee Stadium Charity or Welfare Island and many other points of interest In all we passed under nine teen brldges' VVe had to wait for one rail road bridge to be raised for us On the left banking before this stop we saw the Col umb1a University Athletic Field There were many small parks along the shore on the Manhattan side These were crowd ed with people that day as it was quite warm We saw the new Franklin D Roose velt Highway runmng on top of the water Coming out lnto the Hudson River we headed back towards our dock which was Just below the dock where the Queen Elizabeth was On a high hill on the op posite side of Manhattan in New Jersey we could see the Ferris wheel in Palisades Park We wanted to go over there but never did find tlme We arrlved back at our pier at 5 30 a three hour tr1p MADELENE FAIRFIELD 02 STATUE OF LIBERTY On Tuesday morning we started for the Statue of Liberty by the subway which must have stopped at least a hundred times along the way Waiting for the ferry with us were 1 group of school children Among this group were a lot of l1ttle Negro children who were really very cute All of us had a wonderful trme watching them sing and dance We had an hour to spent at the statue before the ferry took us back Many of us bought little souvenirs and a few had their pictures taken with the statue as the background We were able to take an elevator up to the foot of the statue but had to walk the rest of the way The stairs were winding and very narrow After what seemed l1ke hours of climbing we arrived at the head of the statue As we looked down people and objects below looked very small At the end of the hour we returned to the ferry for the trip back EMPIRE STATE BUILDING After returmng from the Statue of Lib erty we went to the Empire State Building We took elevators up to the observatory 102 stories high From there we got a won derful view of New York City We were able to see such buildings at the Chrysler 30 1 ' .
