I ,I al 5 s : ' . . . . , ' - , . . . , . . . , I I . 7 7 THE RED AND BLACK L1terary 'IHE DAWN IS HERE By Beryl Nichols The dawn IS here At last the t1ny stars are fad1ng out one by one The horlzon IS br1ll1ant w1th expectatlon for a few lovely m1nutes then the sun peeps over and smlles on a dusky world pushes back the darkness and makes ready for a glorlous day Hours It seems have passed s1nce I last came out on the balcony to pray In realxty It has been only s1x hours SIX hours of wa1t1ng wa1t1ng for hfe or death SIX hours ago I had gone to the beds1de of my Wlfe who was near death The skles then were very black a storm was on 1ts way Just as I had finlshed my prayer It began to ram Agaln I went 1ns1de shut the wmdows and sat by her bedslde I couldn t l1e down to sleep as the fear of her sl1pp1ng away wh1le I was sleep1ng was constantly 1n my m1nd I sat 1n a b1g arm chalr and wrapped myself 1n a blanket The only no1ses were the howllng of the w1nd and the sloshlng of the ra1n agamst the French w1ndows At mornmg she would be better or worse xt was agony to s1t and watch the pendulum of the old grandfathers clock swmg back and forth t1ck1ng off the mm utes that meant l1fe or death for the glrl on the bed Suddenly way off as 1f 1n a dream I heard somethmg banglng It was sometlme before I came to my senses sufficlently to reahze that the wlnd had blown open the French wmdows I shut them and returned to her bed slde The mlracle had happened' She was breathlng normally now I had not reahzed before that It was almost dawn the dawn I had thought would never come was arrlvmg clear and falr The storm had stopped and the mormng would be glorlous God had answered my prayer I felt satlsfied that all would be well agam Agaln I came out onto the balcony where now I arn wa1t1ng for that dazzhng mormng sun to r1se en tlrely over the hor1zon and blot out ev ry sorrow and doubt of the nlght THE BAD LITTLE PIG By Leroy 9 Jackson When I was about five years old we had a l1ttle p1g Th1s httle p1g we kept w1th the cow 1n the barn Noth1ng happened for a wh1le he ate well and grew qulte a b1t When he was about four or five weeks old he stopped eatlng what we gave h1m to eat but kept rlght on grow1ng At the same t1me the cow stopped g1v1ng so much m1Ik Th1s cond1t1on ran along the same way for a week or two the p1g st1ll wouldnt eat and the cow wouldn t g1V6 so much mxlk Dad d1dn t know what was the matter wlth the p1g nor why the cow d1dnt g1V8 so much m1lk About a week later as Dad was golng away he got up early to do the m1lkmg He went out 1nto the barn guess what that l1ttle p1g was do1ng'7 Well that llttle p1g was just gett1ng h1S break fast he was standmg up agamst the cows h1nd leg and sucklng h1s own mllk for breakfast After that mornlng the png and cow were separated the loss of mllk and the never hungry p1g mystery were solved but the p1g 1f per mxtted st1ll would get h1S breakfast by hlmself I x - J , . a 1 ' x a ' ' v 9 1 s ' - , . , . LITERARY THE FLOWING OF THE BROOK By Maxlne Dutton The only sound that comes to my ear on a cool tranqu1l even1ng IS the steady splashlng and bubbl1ng of the l1ttle brook It lets 1tself pour onward down 1nto the heart of the forest It dashes madly onto the partly sub merged rocks The foamy whlte spray fl1es h1gh falls back and IS carr1ed on down the stream The water re fle ts the stars and becomes a pool of danc1ng d1amonds The moon just r1s1ng 1n the darkemng sky throws ltS golden glow across the rushmg waters On followlng th1s brook one f1nds that ltS course leads IDtO deep pools wh1ch overflow causmg r1vulets and l1ttle edd1es and f1nally los1ng 1tself 1n the Wlde expanse of the great r1ver HAIL BEATING ON THE ROOF By June Farmer I love to I e 1n bed and llsten to the hall beatmg on the roof It makes me feel lonesome yet very warm and secure It makes me apprec1ate mx warm bed and whole roof over mx head and th1nk of the people who a e less fortunate than I I th1nk of all the good th1ngs that have hap p ned to me as well as the bad wh1ch do not seem half so bad now Each t1ny pebble of ha1l seems to be commg dovvn just for me I th1nk there IS nothmg more fr1endly than ha1l beat1ng on the roof SECOND HONEYWIOON By Ann Qumnam Clark and Jan1ce Wmters were marr1ed before the war and enjoyed a short honeymoon before Clark sa1l ed away to f1ght for h1s country Wh1le he was away Jan1ce wrote every day and 1n letters they plan ned the house they would furn1sh when Clark came home to stay When he returned however the1r 1deal house remamed nothlng but a dream Instead of mov1ng 1nto the l1ttle cottage w1th the wh1te plCkEt fence and green shutters they had 1mag1ned they found that not even a two room apartment was avallable D1scouraged and bew1ldered at the h1gh cost of l1v1ng hous1ng shortage and general confus1on Clark dec1ded to take h1s Wlfe and go away for a wh1le B1ll Johnston Clarks budd1e durmg the war suggested a desolate spot 1n the northern part of MHIHS and takmg the bare necess1t1es of l1fe Clark and Janlce took B1l1s 3dV1C6 and rented a cab1n on Lake Embden The beauty of the lake at sundown when the water reflected all the del1cate t1nts that art1sts fa1l to match was a Slght too wonderful for descr1pt1on by words There 1n the st1llness of the woods they could forget the world all the problems It offered and enjoy the peace of the d1stant mountams and the w1lderness that surrounded them As there was very l1ttle work to be done 1n the1r temporary home the contented couple spent the1r t1me 1n sw1mm1ng rovmg f1sh1ng and gathermg w1ld flowers In the cvenlng as they sat on he veranda that oxerlooked the wate1 watch1ng the moon cast1ng shadovts upon the lake they could hear the b1rds 1n the trees and calls of the w1ld an1mals After a restful two weeks Mr and Mrs W1nters return ed to the no1se of the c1tv to receue a happy surpr1se awa1t1ng them B111 Johnston and h1s WlfE Ruth had remodeled the upper stoxx f the1r house 1nto an attractne apart ment for them to occupy untll thex could bu1ld a home of the1r own Jan1ces father had been forced to ret1re due to h1s poor health and slnce he had no son asked Clark to take over h1s buslness Because they felt that the1r cab1n had brought them good luck M and Mrs Wmters vowed to spend a second honeymoon every summer ln the1r l1ttle home by the lake . . . After Bill Here is my s1ster,hJanf' All gaspedl A GRAND QLD MAN A Grand Old Man Mr. Everett Jackson Smce 1939 Service To The School THE RED AND BLACK Activities WATTA WAZAAR On Frlday and Saturday December the third and the fourth the students and faculty of W1scasset Academy held a fair It was g1ven its pecul1ar name because the first two letters of each word WA stands for Wlscasset Academy What a fair th1S was' What a success' For over a month ln advance the boys and glrls sold t1CketS for selhng the most t1ckets Marilyn Jackson won a lovely Bulova wrlst watch The wlnner of the lucky t1cket to be drawn on Saturday n1ght was also to rece1ve a Bulova wrlst watch In addition were door pr1zes donated by the merchants of Wlscasset The Industrlal Arts classes worked hard by mak ng wooden toys b1rd houses shoe sh1n1ng boxes lawn chalrs and other useful artlcles to be sold The Home Econom1cs classes made aprons pocketbooks belts key cha1ns Chrlstmas cards and candy Mothers donated home cooked foods home canned vegetables and fruits For two nmhts Mrs Roy and a group of students made Chrlstmas wreaths to sell Then Mrs Roy and some g1rls spent many hours making fudge Now I shall try to describe the rooms ln the Amerlcan Legion Hall and the d1Fferent booths of the fair There was a booth where Christmas wreaths decorated Wlth evergreens were sold Next was the booth Where the electric tra1n was runn1ng At that booth t1ckets on the train were sold Then came the booth where door prizes were on d1splay In a large corner was the hot dog coca cola xce cream stand This was a busy corner too The Industrlal Arts d1splay came next and toys and artlcles sold well In the other corner was Santa Claus He had charge of the Grabs Many httle chlldren whlspered into his ear and told h1m what they wanted for Chrlstmas The next booth was the Home Economlcs w1th pretty and useful thlngs The home cooked food table came next and then the candy table At the other end of the room was a large covered home canned food booth In the center of the room was a large penny toss game Last but not least was the room of the World of Wonders Here was a real l1ve monkey 1n a cage guns of all k1nds antlques art1cles from forelgn countrles and cur1os1t1es too numerous to ment1on In th1s room were the trlmmed bxcycles and doll carrxages to be judged for prlzes They were so artlstlcally decorated w1th pretty colored crepe paper that It must have been very d1H'lcult for the Judges to make declsxons Now I th1nk that I have ment1oned all the lmportant parts of the fair Oh no' I must not forget the Yo Yo contest held on Friday n1ght Th1s was an exc1t1ng event F1rst the boys from the grammar school dld the1r best then a student of the academy tr1ed The wlnners competed for the honor of be1ng W1scasset s Champlon Yo Yo K1ng The boy from the grammar school won Was he clever' He could make that Yo Yo do anythmg Th1S was the first fa1r of the kmd glven ln W1scasset and Mr Roy says that next year s fa1r will be even better That IS sornethxng to look forward to beheve me' Watta Wazaar 1S the name and what a name lt ls' The money IS to be used for new basketball su1ts and other equlpment needed by W1scasset Academy J UDITH RINES 1 1 ! I I , . 2 , , . . , . - . y ,l . , y - 1 GL ' ' , - 11 ' Q . -y ' Q THE RED AND BLACK Ann Grover played the pxano wh1le Evelyn Cronk sang Ph1l1pp1no Baby Then R1chard Well1ngton and George Flanders had a contest to see who could drmk a bottle of m1lk more qulckly Arthur W1ll1s and Janet N1chols had a marshmallow on the strxng contest Then followed a ple eat1ng contest w1th Myron Gallup Barbara Petrxe Leonard Dunton and Arlene Ames a bubble gum contest won by Paul Melte another one w1th Johnny Fahey and Clarence Leavltt the last of all a worm eatmg contest MHCHYODI was used IH the place of worms The freshmen were very good sports and we know that they can hardly wa1t for next year to come when they as sophomores can 1n1t1ate the new freshmen MARY LOU DYER SENIOR SUPPER At the openlng of the school year a class meetmg of the senlors was held and tentat1ve plans were made for the forthcom1ng school year Among several toplcs of d1scuss1on was a supper The date of th1s supper was to be November 4 1948 The plannlng was left to the sen1or Home Economlcs glrls wlth the excellent help of Mrs Roy Cards askmg for donatlons of food such as chlckens potatoes onlons and ples were sent to townspeople A wonderful and unexpected response arose from th1s act1on so that all the food was collected and brought to the Home Econom1cs Department All day Thursday fthe day of the supperj was devoted to the preparatxon of the Congregat1onal Vestry and to the cookmg of the food The tables were well arranged and all the food that was cooked Mr Roy brought to the vestry 1n the Jeep At the t1me ot the supper all the statlons were manned Ted Sherman at the potato Bucket I myself dlshlng out the omons and Mrs Roy servlng the ch1cken and gravy Mrs Wakefield poured the coffee and all the sen1or g1rls served The supper turned out to be very successful even though when half way through we had to cut the servmgs conslderably The success of the ch1cken supper was greatly due to the wonderful help from our frlends the townspeople and the swell supervlslon of Mrs Roy GORDON PETRIE REDSKINS GO T0 TOURNEY On Wednesday February 24 1949 W1scasset Academys basketball team journeyed to Lew1ston to part1c1pate 1n the Small School Basketball Tourney The teams chosen are regarded as the elght best QSJ school teams 1n Western Mame W1SCaSS8t played the boys of Lxmmgton Academy who were the Central York County Champs W1SCaSS6t took an early lead wh1ch kept mcreaslng as the game went on The final result W1SCaSSet 55 Lxmlng ton 37 Because lt won th1s game W1SC3SSet met Kmgfleld H S on Frlday afternoon Thrs game started out and ended ln a d1ng dong battle K1ng field had a terrlfic helght advantage and finally downed the Redskms 52 42 Wh1le playmg 1n th1s tourney the W1SCaSS6t team won the respect of all by thelr clean playlng fine sportsmanshlp and fightlng Splrlt Mr Roy Chalrman of the Tournament Cornmlttee mtroduced the players to many of h1S fr1ends of whom the W1scasset boys had heard much The players also met boys from other schools newspapermen photo . . L i Q l .lf my I V , , 1 , . - A THE RED AND BLACK INDUSTRIAL ARTS Left to rlght Ierald Dalton Instructor Leland Brown Theodore Sherman Clvde Dow Richard Qoule Things have been humming in the shop th1s year Shortly after school opened last fall the sophomore and Junior shop boys went into high gear turning out projects for the fair Toy trucks tractors steam engines kiddie blocks shoe shine boxes and lawn chairs were only a few of the items made on a mass production basis Juniors started on a diversified program consisting of arc welding forge work wood lathe and machine woodwork This program has developed successfully and an excellent foundation has been laid for more advanced work 1n these fields The freshman boys did a fine 1ob in mechanical drawing and have con tmued the good work through hand woodworking The sophomore and Junior boys have carried on a unique project this year We know of no other Industrial Arts Shop doing this type of work Durlng the year sixteen boys have turned out stamped varnlshed and ready for use fifty baseball bats Each member of the baseball squad Wlll start the season with at least two of his favorite models Six selected models in assorted sizes have been presented to the veterans home at Togus Due to lack of seasoned wood we were unable to fill many orders re ceived from other schools However we have about one hundred white ash billets seasoning and hope to till orders next vear LELAND A BROWN . .
