One may decide to steal her roommate's boyfriend or another may leave food to mold on her roommates dresser. These freshmen often end up saying as few words as possible to each other, usually only words such as Don't tell me what to do or I did not . These incidents are just exceptions, thank goodness, to the ordinary cases of finding at the end of a hard year of studying or playing cards that saying goodbye in May might get a little teary. Most freshmen, and even rugged juniors and seniors. discover that being room- mates was worth going through all the trials and tribulations of living together. Betsy Garber Freshman

Y be ut' Rst To Bs... Ywsmmates One of the hardest experiences college fresh- men ha-ve to face ls the trial of living for a . whole school year with glrls who they may never have seen or even with girls they have known all their lives. Many may not know what their roommates' dislikes and llkes may be while some may even know how many pairs of shoes their roommates have. The first week most roommates are unbelievably sweet to each other. For example, one girl may go out of her way to make sure she does not play the stereo, which the other despises while she is studying. ln turn, the other may remember not to leave her side of the room in a mess, which her roommate detests. Roommates, being new freshmen, cling to each other during the process of learning where English 101 is or what the shortest way is to get from the dorm to the cafeteria. As the year progresses, some may gradually get on each others nerves and not longer tolerate each other's habits, while others may learn to get along with their roomies and even begin to care when they have the blahs or when that long awaited letter finally arrives.

l guess everyone has their favorite times at Winthrop whether they be certain incidents, certain days, certain hours. I guess my favorite hours at Winthrop are in the late afternoon-spring or fall-no special reason. There is a special flavor that is captured during the quiet of that time of the afternoon -it's a certain peacefulness, yet, the potential to find what you want, like an individual reach- ing to find part of himself. Winthrop is what you make it-that's the only way I see it. I truly believe that you can make yourself satisfied anywhere. But, you have to work and believe-believing in Winthrop is what l guess I do-actually becoming a part of it. There's nothing that says that loving a place doesn't stop you from wanting to make changes to make it better. Yet, I feel it's important to allow a place to be as an individual, gas a person. i it'S like a quiet afternoon - you are a great part of that around you. .. ll H N 1 W I 1 :J .ff E i A' Q Blk.-n-anim. ,. , fra,
