! am a Winthrop student, but most of all | am a person, me, whose principal com- ponent is not the role of a student. For the time being, the assumption of this role is of primary importance, at times over- shadowing those more deeply submerged beneath that facade of being just another Social Security number. For four years, | have buried the other roles in the necessity of accomplishing this task before me. However, there is more than this: | surface for a game of pool or hours of bridge, for participation in long-established Winthrop customs and traditions as well as various organizations, conscious always of the desire to be more than a number, an indi- vidual in my own right.

To be free to get away with friends or a date and just go away from the rat race. It doesn’t matter where . . . just to get away from that test at 8:00 in the morning on as yet unread material, from the speech and 200 other pages, all due tomorrow ... just to forget it all, even if only for a little while.
