Winthrop . . . how did it come to be? What is it now? Where is it going? . Winthrop College had its beginning In the pur- poseful action of many South Carolinians see mg to provide an education for the young women of the state. lts actual founding was brought about in 1886 by Dr. David Bancroft .lohnson who se- cured the necessary financial support from' the Peabody Fund to establish and operate a tramlng school for teachers. Winthrop, named for the Honorable Robert C. Winthrop, the President of the Board of Trustees for the Peabody Fund, was first located in the small Chapel of the Columbia Theological Semi- nary. That Chapel is now a part of the Winthrop campus. In 1891 the College became a state-sup orted school, and in 1895 it was moved from Coliimbia to its present site in Roclr Hill under the name of Winthrop Normal and Industrial College of South Carolina. The name was later changed to the pres- ent title of Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women. . At present, Winthrop covers eighty-eight acres of campus, part of a total of four hundred and forty-four acres owned b the College. The physi- cal plant, valued at eighteen million dollars, in- cludes twenty-six buildings surrounded by land- scaped areas and recreational facilities. The student body of twenty-six hundred will continue to increase each year: thus plans are be- ing made and carried out to meet the growing needs of the College and of the students. Follow- ing the construction of a combined dormitory and dining hall and a new heating plant, which have been completed this year, future expansion will provide a student union building, a more ad- equate library, and additional dormitory space. ' Winthrop has grown from a very small teacher- training program to a rapidly growing liberal arts college with modern facilities. It has progressed from a mutual hope to a shared reality. Winthrop . . . the fulfillment of a dream, and the lreeper of a vision. I :v 1 -, -. fig? 'A 1 f If f' A' i n ' . ' ff' -.-1' 3 Y'-3-.A-I?i'i'-?:11i'i'r'-' - ' V . , .- ' V . .' : 'A 1 'Uri 3, .
