THRU THE YEAR oes In 1886 a small brick carriage house was the home of Winthrop College. Now, fifty years later, this one building has grown to be one of the educational centers of the South already we have had a splendid growth, and we are ready for even greater expansion. Dr. Davin Bancrorr JOHNSON, our farsighted founder . . . Dr. JAMES PINCKNEY Kinarb, our President Emeritus . . . Dr. SHELTON PHELPs, our President . . . each has had his share in the wise direction of Winthrop’s development in buildings and reassuringly increasing enrollment . . . and in those far more important attainments of honesty, tradi- tion, and democratic spirit. = With the completion of the new and beautiful Senior dormitory the campus will be with- out need of any one thing. Everywhere the eye may turn, it will be charmed by buildings hum- ming with activity; gracious Kinard Hall, the five freshman and upperclassman dormitories, Tillman Hall, home of the sciences and labs, our massive and impressive auditorium and mu- sic conservatory, active Peabody gymnasium, Carnegie library, the simple classic columns of Johnson Hall, all seemingly joined together around a center, stately Main . . . quiet in dig- nity, surrounded by the old as well as new, all in thorough harmony.
