rT ORE WORE IN JUNE we shall be graduated, and what of all our dreams and hopes and fears? Will we go out singing a song of joyous youth, or will ours be a low and mournful chant, fearful of the ravages and the deso- lation of the years to come? Soon our college life will be only a thing of the past, a memory, but still a realization. In this volume of THE JATLER, we, the staff, have earnestly sought to reveal the interests and the achievements which have been yours. Our ambition was boundless, for we have hoped and even prayed to make of this book a mirror in which to catch and hold a faint yet glamorous reflection of your college days. We hope that in the years to come this volume of THE TATLER will refresh and renew your memories, for ‘God has given us memories so that we might have roses in January.’ May you then remember the laughter, tears, the hopes, and the years of your youth.

THEME As A fitting theme for THE 1933 TATLER, I have chosen Books, for they have indeed been a part of our life at Winthrop College. Books stir ambition; they forge the keys that unlock the doors to oppor- tunity; they stimulate our ideals; they have been the source of inspiration and an aid to aspiration. In Books we have the wisdom, the humor, the thoughts and dreams, and the culture of the best minds at their best. Books are more than Books—they are the heart and life of ages past-—they are a legacy delivered down through generations to those yet unborn. As Christopher Morley once said, ‘‘Love and friendship and humor and ships at sea by night— x there’s all heaven and earth in a real book... .’ I earnestly hope that because of its theme this volume of THE TATLER will mean much to you. THE EDITOR.
