Feb. § March April May § We arrived and got collegiate; Were ratted and high-hatted. Got disillusioned. Got acclimatized and diet-ized, Satirized and sub-sidized. Learned to turn the other cheek. Attempted to play hockey off the other fellow’s ankles. Christmas Holidays—no Santa Claus even for Freshmen. Quarantine and MACARONI. The first robin—AND SPRING HOLIDAYS. Preparation for summer vacation. 1929-1930— September covered our VERDANCY with a “Sophomorish’’ exterior, and buried us beneath the usual Sophomore curriculum. Rest of year a repetition of ’28 and ’29. Produced the play “‘Her Husband’s Wife.’’ 1930-1931— We came and tripped it as we went With our thirst for knowledge bent— “Friend Hannah’’—-successful class play. In March, produced the Junior Follies-—result of the culmination of the foolishly wise Sovhs and wisely. foolish Juniors. May—Junior-Senior, the first of its kind in which the opposite sex were honored by invitations. Cups for tennis singles, archery, and track placed among our trophies. 1931-1932— And though the race was o’er half done— We saved our strength; and by it won That long last league. Nov. March April May Won the hockey cup. Also the basketball cup. Applications. No vacancies. Daisy Chain. Graduation. And were I a prophet, I would write the aftermath; but as it is, I make hrevity the soul of necessity. Page One Hundred Twenty-six Funior Class History Intelligence tests... orientation... green bows... and a class ceased to be “lowly worms” and sang, for the first time, “Let Us Stand Side by Side, Freshman Class!’’ They did. Through a year of English and earth-worms, of Art and Analytics, and of French and frogs, they stood ‘‘side by side’’ to roll up an enviable record. Their Sophomore year found them back at Winthrop, hale, hearty, and hard-boiled to Freshmen. Soon, however, they dropped this mantle, and threw themselves whole-heartedly into a variety of things. Nor was their diligence unrewarded. By the end of the year they had demonstrated once more their versatility. “hey had successfully produced a fine comedy, “Come Out of the Kitchen’; they had delightfully entertained their Senior Sisters on the good ship ‘Sophomore’; they had pulled through the mazes of History and Chemistry to acquire a long “‘distinguished’”’ list; and they had proven their ability on the athletic field by accumulating nine W’s. But such a record, brilliant as it was, did not completely satisfy them. This year, as Juniors, they have even increased the number of their accomplishments. Having found and entertained their Fresh- man Sisters, they began the year with the loud and emphatic bang of the brilliant play, ‘““The Swan.’ ‘Their spirits thus aroused, they rollicked through Pep Meeting—-where even the kitchen force sup- ported them!—to a hockey season where their splendid team made a fine showing. Next they selected, after wise deliberation, class rings; and families were bored for the next month by their ecstatic descriptions. First semester had ended when the climax of their Junior year appeared. Ihe Junior Follies showed the Juniors at their best. De- lightfulness, originality, individuality—all of these the Follies pos- sessed; but above all they were jolly, as jolly as the class that pro- duced them. Now the end of this, their Junior year, is here. ‘heir achieve- ments so far have been extraordinary; but the greatest of them are yet to be. Page One Hundred Twenty-seven Funtor Class Song Let us stand side by side, Junior Class; Let us fight to the end of the game; Honor right, colors bright, Junior Class, And our spirits our only fame. Sophomore Class History “As the Sophomores go singing along,’ you would never think that as late as September, 1930, they were raw recruits in the Winthrop army, eager young Freshmen, ‘“‘tender and green in their salad-days.’’ We passed through the routine drill of Freshman year—Orientation, Rat Week, first exams, pre- ceded by Sophomoric scare-’em-up-tales—and through the red-letter thrills, which include the pep meeting, the hockey and basketball games, Junior Follies, and “‘going-home-in-May.”’ We emerged no longer ‘‘rookies’’ but a united army, and even the chimes seemed to ring out “‘the Sophomore Class.’’ No one will deny we have well acquitted our duties as Sophs—least of all the frosh! Beginning with “The New Poor,” styled one of Winthrop’s best productions, we have firmly estab- lished a “‘smashing’’ good record (a term that is suitable for us either on the athletic field or in the chemistry lab). We're in regular formation now, and in great form. ‘It’s ever onward, our course pursuing.’ The first two battles of our campaign have been fought; and toward the ultimate victory we are marching with supreme confidence: “Over hill, over dale, you can hear the glad refrain, As the Sophomores go marching along.”’ Page One Hundred Thirty-seven Sophomore Class Song As we go marching And the band begins to p-l-a-y, You can hear us shouting, “Sophomore Class ts on the way!” Oski-wow-wow! Page One Hundred Forty-six History of the Freshman Class When 512 girls from each bump of South Carolina—and even from New Jersey, Washington, D. C., and Florida—are gathered together, things are bound to happen. History couldn’t repeat itself with such a crowd of bright individuals codperating mouth, hand, and heart. That first day stands out in our memories—what subdeb could forget such a date as that? On Friday, September 4, 1931, bag, baggage and lunch- boxes arrived followed slowly (or joyously, such as the types may have been) by the ‘‘little ones’’ who had breasted hard times in search of the priceless gift, knowledge. How eagerly we toured the campus, met the authorities, went to meals! How new and strange and mystifying it was! ‘The parties that were given for us made us feel like we were really a very important class and that the College had been holding its breath until we came along. Imagine our fall to earth again when the sophisticated Sophs breezed in. Ratting lasted only two days but talent that had been buried since birth was rooted out by our bloodthirsty persecutors. When the bell sounded that brought our initiation to a close at 10:20 o'clock on Friday night, Sophomore and Freshman, exhausted fell on each other’s neck, the best of friends. Tradition was broken by the splendid codperation with Dr. Allen in the physical examinations. Never before has every student enrolled in the Fresh- man class been examined. This good health is probably one of the reasons why so many of our class have turned out for athletics. Sportswomen? ‘They can’t be beat. Good winners, good losers. In their brilliant hockey tunics of gray touched with garnet, the eleven smashed through to victory over the Sophs—revenge attained —while their loyal supporters waved the class blanket and urged them on. Three Freshmen made varsity hockey team. One Freshman got a block in swimming. We feel like roosters! We certainly are boosters of our class. Basketball season brought its fun and work—-what with fine teamwork and good class codperation, the scalp of the Juniors was added to our belt of victories. The Freshmen are adventurous; they've entered into everything—dra- matics, debates, the very spirit of the college. The first lap of our college career is over; experience has taught us many things. The Garnet and Gray shall wave proudly over the deeds of the Class Oiir Se Page One Hundred Forty-seven Freshman Class Song Nineteen hundred and thirty-one, The class of Garnet and Grey, Side by side with thirty-three We'll fight to win the day. Sometime in the near fu ture You will hear them say, “With plenty of pep, they've won The ‘rep’ of the Freshman class.” Freshmen, Freshmen! The class will back the cry. We're here to do or die. Freshmen, Freshmen! We'll win the game Or know the reason why. weg rer) neg AL Nght ee at oe ahd fy ’ oot, Fg, ity l VIRGINIA SMITH I °Versat Talent BEULAH WINGARD ‘Popularity FRANCES SALLEY ‘Dependability VIRGINIA HAILE ost cAttractive M ES CLARK FRANC ‘duality LUI Ind R 3 MILLE MARIE Cficiency GEORGIE DERRICK Wit CATHERINE WALKER Athletic Ability JULIA BROWN Ghararters from Ganterinry Gales EMILY HODGES Forthwith the Merchant told of May who married January. From then on, the number increased until in 1927 there were thirty clubs on the campus, each an individual organization with no formal relationship among the whole group. Representatives from the seven oldest clubs formed a Pan-Hellenic Council. However, this was of very little importance, and was soon replaced in 1927 by the Federation of Social Clubs. Under this new social regime, a Standards Committee was formed. This was composed of representatives of clubs which fulfilled such requirements set up by the Federation as to age, scholarship, and purpose. This committee had the power of-regulating club life on the campus. However, as the clubs increased in number, The Standards proved inade- quate as an instrument of regulation, and a new body took its place. This was an Executive Council made of twelve members of the Standards Clubs. This council has control of all legislation pertaining to club life. So far it has proved very effective.
