Words are things, and a small drop of ink, Falling like dew, upon a thought, produces That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think; T1s strange, the shortest letter which man uses Instead of speech, may form a lasting link Of ages.” So sang England’s poet, self-exiled, and history has proved the truth of his song. Thoughts, letters, words, ink—-with such simple material has history recorded the work of Francis Marion and his brigade. Of such material have we made THE TATLER of 1930, with the hope that each ‘‘shortest letter’ will be eloquent, to all who read, of the lights and shadows, the work and play, the ideals and achievements of our life at Winthrop. DAVID BANCROFT JOHNSON Our Beloved “‘Debe”’ January 10, 1856—December 26, 1928 Page Thirty stale: ua AO AO AOVIg ONILSAY Buell Page Thirty-one ys A Short History of Winthrop “An institution is the lengthened shadow of one man.’’—-EMERSON Dr. David Bancroft Johnson, when he was in 1886 superintendent of the City System of Schools in Columbia, felt the need of trained teachers for the schools in that city. From this desire sprang the vision of a training school for teachers throughout the State, and later of a great state college for women. ‘This vision has become a realization in the Greater Winthrop of today, the Winthrop College of nation-wide reputation and of nation-wide influence. With indomitable courage and fixed determination he set about his task. He went im- mediately to Boston, Massachusetts, and there gained the confidence of Mr. Robert E. Winthrop, Chairman of the Peabody Educational Board. Under the will of the philanthropist, Mr. George Peabody, a fund had been established for the aid of education in the South. Winthrop became so much interested in the plans of the enthusiastic young southern school superintendent that he gave him an appropriation of fifteen hundred dollars with which to further his desires. This fund was paid as salary to Miss Mary H. Leonard, as principal of the school which was to grow into Winthrop College, the first teachers’ college in the South Atlantic States. Later members of the faculty were Mrs. T. C. Robertson and Miss Annie E. Bonham. The school with one teacher and nineteen students was formally opened November 15, 1886, in a small brick building used as the chapel of the Columbia Theological Seminary. After several years the school was moved to a more convenient building on Marion Street and the training courses were lengthened from one to two years. Not yet, though, had the vision been realized. “The dream was for a state college for women. Invoking the hearty codperation of Governor Tillman, who strongly advocated normal and industrial work for women, in 1891 President Johnson got a bill passed in the Legislature for the establishment of a woman’s college. This bill was passed and signed by Governor Tillman just before twelve o'clock on the last night of the session of the General Assembly for that year. Offers of a site and contributions in money were made by many cities of the state. The offer made by Rock Hill seemed the most advantageous, and therefore the Board of Trustees selected the present location of the college. The cornerstone of the Main Building, in which the administrative offices are now placed, was laid in 1894. Immediately also, there was erected the first dormitory, North. In addition to this there have been erected up to the present five others. The College now employs more than one hundred and fifty teachers and officers, and the plant embraces seventeen major buildings, and also a productive farm of two hundred and sixty acres. On this farm there is a herd of one hundred and twenty-five cows and many acres of gardens which help to supply the table for the students’ dining room. For the work of con- struction here, Dr. Johnson, through his personal effort, received handsome donations from John D. Rockefeller, J. Pierpont Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and others. The college plant is now valued at more than three and a quarter million dollars. Dr. Johnson, founder and for forty-two years President of Winthrop College, died at his home at Winthrop on Wednesday, December 26, 1928. He lies buried on the campus within the shadow of the walls he loved so well, and in a spot where Winthrop daughters pass each day and bow their heads in silent gratitude in memory of him who gave his life for them. Though President Johnson is dead, his spirit still lives. The college that he founded and nurtured still goes on under President James P. Kinard, who was closely associated with him for thirty years. Under the new executive, Winthrop still continues to grow and to serve the people of our state. Page Thirty-two WV SN Ay, Page Thirty-five re ye Senior Class Poem Now that the victor’s crown 1s ours, And our first goal ts won, We stand just at the door of life— Our work 1s but begun. Wisdom’s portals are opened wide For those who thirst for learning, And those who have within their hearts Ambition’s fires burning. Let us look to higher things And strive always to be, Symbolical of what ts best, In trath and loyalty. The noble ideals Winthrop holds Inspire us to keep Her tmage graven tn our hearts, As to the top we leap. As each steps out, success should be Determined in her heart. Life’s road to us should not be hard As at Winthrop’s gates we part. —B. S. Our road leads onward to the hills, and creeps Into the mist; then clambers up, and sweeps The summit. O’er the way there lies a higher hill That echoes with the hearty challenge, ‘‘Hail!”’ Of victors seeking greater heights to scale. Accept the challenge? Shall tt go unmarked? Already those who flung tt wave farewell, Move on, and seek a higher place to dwell. “Hail! Wordsworth I wandered hungry as a cow Who ambles on o’er vale and hill When all at once I heard a row, A blare of whistles from the mill; It rent our ears, it shook the trees, Growing louder with the breeze. Continuous was the Winthrop line ‘That wandered up and down the way, They stretched in never-ending line About the campus every day; Two thousand saw I at a glance, Walking and running from South and Nance. The bell began to toll, but they Outdid the clanging bell with glee— One could not slow down or delay In such a rushing company; I pushed and shoved but little thought Of the meal that soon to me was brought. For soon when to the door I pry I look in a disgusted mood From that which flashed upon my eye, And then—lI longed for solitude; I heard the girls around me say “Soup and apples again today!” —B. S.
