SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS P1 szdent Vzcz' P1 z :zdent S cc: 4 tary Marshal Tr mmrcf SENIOR CLASS HISTORY -ill the day: uf: zz bee I1 Zogclhw Fondlg uc :wall The years of our school life haxe come to a close, but xxe shall retain many fond memories, for our class has set precedents, partaken in numerous enjoyable functions and has established an enxlable record in social and scholastic actixities Our first undertaking as Sophomores was the election of class officers On February 5 the social commlttee Kex, Gar, Laurette, Ernie, Mary and Leon and the class oflicers Bud Bno, Ruthie, and Putt, under the capable superxislon of Miss Barbara F Knight, our class treas urer, held the snapplest dance of the year, the Sophomore Semi formal Social We set a precedent by introducing the noxelty spot dance at the social Later on the students shoxxed their class spirit when they enthuslastically pur We sailed into our Iunior year with much success On the ex emng of February 14 Bud Ruthie, Putt, Eddie, and Mr Robert Perry our class officers, along vxtth Natalie, Daxx n Frank, hrnie B no and Lennie, our social com mittee conducted another successful social We intro duced the use of microphones at our Iunlor Dance, and h id many entertainers at intermission Sorroxx marked the lltter part of the year, for on Max I5 1938 our good teacher and friend, Mr Eber I Wells passed axx ay Our Senior xear xx as most ex entful, filled xxlth both yoy ind sorroxx Our football, basketball, baseball and track teams enjoyed xerv successful seasons, bringing home to Winthrop High many xictorles On October I5 I938, the entire school was grnexed to learn of the death of our beloxed friend and superintend ent of schools Mr lidxxard R Clarke Hts death xxas a great bloxx to all for his nexer ceasing interest in our school and class vsas so outstanding On December 2 our officers and social committee, under the direction of Mr. Harold B. Morse, class treasurer, held an informal social in the gym. Unique decorations and fa- xors helped to make the exemng a successful one Also in December, the Senior Play Huckleberry Finn nearly broke all attendance records in Osborne Hall By this time the Senior Echo Board xx as ln full svxing and xxorkmg earnestly and faithfully on both the bi xx eekly and the yearbook The Senior Gift Committee Polly Billv and Frankj selected a most appropriate class gift, a picture of Mr Edward R Clarke In fact two pictures of Mr Clarke xxere presented, one to be hung in the Fdxxard R Clarke Auditorium, and the other to be hung ln Osborne Hall Instead of the annual operetta, in March three one act plays xxere gtxen one by each class The Seniors pre sented The Eligible Mr Hangs with Bud Sennett, Bir bara Tartan Lennie Reno, and Bette Gould The Seniors xxon the best performance prwe of fixe dollars each ex emng On April Il 1939 Mr Arthur E Boudrtau, present superintendent of schools introduced us to our new prm but tvxo months assocrmon with Mr Thayer Mrs lbelle Cllrke our permanent librarian, assumed her duties in the nexvly renoxited hbrtrv, shortly after the sprung xacation The innual Seml formal Senior Flrexx ell Social on May I2 xx as the socnal exent of the year Its outstanding features helped make the exemng a memorable one Later in the spring, the Senior Dress Committee chose the traditional vxhlte suits for both boys and girls The Class Day Committee brought our school days nearer to their climax, by conducting us through an ex cellent Class Day program on Iune I3 On Iune I5 our Crtduatlon Exercises were held at Miller Field and thus the Class of l939 passed out of the ranks of students and into the field of the alumni We haxe ended our school vears but xve haxe many, many fond memories to take xxith us, xear after year Wmthlop Hzgh School Winthrop High School Tcndu fan and truc- Loyal :ons and grateful l1lIllgl7ft'l'.x' All their vows renew.
