BOOKS A SYMBOL OF OUR KNOWLEDGE THE SEARCHLIGHT 2 1958 PUBLISHED BY THE ANNUAL STAFF OF WINTERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Winterville, North Carolina 3 FOREWORD This, the 1958 SEARCHLIGHT, is a partial record of the 1957- 1958 school year at Winter- ville High School. We, the Staff, hope that this book will serve to remind you of thes e days whenever you might leaf through the following pages. CONTENTS Classes Activities Athletics Advertisements OUR SEARCH FOR 4 1 .■ -JSP 1 ' ■ ' [ 1 1 ! 1 KNOWLEDGE. ..IS A SEARCH FOR SUCCESS 5 DEDICATION WTien one hears the word teacher, one thinks of a classroom and a blackboard. A per son never thinks of his mother or father as a teacher, however. Though mothers and f a th e r s never seem to be considered teachers, they are actually the most important teachers one ever has. They teach their children the first things they ever learn and the things about which life is based. We learn practical things from our parents more than from any other source. Parents are indeed teachers; so are our friends and fellow students. It is to teachers in this sense of the word that we gratefully dedicate this, the 1958 Searchlight. 6 THE AUTHORS Annual Staff Jimmie Runkle Willie Jean McLawhorn George Jackson Joyce Jackson Wilton McLawhorn . . . During the following seven years, words were added and eliminated under the supervision of the following grammar grade teachers: Miss Corwin, Miss Williams, Mrs. Crawford, Miss Dunn, Miss Brown, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Savage, Miss Bryan, Mrs. Nobles, Mrs. Greggor, Mrs. Dail, Miss Whitford, and Mrs. Evans. Additional words arrived from Bell Arthur during the eighth year. Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Moye were now in charge of rearranging these words so that they would be ready to enter high school. ' The transformation of words into sentences took place during the ninth year under the direction and the guidance of Miss Brown and Mrs. Collins. These teachers were instrumental in forming the words into topic sentences. Participation in many outside activities, which included membership on the annual staff and in the glee club, the band, F.H.A. , and F.F.A., served to develop these topic sentences into full-fledged paragraphs. New paragraphs were written during the tenth year. Those concern- ing participation in the Junior-Senior banquet as waiters and waitres ses , the Beta Club, and paper staff were beginning to be formed. This was done under the capable leadership of Mrs. Flannagan, who was sponsor for our group this year. At the end of this school year, these completed paragraphs were ready to be transferred to the eleventh grade. Mrs. Jackson, the eleventh-grade sponsor, was responsible for ar- ranging the material into pages.’ This was done by reworking the para- graphs handed to her and by making additions to the content. The maga- zine drive, Junior-Senior banquet, the arrival of class rings, and a visit to East Carolina College on Junior day completed the pages of our book. These pages were then sent to Mrs. Mallison, the senior class spon- sor. New pages concerning the senior play, the s election of caps and gowns, the choosing of a speaker for the Baccalaureate sermon, and the selection of a class flower, class colors, and mascots completed our printed material. Slowly and carefully these pages were assembled into chapters telling the story of the class of 1958. Graduation night in May 1958 completed the final chapter of the De - velopment of a Book. It was now ready to be forwarded to our publisher so that a history of our class would be preserved for posterity. Sandra Hunsucker Historian 12 SENIOR OFFICERS Van Jackson . . Ralph Wingate . As I thumb- ed through the daily paper, I found myself to be unusually interested in the editorial section. There I noticed a review of one of the new collective biographies which had just been re- leased from the press. How sur- prised I was to find that this newly published book contained sketches of all my classmates in the Senior Clas s of 1958 ! I ate my breadfasthurriedly and rushed to Harvey ' s Bookstore fora copy of this book, which I could- not resist buying. I was informed that all copies had been sold and that I would have to place my name on the waiting list. The next two weeks passed slow- ly. Just as I had given up hope of getting the book, Mr. Harvey called me and told me that the new supply had just arrived. Ihurried to the store with a feeling of great antici- pation. Upon returning home, I im- mediately settled down and began to read this treasured book. As I read the pages, familiar names appeared. These brought back memories of my graduating class.
