CLASS TREE (History) In 1945 sixty-five seedlings arrivedat Winter ville elementary school for planting, to become the forest of 1957. During the elementary years, the seedlings were carefully watered, pruned, and cultivated. After seven years of care, the seedlings had transformed into small trees with sturdy trunks and branches. During the eighth year these little trees became healthier and lovelier. Also several new ones were brought from Bell Arthur, increasing the size of our forest. After the eighth year, the trees were transplanted and came into the care of Miss BrownandMrs. Collins. The next year, Mrs. Flanagan was mainly responsible for the development of the trees. Then Mrs. Jackson took them into her care, and the last year, the responsibility of caretaker rested upon the shoulders of Mrs. Mallison. These capable caretakers s ' III ' S- I .pi r tj helped to adapt these trees to the elements which were necessary for better growth. They were mainly concerned with the overall development of the trees into finer and more beautiful ones. During each year of high school, highlights which contributed to the i « v H i vm growth of lateral branches and beautiful foliage occurred. Positions on the school paper staff, annual staff, and basketball team, participation in Glee Club, F.H.A. , and F.F.A. showed a marked improvement in the development of the trees during the ninth year. In the tenth year. Beta Club and cheerleaders added healthy leaves. The Junior -Senior Ban- quet, a magazine campaign and Junior Day at East Carolina College made the branches sturdier and the foliage lovelier. During the twelfth year, the Senior Play, the selection of invitations, measurements for caps ; : j |f - andgowns, selection of speakers and choosing superlatives completed the growth. With the graduation exercises the forest of 1957 was ready to take its place in the w ' orld. Historian Patricia Hoyle
