Class Kkapsody (History) Perhaps you have never thought about comparing the history of a class with the de- velopment of a musical composition. This is what I have done here. In 1944 a jumbled number of notes reported to the first grades of Winterville School. Little did these notes realize what was in store for them. For eight years they would be rearranged and transposed by first one director and then another. When one director did all that was possible on the melody of education, she passed the notes on to the next one. After the primary and grammar school directors had composed the melody, the score was handed over to Mrs. Collins and Miss Brown. These capable musicians were the home room directors of the freshman class. They successfully added the accompaniment, sixteen students from Bell Arthur, which made the melody lovelier. Next the score was passed to Mrs. Flanagan. Her task was to adapt the melody for the various instruments of the orchestra - -the occupation of life. This was not easy for each instrument had a different part to play. Some instruments carried the melody, and so were leaders, yet the less important ones were vital to the melody and could not be overlooked. The orchestra leader, Mrs. Jackson, was the next person to see the score. It was her duty to direct the orchestra members. These juniors worked hard striving for per- fection. However, there were several welcome breaks. The first one was selecting the class rings and upon their arrival displaying the lovely ruby stones. Second was the junior-senior banquet, “Kingdom Under the Sea.” Again rehearsals were resumed- the concert was drawing near. Finally the night arrived. Mrs. Mallison.who was in charge of the concert, welcomed us now seniors. The music started; the musicians concentrated on the score. As the tempo increased, so did knowledge. The highlights of the melody--the senior play, high school day at E. C. C., and the junior-senior banquet- -will often be hummed through the years. The fifteen bass instruments and the sixteen treble instruments harmonized as the tempo increased. The concert was drawing to a close. The last chords rang loud and clear . . . final exams . . . baccalaureate sermon . . . graduation. As the last chord died away the notes rejoiced for each had given a vital part to the composition. The notes in their activities of going to school, studying and partying composed the melody and yet the hidden tone--education--could only be seen through hi-fidelity living. With the prelude (work), interlude (fun), postlude (graduation), each note was confident that it was going forth into the world to join new notes in the formation of other compositions.
