HI STORY M 'f all .U 'J . With our aims high, our ambitions great, and our backs to junior high s class of '57 crossed the threshold to higher knowledge--HIGH SCHOOL. Now, as then, our motto as the ships of the future sail on, they leave ripples of the past, has held true, for from our ranks havecome many outstanding students, athletes and school leaders. In '53, we entered W. H. S. as crazy mixed up freshmen, and some of us have been losing gouund ever since. Out on the gridiron , the freshmen boys really got in there and worked. Two boys earned minor letters, and Neal Day earned a major letter his first year out. There were fifteen freshmen bandmembers, who helped the band perform at the halftime When they weren't playing, they were helping the pep club cheer for the team. When the basketball season rolled around, there was active participation by both the freshman boys and girls. Ann Boyd earned a major letter her first year on the squad. In the spring of '54, the freshman boys were out on the cinder track trying to keep up with the big, fast, upperclassmen. Four of the freshmen boys did and earned letters The fall of 'Sh found l.l2 of us back as sophomores. Our number was slowly diminish- ing, but we could add another notch to our gun. In extra-curricular activities the soph- omore class outdid itself. In football two boys earned major letters and three earned min- or letters. .Ln basketball nine earned freshmen-sophomore letters, and one boy ea.rned a minor letter. In girls' basketball we had one major letter winner and two minor letter winners. Track was very successful this year, with eight freshmen boys awarded letters. Though we were active in other activities, we still kept up a high scholastic average. 1955 is a year we will all long remember, we were at last jolly juniors, and upper- classmen. Our ship to the future, left quite a few ripples of the past this year, mostly as wrinkles and gray hairs on the teachers of W.H.S. In football seven boys from our class earned major letters and four earned minors , for a very successful football season. The squad had some rough competition this year, and most of the boys showed it, with bumps and bruises. The Junior Glass Play was 'Shy Guy' with Merle Mercer having the lead role. Eleven juniors had speaking parts and numerous others were on the stage crew. In basketball, one boy earned a major letter, and four girls earned major W's. Throughout the year, the juniors sold at ball games, held dances and worked at vari- ous jobs, to earn enough money to entertain the seniors at the annual Junior-Senior Ban- quet and Prom. The track season of '56 found six juniors earning letters, and racking up records. In band, many of the juniors had worked up to the heads of their sections, and were mak- ing the halls of the W.H.S. ring with music from 1:00 to 2:00 every afternoon. The chorus worked hard, and held some very good concerts. The juniors helped carry the load this year. To top off the year, we entertained the seniors at the banquet and prom. A good time was had by all who attended. Here it, is the fgJ,1 of '56, n:l.nety-five seniors reign over the lower hall, not with out the aid of Mr. Hiller, of course. Our motto for a while was Shape Up or Ship Nt , most of us shaped up. This was our last year, and we wanted to make the most of it. We worked and worked hard to keep our grades high, yet we took in extra-curricular activities and participated in all phases of school life. Our last football season was successful, with seniors earning major W's. Harlys Porter was the Homecoming queen, elected by the student body to reign over the Homecoming activities. Cheering the teams on were our three senior cheerleaders. Our basketball teams both had good seasons. Earning major letters were 2 boys and 5 girls. Through- out the senior year, most of the students tried to make sound plans for the future, our teachers helped us a great deal, and we wish to give them our sincere thanks for all the aid they have given us.
