The amount of your enjoyment will reflect to some degree, the skills, knowledge, and attitudes derived from this diversified curric- ulm. Training has been provided for a fuller life experience in your work beyond school. Students, Faculty, Board of Trustees, and many Parents have teamed together to provide your education. Community, School, and State have joined to make your training efficient and progressive. However, the great measure of success must be attributed to your many attainments. We are proud of your patriotism and devotion to democratic prin- ciples as shown in individual accomplishments and attitudes. Student government for practicing these principles. The Poppy has re- corded many of these experiences which you will cherish in the future The Faculty and Board of Trustees wish you success and cont- inued happiness in your work. f ff v ff Wah, 4 DEUICHHUH H971 The members of the Poppy Staff would like to pay tribute to one of the most liked faculty members of the Winters Joint Union High School. Because of her interest in the students and in the school's activities, we humbly dedicate this issue of the Poppy to Miss June Stunbles. 4 Arthur Chaboya Dons Gray in XL965' , x wi '53 Charles HMI Jack Mermod Wxlham Pugh N Leo Rochelle Loxs Spafford June Sixynmbles R216 Wllkefl ibm, ' 7 Q '3 I' sf ,U BUHHD UF TRUSTEES QL.eft to rightj Weaver Cmddini, Clerkg Joe D. It was a very exciting year for us. We gave a Halloween Dance and also the annual Turkey Trot. In December, we were very excited as we received our class rings. On becoming Juniors we had charge of the concessions. During the year we gave some sock dances after the basketball games. In March we gave our Prom, which we had been looking forward to all year. Our therne was Ebb Tide. We would like to express many thanks to Mrs. Spafforcl and Mr. Chaboya for all the time and help they have given to us during the past year. 17 gf '55 5 Q ., G, 1 , - 0 Rf f-155 ,11 4 ,r , 'Ez - N 9' 4 ' I , A A ., 2, l , if if First Row fLeft to rightj Mr. Rochelle, Advisor, Virginia Russell, Josephine Ruiz, Evelyn Wylie, Lillis Moore, Zelda Day, Eleanor Trujillo, Shirley Sattazahn, Margarita Peralta, Brenda Halley, Estelle Herron, Naomi Muncy, Elaine Halley, Mrs. Wilken, Advisor. The gym was full of horseshoes and symbols of good fortune and bad luck. During our first meetings we found we had lots to learn about parliamentary procedure, We then discussed our weakness and our meetings improved. In between making our Youth Day float and decorating for the Baccalaureate we were thinking of our Junior Prom next year. So this year turned out to be one of our most successful years, ,J X, First Row fleft to rightj Mrs. Gray, Advisor, Armida lnvernon, Charlene Russell, Judy Coombs, Alicc Guerard, Linda Johnson, Ruth Akao, Virginia Taylor, Marilyn Adams, Mary Crites, Hortense Lopez, Herrnalene Sunderman, Dorothy Robertson, Kathy Smith, Janet Washabaugh, Mr. Mermod, Advisor. Three students dropped out, which left us with fifty-five. This year the freshmen were spared the initiation given by the seniors until the Freshmen Reception, where they supplied the entertainment. Dale Hansen and Tommy Thomson had to scrub the gym floor with a tooth brush and a coke bottle filled with water. Then they had to peel onions in the middle of the gym floor, and Wally Snodgrass had to sew them together again. Diane Young, Karen Christie, and Frank Martinez had to wear diapers and drink milk out of a baby bottle. Bonnie Hartzog had to wear a paper bag, and Arthur Hobbs had to be dis- guised as a woman. The freshmen entered many school activities and helped to make the dances and sports a success this year. The class enjoyed tgie first year of high school and is looking forward to three more glorious years at Winters High UHGHHIZHTIUHS 0 5 N9 if 1 as Q, YS Q- . H BHSHETBHLL The A's 1954 basketball season was very successful for what little height the team had. They lost three or four close games where more height would have meant af victory. The Warriors started out the season by losing their first three games. Their first win came when they beat the Woodland JV's, 48-Z5, here at Winters. The Varsity started their league play by defeating Davis 46-34. This left the Warriors in a tie with Dixon and Clarksburg for first. Then they lost a close one to Clarksburg Z5-30, to drop. to second behind Dixon and Clarksburg for first. Their third game was played against Dixon which they lost 33-41, to drop to fourth behind Dixon 3-0, Clarksburg 3-0, and Esparto Z-1, The following week they dropped their third straight at Esparto 46-56. Then they knocked off Courtland 46-33 for their second league win. Starting the second half Winters again beat Davis in Davis this time by only one pointg 36-35. The following week they lost their second close game to Clarksburg, this time by two pointsg 35-37. The next week Winters went to Dixon and took the worst beating of the year 32-52. Then the Warriors played their last home game and racked up their highest score of the year in beating Esparto 61-50. The A's dumped Courtland for the second time to end the season in a tie for third and forth. U BHSHETBHLL This year the C's had to learn one of the toughest lessons offered in the world of sports-that of taking a series of loses in the spirit of good sportsmen. Any member of the squad can testify to the fact that things look grim when the odds are consistently against you. Nevertheless, Coach Hitt and his boys kept on fighting and therefore deserve a hand. The C's started out their league play against Davis. The final score was 12- 43. Their next game against Clarksburg was a little closer, but ended 12-23. Their third game was with Dixon who edged ahead 37-26. The C's had Clarks- burg seriously worried, when they came within three points of toppling them. The final score was 23-26. At this point the C's were improving fast. The C's didn't lose their courage and fight even after losing to Courtland 27-32. In the return game with Clarksburg Winters fought their hardest but fell short 19-36. In the re- turn game with Davis the boys had a double obstacle. First, they were up against rough competition, and second, they had to play on Davis' court. The score ll-49. There was no stopping the champion Dixon Rams by a score of 31-11. Playing their last home game made no difference to the C's for they were determined to play their hardest win or lose. Esparto won by a score of 12-22. Courtland forged ahead to finish up the season with a score of 40-17. 46 .f'm, 513- f 'F .w 5 lffff 55 A V.. 'xr - . . L. 'wfx 5 Q' Q. ,, X 'f Q. L .1gA O A 3? n 4 f Q lf, 4,-M-Mi? .liz A WW ! 'ra The Warriors defending Champions were knocked off twice by last year's runner-up Clarksburg team to lose the Championship by one game. Although a good defensive team, the Warriors lacked the punch at the plate that they displayed during the previous season. The only two games the team lost were heart breakers. The first one in Clarksburg they were leading all the way, only to lose in the last inning by one run. Most all of the players were Juniors this year, with some promising Sophomores and Juniors coming up from the J V squad. Next year's varsity should be one of the best in years.
