6 THE RIVERSIDE being made. This was combined With the January meeting of the Parent- Teacher Association, and about seventy visitors were present. We feel that this meeting was benencial to both the visitors and students in increasing interest in school affairs, and that it should be made an annual affair. PARENT-TEACHERS We, the students of W. H. S., con- gratulate the Parent-Teachers Asso- ciation on the line interest they have taken in the schcol this year. They have already raised a small sum for the erection of a new school building. This does not seem very large compared to the price of a new school house, but as the old saying goes, Great oaks from little acorns grow. A. W. L., '28. WHY? Why? What? That is what most people will say when they glance at this. Why is a high school education necessary for success in life? Some few are successful in procur- ing good jobs Without a high school education, but they are what you might call the Lucky few. Does it pay to spend four years in high school? This is the question that con- fronts most students upon graduating from grammar school. 70fZJ will say no -they are so eager to earn a few dollars, but the one who says yes and receives a high school diploma has a 100W better chance for success than the one who says no because out of every 100 pupils who enter the fifth grade only 13 graduate from high school. A. W. L., '28. IGNORANCE It is better to be unborn than u'1- taufjht, for ignorance is the root to misfortune. This is a quotation froom a great man who lived years ago, and this statement is very true. 90fZp of the crimes committed tcday are done by ignorant people, it has been said. Ignorance is bliss, it is often said, but every child should be taught about Worldly matters and should be set on the right track by his or her parents. A. W. L., '28. NOW Do not put off till tomorrow what you can do today, but a great ma- jority of people do. You often hear people say, Better late than never, but this is practiced so much that it is a sort of habit and a habit is the hardest thing in the world to break. It is better to make a practice of being on time or a little ahead of time and your success in life will reach a higher degree. I owe all my success in life to always being a quarter of an hour ahead of time. -Lord Nelson. A. W. L., '28.

THE IIIVICICSIIJE 5 EDITORIAL BOARD The If1'l'l?l'Sl.d!? begins another year cf iln existence. May it live long, aiid bloom often! A school paper is one of tho best indications of a pros- perous and well centered school. It serves as a medium which draws the schofas abd ho1irc.s clcser together. It Lifes an opportunity for several of the scholars who have an aptitude for x.1'itiaig? and literary work to receive thcix flint patronage. It is also a convenient may in which to perpetu- ate the athletic teams and their records. On January 26, 1928, an evening session of the school was held from 7:00 to 8:30, to give those parents and friends an opportunity to visit the school, who ordinarily were un- able to do so through the regular sessiong and to give the citizens of the town a chance to see how the school is conducted and the progress that is

THE RIVERSIDE 7 ATHLETICS Athletics in moderation give a very necessary side to school life, for those who do not participate as well as those who do. There should not be a person in Winterport who is not glad to go to any game in which our boys play. We ought to feel that in our representatives the entire student body is on the field and that with every member of the school, rests the honor of the school. It is not so much the games that a team wins that count, but the games that it plays with indomitable and courageous spirit, in aclean, fair way. Nothing produces so poor an effort as to have a member of the school run down or criticise its players. Well meant criticism is all very well, in the school room but outside it becomes traitorous and it is the undivided duty of all to suppress it. , SCHOOL SPIRIT School spirit or loyalty to Winter- port High School does not simply mean the payment of all dues, that subscription to the school paper and support of school teams. School spirit means more than that, it means that one should be able to forget one's self in loyalty to the school. Think what your school is to you! What it is giving to you. It gives an opportunity for you to increase your knowledge and power. It offers social advancement. Many of our greatest pleasures may be traced to the fount of school life. The school offers the best to you, and even though one takes the wo-rst, still it should be given thanks and honor for the privileges that have been given us. EDITORIAL This is our only way of showing our parents and school friends what we are doing in. school. We wish to thank most heartily the merchants of our town and neighboring towns, who so kindly gave us advertisements, and we trust that they will receive more trade by advertising in The River- side?
