On July 31, 1984 at the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles, Rowdy Gaines put himself and Winter Haven on the map. During this intense competition, Rowdy beat some of the best swimmers in the world and won his first gold medal in the men's 100-meter freestyle. Following this victory, he won two more gold medals in the men's 4-by-100 relay and 4-by-100 medley relay. Being a former Winter Haven High School swim-star and a four-time All-American at Auburn University was a strong base for his swimming career. Not only was he named Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Year in 1982, at one stage in his career he held the world record in the 100-yard freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, and 200-meter freestyle. To him, there was nothing like the thrill of the Olympics, and to reach this goal of being a top athlete, Rowdy worked hard and kept that special spirit. Rowdy Gaines — a true all American. Senior Index 335 “A Special Spirit” — that’s what we have hoped to capture in this edition of the WHA HWA HTA SEE yearbook. The school year is made up of all types of experiences. Through this book we hope to have preserved those fond memories, so they can always be rekindled at the turn of a page. Memories are what make life worthwhile. We hope your lives have been very worthwhile and full of special times, too. We want to thank Bryn Alan for the help they gave us putting the yearbook together. A special “thank you” goes to the photographers — Charlie, Donald, and Larry for their creative ability in taking pictures for our book. Our deep appreciation also goes to Mr. Jim Bolin of Taylor Publishing Company for his help, ideas, and concern for our publication. But most of all we want to thank Mr. Cox, for all his unexhaustible supply of patience and understanding when everything was so hectic around deadline time. As the years pass, we hope the memories created herein will remind you of that “Special Spirit” of a Winter Haven Blue Devil and will help you relive those wonderful years with a special feeling. Our best wishes to each of you for a happy and successful lifetime! Mark Bowers 336 Closing
