2 Three Girls Attend Girls' State Last summer Teri Davis, Nita Day, and Patsy Kunze, seniors at WHHS, attended the Girl's State convention at Florida State University for one week. The girls chosen as nominees each delivered a three minute speech on Americanism and told why they wanted to go to Girl's State. The girl's gave their speeches in Front of the American Legion Auxiliary, the group which chose them. During the week in Tallahassee they participated in mock state government. 4 1) Front: David Woolley, Mark Schreiber, Daryll O'Connell, Jim Carson, Mark Barnes, Lem Ceathers, Dan Trueblood. Boy's Staters View Government in Tallahassee American Legion, sponsor of Boys' State, sent twelve boys to the capitol of Florida, for a week of mock government training in July of '77. The ten who represented Winter Haven were: David Wooley, Daryl O'Con-nel, Jim Carson, Dan Trueblood, Lemuel Geathers, Mark Barnes, John Hughes, Derrick Woodard, Rodney Triplett, and MarkSchreiber. They resided in the men's dorms at Florida State University and attended sessions which included prominent guest speakers. The honorable Rubin Askew, Governor of the state of Florida, presented the Keynote Speech to Boys' Staters. After a week of vigorous campaigning, elections determined state offices for those politically successful. Dan Trueblood defeated his opposition to become a Supreme Court Justice and Mark Schreiber became a Senator. During the conference Winter Haven's John Hughes won a nomination to Boys' Nation. 24

1 Student Council Holds Fund Raising Volleyball Game The 77-78 Student Council, under the leadership of President Dan Trueblood, consisted of all the officers and representatives of each class as well as its own officers, Vice-President — Scott Calloway, Secretary — Olivia Smarte, and Treasurer — Valerie Sheffler. The Student Council represents and governs the student body as a whole by promoting school activities and school spirit. They sponsored such projects as the Parent-Student Handbook, the selling of Blue Devil Derbies, and a Junior-Senior volleyball game to raise money for Homecoming. Homecoming, Student Council's major project, successfully pleased all who attended, mainly due to the intensified planning and hard work of the members. The group also took charge of the annual Howdy Dance which welcomed the sophomore class. Mr. Roy Riley supervised this industrious group of students. 1) Mrs. Aldermen's homeroom's Christmas tree wins Christmas tree contest sponsored by Student Council. 2) Abby Owens, Gigi Davis, Olivia Smarte, Terry Hudson, Tonya Johnson, Karen Kalogridis, Tammy Farely, Sheila Woolfolk, Tina Joyce, Teresa Harris, Debbie Owens, Sandy Davis, Jacque Reese, Lynn Woolley, Brenda Dryden, Charlotte Walker, Tina Ford, Laurie Owens, Laura Parker, Anne Harlan, Teri Davis, Gina Emry, Lottie Ponder, Scott Calloway, Mike Hill, George Geathers, Dan Trueblood, John Tanke, Chauncey Fagler, Lemuel Geathers, Karen Kingham, Gary Wright, Brad Farris, Robert Polumbo, and Laurie Anderson, Student Council members for 77-78. 3) Mrs. Koon, one of the Student Council sponsors, poses for picture. 4) Officers: Olivia Smarte, Valerie Sheffler, Anne Harlan, Scott Calloway, Dan Trueblood. 5) James Schoonover, Lem Geathers, Kevin Ray, and George Geathers, support Student Council in fund raising volleyball game for Homecoming.
