Boy's Staters View Government in Tallahassee American Legion, sponsor of Boys' State, sent twelve boys to the capitol of Florida, for a week of mock government training in July of '77. The ten who represented Winter Haven were: David Wooley, Daryl O'Con-nel, Jim Carson, Dan Trueblood, Lemuel Geathers, Mark Barnes, John Hughes, Derrick Woodard, Rodney Triplett, and MarkSchreiber. They resided in the men's dorms at Florida State University and attended sessions which included prominent guest speakers. The honorable Rubin Askew, Governor of the state of Florida, presented the Keynote Speech to Boys' Staters. After a week of vigorous campaigning, elections determined state offices for those politically successful. Dan Trueblood defeated his opposition to become a Supreme Court Justice and Mark Schreiber became a Senator. During the conference Winter Haven's John Hughes won a nomination to Boys' Nation. 24
