Assistant Principal 18 Academics Mr. Riley goes over the day s schedule Mrs. Aldred takes a letter for Mr. Lofton. Assistant principal. Mr. Baggett, patrols halls. Mr. Herman Lofton, Principal. Mr. Roy Riley, Asst. Principal and Mr. L. Baggett, Asst. Principal provided leadership for the administration at WHHS. Supporting administrators included Mr. Jim Gill, Curriculum Coordinator, Mrs. Betty Zehntner, registrar and Mr. Jim Chambers Dean of Student affairs, Mr. Lemuel Geathers headed the attendance operation for the school. The combined efforts of these men and women brought about many important decisions and quick actions. Academics 19 Mrs. Desmond reviews the budget. Receptionist Mrs. LoCiero answers the phone. Mrs. LoCiero and Mr. Chambers discuss the activities for the day. 20 Academics f office Mrs. Aldred ponders the day's work. Mrs. Zehntner works on schedule changes. The office staff of WHHS consisted of Katherine Aldred, Frances Desmond, Ann Hines, Jean Kratz, Katye Lawrence, and Gailya LoCic-ero. The staff worked hard at bookkeeping, financial records, helping the administration and students who come in the office. The Associate teachers, Janet Donahue and Dorothy Teele, assisted the faculty in any way possible. Academics 21 Students wait in line to receive their schedules. Mr. Scramm helps students with individual problems. Mrs. Ingram sends transcripts to colleges for seniors. 22 Academics Mr. Schram checks files in the record room. Guidance The Guidance Department, located next to the main office, consisted of Mr. Schramm, Mrs. Ingram, and Mrs. Leonard and provided information about colleges, tests, administration requirements, scholarships, and occupational outlooks. The guidance office was available to all students with individual problems and needs before, during, and after school. Mrs. Leonard Sophomore Counselor. Academics 23 Sophomores spend their free period in the library. Mrs. Horne, a librarian. The Winter Haven High School library provided a place for quiet study and research. Consisting of over 18,000 books and over 80 magazines and newspapers, the library was a place to relax with a good book or to write a term paper for English. The Audio-Visual department was also a branch of the library. Whether checking out a television or borrowing a tape recorder, the A.V. department catered to the students' needs. Mrs. West and Mrs. Grant discuss visual aids. 24 Academics Library Students use the library as a study hall during school. Miss Wolfe likes reading magazines. Academics 25 Attendance --jf Mr. Geathers checks attendance. Mrs. Kratz approves prearranged absences. The attendance staff kept records of all absences and tardies for approximately 2600 students enrolled for the 76-77 school year. The staff consisted of Mrs. Kratz, Miss Lawe-rence, and Mr. Geathers. Students go to the attendance office for excused tardies. 26 Academics Teachers receive lunch along with the students. Mrs. Barton collects tickets at the end of the line. After school. Mr. Lyons helps clean. Cafeteria Custodians The cafeteria staff fixed many good lunches for both the students and faculty. During the holiday seasons the staff prepared festive meals and decorated the lunchroom to fit all occasions. The custodians of our school kept all the classes clean and the campus neat. They helped with repairs and acted as security guards for the school at night! Academics 31 Mr. Bryant prepares activities for Agriculture class. Ag. class provides many opportunities for girls. The Agriculture Department consisted of 7 different courses concerning vegetation and livestock. These classes were designed for the student who wishes to go into a field in Agriculture or relating to Agriculture. Students taking this course worked both inside and outside learning how to grow plants and how to care for animals. 32 Academics Academics 33 Students in art classes display their work. Coach Morgan instructs art students. i- l i iUk ■fa III ■ II — - V Tom Butz experiments with water colors. Students enrolled in the many art classes at W.H.H.S., received excellent instructions ranging from basic to advanced and specialized levels. Art I and Art II increase students awareness of art and it’s influence on life styles. Drawing and painting offered a deeper concentration on areas of painting. Three demen-tional design provided instruction in the art of sculpting. Drawing I was a single semester course for students interested in drawing using various approaches and techniques. Art students work with clay to produce surprising results. 34 Academics Mr. Wing draws abstract designs. Academics 35 Band Drum Major: Rick Alltop Growing bigger and better every year, the Pride of Winter Haven consisted of 290 members included alternates and Devilettes. Under the direction of Mr. Jim Parker, who was assisted by Mr. Jim Reese, the band put together over six different Halftime shows. Besides the annual concerts and contests, the band had the honor of performing a 12 minute half-time show at a Tampa Bay Buccaneers football game. On the field, the band was directed by Rick Alltop. A good band reflects diligent rehearsals. Officers and Representatives take charge of all band activities. 36 Academics The 290 members of the “Pride of Winter Haven. Gwen Faircloth. and Tammy Farley. 38 Academics The marching band exhibits a perfect formation. 4 Practice contributes towards a faultless performance. Mr. Reese looks forward to the day eagerly. Business This year the Business Department added to its curriculum. Along with Accounting, Typing I and II Record Keeping, Business Math, Business Law, Shorthand, Secretarial Office Practice, Clerical Office Practice and Data Processing, five new classes were added. These included Business Principles and Management, Business Psychology, Business Machines, College Typing and College Notehand. In charge of this department is Mr. Hugh B. Anderson, who has been at WHHS for two years. 40 Academics Mrs. Gilley helps Linda Detrick with a problem. ; Mr. Anderson checks roll in his class. Students in college notehand memorize new rules. Mr. Cox and Tony Hancock go over a typing assignment. Academics 41 Students practice with business machines. A serious moment for Mrs. Harris. Proofreading copy takes an important role in typing. 42 Academics Assistance always seems to make things easier. CBE Cooperative Business Education was another part of the WHHS business department. The difference was that this portion of the business was taught at Southwest High School, which has been a part of WHHS for four years. Mr. James Cox and Mrs. Sonja Parmer, who is a Certified Public Secretary, taught these classes. Mrs. Parmer checks to see that things are running smoothly Academics 43 Chorus Officers of Girl's Chorus. Mr. Jones directs all his choral groups enthusiastically. Mr. Jones goes over section parts with Concert Choir. 44 Academics Girl s Chorus concists of 20 members. Concert Choir Officers; led by Pres. Larry Riddle and V.P. Jeff Coons. Under the direction of Mr. Joe E. Jones, the choral department was divided into three groups: Girl’s Chorus, Concert Choir, and Vocal Ensemble. The groups sold chocolate as their money-making project and performed their annual concerts. Academics 45 Concert Choir has 58 members including 18 sopranos. 17 altos. 11 tenors, and 12 basses. 46 Academics Fourteen selected vocalists make up the Vocal Ensemble. Vocal Ensemble consisted of 16 members who auditioned for this selection group. They performed for many organizations and clubs throughout the year. Academics 47 Initiation for DCT Students. 48 Academics Students work on DECA float. Coordinator of DCT, Rusty Payne. Diversified Cooperative Training, a well organized program endeavored to provide each student with a chance to receive training in a future occupation. Students who took DCT received preparation for careers in retail, wholesale, and service occupations such as buying, selling, marketing, merchandising and business management. All of these students put into use these skills in part time jobs which, after graduation developed into full time opportunities. Academics 49 DCT Mrs. Leta Darfus. DCT classroom. Academics 51 DRIVERS EDUCATION Mr. Hancock watches student drivers. 76 models make driving exciting for new students on the range. Students learn how to angle park. Student practices driving. 52 Academics Students practice backing into a garage. Films shown aid in the basis driving skills. Driver Education prepared the student to be a responsible, well-trained motorist. This program consisted of 3 sections: classroom assignments, driving exercises on the range, and personal instruction on the road. This class contained mostly sophomores all having at least their restricted driver’s license. Academics 53 En9lish Mrs. Gray uses a visual aid. Sophomores encountered techniques in literature and grammar during their first year at W.H.H.S. The basic outline for the essay was taught to the junior English classes along with structure of the short story. Meanwhile the seniors concentrated on dramatic literature, after grammar review for the SAT test. Mrs. Wolfe, who teaches A.P. English and Speech and Drama, headed this department. -vi inS v ij Mrs. Kendrick watches a student s play. Mrs. Price gives a student individual instruction. Students work diligently in class. Academics 55 Students fill the open spaces in the Language Arts building. 56 Academics f Academics 57 Martha Williams expresses herself using pantomine. Debbie Skillen gives an impromptu speech. Denise Lanning and Kathy Leighton. 58 Academics Mrs. Wolfe suggests pointers to her speech students. ENGLISH The Drama Department was headed by Mrs. Ruth Wolfe, who gave students a good background in theatrical arts. Students that took the full year course gave speeches and performed one-act plays. The semester class taught students the basic format for writing speeches and provided experience in giving speeches. Creative costumes emphasize the actors' roles. Academics 59 French French Club Pres.. Brenda Eubanks. French Students work hard on homework. Miss Golden uses audio equipment. 60 Academics I -r-' .•«?: Studying in the language lab provides a change of pace. French I, French II, and Advanced French classes opened opportunities for students to widen their views of the language and lives of people in French countries. The French classes this year were taught by Miss Carol Golden. Language teachers prepare food for AFS. Academics 61 German Mrs. Joiner enjoys teaching German. Students take notes on German films. Students converse in German. 62 Academics German students spend time translating assignments. German II was added to the Winter Haven High School foreign language department to meet the demand of last year's German I students. Mrs. Judy Joiner taught both German I and II this year. This language has become as popular as Spanish and French at W.H.H.S. Academics 63 r Latin opens the door of ancient civilizations. 64 Academics Sentences format require concentration to understand. Mrs. Colyer teaches both Latin and English. Latin rejoined the foreign language department after a year's absence. Mrs. Colyer taught the single class of Latin I students. Latin was extremely helpful for learning English grammar and the basis of other foreign languages. Academics 65 Mrs. Golden takes roll before class. 66 Academics Mrs. Hardin's class prepares to begin lessons. Mrs. Gloria Alderman, Miss Carol Golden, and Mrs. Hardin used many techniques in teaching their Spanish I, II, III, IV, and V classes. Spanish students were able to view movies and filmstrips and listen to records in order to improve their skills in Spanish. Students struggle over Spanish lessons. Academics 67 HOME ECONOMICS Students prepare for a food test in Home Ec. Mrs. Bates instructs a family psychology class. Preparing for the future, students learned the many arts of Home Ec. The students will benefit from the skills learned, throughout their lives in everything they do. Eleven areas of Home Ec. were taught, surrounding the aspects of cooking, sewing and child development. Mrs. Dot Perry, who taught cooking, was in charge of the department. 68 Academics Mrs. Welborn helps Nanci Bird with a sewing problem. Ginger Sellers carefully prepares her food. Home EC. students await a homecooked meal. Home EC. students enjoy their work. Academics 69 Industrial Arts Mechanical Drawing requires lots of imagination. Mr. Whitaker discuss ideas in furniture Shop is fun as well as educational 70 Academics Students finish up an assignment. In the Industrial Arts program, students learned valuable skills in wood and metal working, basic electronics, and mechanical drawing. The courses included Mechanical and Industrial Drawing, Wood Design and Construction, Welding, and Small Engine Study. By gaining experiences in several different fields, students found it easier to choose future occupations according to their interests. Academics 71 Terri Oenning draws with the aid of rulers. Mrs. Moore checks her roll book. Journalism Journalism I provided instruction in all phases of journalism with emphasis on newspaper and yearbook techniques. Students learned the basic skills of Journalism which include cropping, scaling and picture techniques. This course was taught by Mrs. Jane Moore. Academics 75 The 1976-1977 WHA HWA HTA SEE staff. 76 Academics Mike adjusts the enlarger lens. Journalism Classes section requires tedious and precise work. The 76-77 Journalism MB class experienced the best year ever designing the 60th volume of the Winter Haven High School annual. Advised by Mr. William E. Gregory and edited by Richard Straughn, the yearbook evolved from the minds of a determined staff. The frustrating, yet rewarding, hours spent producing the WHA HWA HTA SEE involved: creating layouts; writing copy; taking, developing, and printing photographs; and, of course, meeting deadlines. This year s outstanding members consisted of: Academics — Heather Ryon, editor, Gwen Add-kison, Amy Chafin, Nancy Davidson, and Tami Knight: Classes — Kelly Merwin and Lynn Harman, editors, Kay Gray, Anne Harlan, and Laurie Woten; Organizations — Debbie Knowles, editor, Jennifer Hollingsworth. Steve Joiner, and Carmen Payne; Sports — Todd Dantzler, editor, Lisa Emry, Charo Granda, and Marcy Lever. Other important staff members included Mike Arnold, David Roberts, and David Woolley, photographers. Academics 77 MATH Students practice using a slide-rule. Will Sellers takes a break from math. Mr. Brisbin assigns homework with a smile. 78 Academics Mrs. Cobbett explains problems on the circle graph. Advanced Algebra II students ponder over their work. Proofs for Geometry take time and reasoning to understand. The mathematical department at W.H.H.S. had a very well-rounded level of courses from basic math to more advanced math. The classes include Math for Daily Living, Business Math, Geometry, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus, Computer Concepts, and Computer Programming. The math courses prepared students for college level instruction. Academics 79 Mr. Hagbloom helps Eddie Ogburn. Mr. Fink corrects his mistake. 80 Academics Mrs. Hampton looks through student papers. Academics 81 Physical Education Mrs. Duggar teaches football. Coach Downs reviews the baseball schedule. Mrs. Duggar takes roll. 82 Academics Coach Barton tells it like it is. P.E. students warm up. Students enjoy playing football. The Physical Education Department combined the boys’ and girls’ classes this year for the first time. Students who took this class improved in different sports ranging from archery to football. Teaching this course were J. Austin, D. Barton, B. Downs, J. Duggar, and L. Parker. P.E. class plays volleyball. Academics 83 JROTC officers stand at attention for inspection. The Junior ROTC program at WHHS was established in 1971. Each cadet member established good citizenship, self-reliance, leadership, a knowledge of basic military skills, an appreciation of the roll of the U.S. Army in support of national objectives, and an appreciation of physical fitness. The instructors consisted of Senior Army Instructor Lt. Colonel Dan Partin, Command Sergeant Major Don Dedmon, and Platoon Sergeant Ralph Glendening. 84 Academics Rifle corps practices marching skills. JROTC Lt. Colonel Dan Partin. Academics 85 vskmm £ .%£i£- %■ Drum Bugle Corps prepares to play a cadence. 86 Academics Academics 87 Science Mrs. Ting. Gary Desmond, and Jay Gray discuss autotrophs in Biology. Andy and Ann take a close look. Biology at W.H.H.S. included the study of the chemical basis of life. Different parts of the course were: classification of plants and animals, changes of life through time, and animal behavior. The scientific method was reinforced through participation in laboratory experience. The Chemistry courses at W.H.H.S. were taught by Mr. Campbell, Mr. Helmick and Mr. Chandler. The content included current topics in chemistry, concentrating on preparation for college chemistry through experimentation and computation. Students discuss a lab write-up. 92 Academics You didn’t really say that did you? Mr. Campbell demonstrates lab to Doug Barton. Physics was for students who planned to take science, engineering or math related courses in college. Strong emphasis was placed on solving problems and mathematical analysis of laboratory experiments. Main topics were motion, forces, heat and electromagnetism. Academics 93 Mrs. Garrad teaches with a smile. Mr. Lofton and Mr. Garrett have a friendly chat. Mr. Smith lectures in Social Studies. Mr. Woodard instructs his class in American History. American History students take turns participating in current events. Social Studies The Social Studies program at WHHS included many courses designed to enhance the students’ awareness of the influence of past events on their lives today. American and Florida History helped develop students into self-responsible citizens of the U.S. Ancient and Modern World History dealt with past civilizations, while Physical and Cultural Geography students studied the earth's resources, features, and cultures. Also included were psychology and sociology which involved man's society. Psychology students laugh at a skit. Academics 95 96 Academics __ Soldering metal takes place in one of the many work areas. Under the supervision of Mr. W. J. Hoffses, Polk Vocational Technical Center proveded the students with the opportunity to learn craft, skill, or trade. The appropriate atmosphere, found at the center, consisted of shops and classrooms made to resemble their business and industrial counterpart. Along with these courses, two academic courses were required. Academics 97 98 Academics Academics 99 Special Education v , ' £ Students enjoy reading and discussing. Special Education was taught to help the individual cope with his environment. In order to enrich their relationships with the people around them they learned many new things about life. This special class was taught by Miss Jackie Womack. Students help each other to learn. 100 Academics Miss Womack prepares for class. Miss Womack helps a student. Academics 101 Boys State David Haygood, Tex Carson. Ed Gardner, Todd Dantzler. Bill Stewart, Sterling Woodard, Richard Straughn, Daryl Spires, Richard Lockwood, and Mike Twyford. The Winter Haven American Legion Post 8 sponsored eleven juniors for Boys State. These boys learned the fundamentals of government in a one week session at Florida State University during the month of June. The faculty made these nominations. 102 Academics Lynn Wise, Loretta Goulsby, and Lana Beatty. Girls State American Legion Auxiliary sponsored Girls State. They selected three eleventh grade girls: Lynn Wise, Loretta Goulsby, and Lana Beatty. Girls State operated on the same principle as Boys State. Academics 103 ORGANIZATIONS Homecoming Homecoming King and Queen. Todd Dantzler. Homecoming candidate. Anne Tripp enjoying ride in the Homecoming Parade. One of the many creative entrants. 106 Organizations Richard has problems with his crown. Hard work results in First place float. The students at W.H.H.S. rewarded themselves, after weeks of hard work, a lot of sweat and a few tears, with one of the best Homecomings ever. The annual Homecoming Parade started off the festivities followed by the game with the Bartow Yellow Jackets at 8:00 that night. “The Big Blue Machine’’ registered their biggest win of the season by crushing the “Jackets’’ by the score of 52 to 14. After the game, the band “Third Time Around’’ provided entertainment for all the students who attended the dance. Then at midnight, the crowning of King Richard Elmore. and Queen Lana Beatty, highlighted the evening. Les Jeunes Fil-les took top honors in this year’s float competition with the title, “Kong the Yellow Jackets and Make us King.” Philos and Fellows float. Homecoming Court. Organizations 107 Amiketos Homecoming entry Members Patricia Pinner, and Vickie Knowles 108 Organizations Amiketos Keto members caught by surprise Amiketos 40 member organization Amiketos, the sister club to Octagon, was sponsored by the Optimist Club of Winter Haven. Their activities included: annual lollipop sales, homecoming activities, the sponsoring of the New Year’s Dance, the cleaning of the school seal, formal initiation, Amiketos-Octagon get together, the maki ng of Skateboard posters for the Optimists Club, and the selling of Christmas trees with Octagon. The officers for Amiketos were Beth Kingham, President; Lori Bloeth, Vice-President; Diane Gallo, Treasurer; Charlene Lahey, Secretary; Meg Snively, Historian; Rhonda Bigelow, Parliamentarian; and Kina Johnson, Chaplin. Mrs. Barbara Hampton was the faculty advisor for the 60 members of the Amiketos service club. Organizations 109 OCTAGON Clifford Ford, Octagon President. Octagon officers. Octagon, a club that was known for it’s rambunctious members, was sponsored by the Evening Optimist Club of Winter Haven. The activities pursued by Octagon were: their annual Christmas tree sale, a dance, helping their sister club, Amiketos, build a homecoming float, formal initiation, and participation in the annual White Christmas program. Octagons officers were: Clifford Ford, President: Reggie Jahn, Vice-President; Mark Barnes, Secretary; Bob Mason, Treasurer; Rick Bierley, Senior Representative; Danny Tillman, Junior Representative; and Jim Tofanelli, Sophomore Representative. Anchor, one of the progressive girls clubs of WHHS, was sponsored by the Pilot Club of Winter Haven. Among Anchors variation of activ-ites, they participated in the following; Anchor Regional Meeting, a most successful event of the year on October 9th. Other Anchor Clubs from all over the state of Florida came to Winter Haven and participated in workshops and special programs. Other activities included morning devotions, the production of the dial-a-devils, having a Quiz Team and Brain Brawl. Winter Haven, now with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses, met the Gainesville Hurricanes in their fourth game of the season. The Devils jumped to a 38-0 lead early in the fourth quarter and increased that lead to 52-14 by the end of the game. This gave the Devils a record of 2 wins and 4 losses. The Plant City Raiders defeated the Devils in their sixth game of the season by the score of 17-13. Don Cole and Ray Fields scored the Devils touchdowns while Maris Bilbrey booted an extra point to give the Devils their total of 13 points. Orlando Jones were the next victi ms of the Big Blue Machine falling to the Devils by a score of 38-12. Don Cole broke the 1000 yard mark by gaining 142 yards while Ray Fields threw a 26 yard touchdown pass to Dennis Polumbo which gave the devils a 13 to 10 lead. The Devils had the ball deep in their own territory late in the game and instead of punting from their own endzone the devils took a safety and punted the ball from the 20 yard line. The Lions brought the ball to the 15 yardline and missed a 32 yard field goal to preserve a 13 to 12 victory. With a record of 4 wins and 5 losses the Big Blue took on their cross-town rivals, the Auburndale Bloodhounds, in their last game of the 1976 season. Both Winter Haven High and Auburndale played excellent defense throughout the entire game in that they allowed their opponents to only one touchdown in the fourth quarter. A'dale led by the score of 6-0 on a two yard plunge by Calvin Davis with nine minutes left in the fourth down field and Don Cole score from the two with 38 seconds left in the game and Maris Bilbrey put the Big Blue out in front to stay. Football This year’s Junior Varsity football team proved to be outstanding on the field as they completed the season with a 4-2 record. They were victorious against Auburndale, Lake Wales, Gainesville, Orlando Boone. Bartow Kathleen, and Seabreeze. The Blue Devils even reached two 100 point games when they played Haines City and Tampa Catholic. Under the supervision of Coach Clay Garrett, the junior varsity team met such competition as Santa Fe, Bartow, Lake Wales, Tampa Catholic, Auburndale, and Haines City. The toughest team seemed to be St. Pete in which our Baby Blue squeezed by with a one point victory. They also went into overtime against the Gainsville Hurricanes, but managed to defeat them. The girls record was 17 wins and only 2 losses, which were against a tough undefeated Tampa King team. Girls Basketball The starters for the team were Dorothy Lewis, Lisa Emry, Brenda Elrod, Sherri Moore, Brenda Robinson, and Robin Elkins. Brenda Elrod lead the team with an average of 16 points a game, Lewis followed with 12, while Elkins contributed 10 and Emry chipped in 8. Lisa Emry was out almost half the season after injuring her ankle. Other members of the team who helped make this season a successful one were: Jean Ray, Fannie Page, Avis Cowart. The team was strong in both sprinters and distance runners. The sprinters were led by Jerome Alls and Donald Cole, both of whom placed first in over 50% of their meets. Under the coaching of Mrs. Josephine Austin, the 1976-1977 girls track team was again a great success in the participation of approximately ten meets. The sprinters were led by Shirley Covington and Sheryl Wilson, while Donna Wilson and Robin Roberts helped the team a great deal. Lisa Emry led the distance runners, while Avis Cowart and Laurie McQueen also did an outstanding job. Fannie Paige and Angie Bowi ran the 440, while Debbie Overbay kept lowering her times in the hurdles. Girls Cross Country The 1976-77 season for the Girls Cross Country was again a great success. The team placed first in the county which made it their third-consecutive victory for the County Championship. Top runner was Lisa Emry who led the team with a first place finish and set a new school record in the Plant City Invitational Meet. Wendy Clifford also excelled in the meets until a knee injury in mid-season sidelined her for the rest of the year.
