CLEYEE JOHNSON THORNTON Business Education Training students to be successful in business is the main purpose of our business education department. Miss Hilty has been teaching in Winter Haven for many years. She received a B.S. from Kansas State Teachers College and an M.A. from Columbia University. Mr. Stevenson holds a B.S. from Indiana State Teachers College. He taught six years before coming to Winter Haven. He teaches business training and business math. Mrs. Johnson teaches bookkeeping and business law. She has a B.S. from Oklahoma State College. Mrs. Thornton teaches shorthand and secretarial training. She received a B.S. and an M.A. from Florida Southern College. She is Pilot Club representative to the Anchor Club. Homemaking Our future homemakers need training to make them the best in the field. Mrs. Martin and Miss Ward teach the homemaking classes and are cosponsors of the F.H.A. Mrs. Martin holds a B.S. from F.S.U. Miss Ward has a B.S. from Guilford College and has done graduate work at the Universities of North Carolina and Florida and at F.S.U. D.C..T. The D.C.T. program enables students to get valuable on-the-job training. Mr. Traviss and Mr. Padgett are our D.C.T. coordinators. Mr. Traviss holds a B.S. from Michigan State. Mr. Padgett has an A.B. from Wofford College and an M.A. from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Padgett and Mr. Traviss are co-sponsors of the D.C.T. Club. ROBERT STEPHENSON MRS. Math and Science These two subjects, increasingly important in our curriculum, are taught by a very competent staff of teachers. Mr. Mann, who received his B.S. from Lynchburg College and his M.S. from the University of Virginia, teaches chemistry and physics and sponsors the Key Club. Trigonometry, solid geometry, algebra II and Senior math arc taught by Miss Smith. During her free period she devotes her time to the production of the yearbook. She received her A.B. from F.S.U. and her M.A. from Columbia. Mr. Young, who has a B.S. from Mansfield College and an M.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, teaches geometry and business math and is the sponsor of the Hi-Y Club. Besides teaching biology, Mr. Bucher helps us to have one of the most productive Student Councils in the state. He holds a B.A. from Ashland College and an M.A. from Kent State University. CHESTER A. MANN Miss Hughes sponsors the Biology Club and the newly organized Beacon Club. She teaches biology. Living Science and business English. Miss Hughes is a graduate of Florida Southern College with a B.S. degree. A graduate of the University of Florida with a B.S. degree and an M.A., Mr. Saliba teaches algebra I, business math and applied math. He is faculty advisor to the Wheel Club. Mr. Wessel attended Springfield College and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. While he was in college he played first base on a Baltimore Orioles farm team. Industrial Arts In the Industrial Arts Department, boys are helped to develop skills in mechanical drawing and shop. Mr. Jamison, who graduated from Florida Southern College with a B.S. and from the University of Florida with an M.A., teaches mechanical drawing and shop. Mr. Erickson came to the United States from Kolbeck, Sweden. He attended Benjamin Franklin College and trains boys in vocational shop. WARREN HARRELL ROBERT JOHN JAMISON ERICKSON Agriculture Mr. Harrell, who graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. degree, is in charge of our fine agriculture department. He also sponsors the F.F.A. Physical Education Coach Ausley received his A.B. from Western Kentucky State and his M.A. from the University of Florida. He is the head coach of the Devils varsity football team. Miss Waldrop teaches girls physical education. She has a B.S. degree and an M.A. degree from Peabody. Coach Whitney has led our very fine baseball team through many successful seasons. He graduated from the University of Tampa with a B.S. degree. Our basketball team has won many victories through the expert guidance of Coach Deedrick. He has a B.S. degree from Florida Southern College and an M.A. degree from the University of Florida. He also instructs the drivers training classes.
