Library and Social Studies Through history and social studies we arc able to gain knowledge of our world, its people, its problems and its wonders. Mrs. Scarbrough, our librarian, is always ready to help us find information we may need to fulfill a successful year on Our Way Across. She received an A.B. degree and a P.G. certificate from F.S.U. Problems, history and literature of the Bible are taught by Mrs. Copeland. She also sponsors the International Club. She received a B.A. from Lander College and an M.A. from Florida Southern College. This year Mrs. Copeland’s book, La Florida. was published and adopted as a state text for junior high history classes. Mrs. Whitney, a graduate of the University of Tampa, with a B.S. degree, teaches American History, psychology and sponsors the National Honor Society. She is the Key Club honorary Sweetheart. Mrs. Baur, who teaches world history and English II, came to Winter Haven from Auburndale High. She received her A.B. from Murray State College and is the Tri-Hi-Y sponsor. Mrs. Schopke, a sophomore sponsor, teaches world history. She has a B.S. degree from F.S.U. A graduate of the College of St. Catherine, Mrs. Laney teaches American history and world history. This year Mrs. Laney had charge of the Junior concessions. The Junior Red Cross and the F.T.A. are sponsored by Mrs. DuCharme. She teaches world history and American history and sees to the production of the weekly school radio program. She holds a B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota. MRS. LEE I LA MRS. MRS. DOROTHY DILLARD ROY WOODS This year a new and very vital department—that of fine and applied arts—has been added to our school program. This department is intended to increase the students’ appreciation of and knowledge in the field of art and to give the talented student an opportunity to improve his skill. Languages The language department teaches the students the basic principles of a foreign language and introduces them to the literature and culture of foreign countries. Mrs. Dillard leaches Lalin I, Latin II and business English. She holds an A.B. degree from F.S.U. Mrt. Dillard sponsors the Latin Club, one of our cultural organizations. Mrs. Connor teaches Spanish I and II this year. She holds an A.B. degree from F.S.U. and sponsors the Spanish Club, another of our cultural organizations. Music Our music program provides relaxation and enjoyment for the entire student body. The director of our high school hand, Mr. Wood, has developed a fine organization. He attended Marion Military Institute and received a rank two certificate from F.S.U. Mr. Sloan, the director of the glee club, has made our concert chorus an outstanding one. A graduate of Vanderbilt University with a B.A., Mr. Sloan has brought his music students appreciation of the fine arts. Art MRS. RUTH CONNOR MARION SLOAN Mrs. Harritt, our art instructor, came to Winter Haven five years ago from Chicago. Math and Science These two subjects, increasingly important in our curriculum, are taught by a very competent staff of teachers. Mr. Mann, who received his B.S. from Lynchburg College and his M.S. from the University of Virginia, teaches chemistry and physics and sponsors the Key Club. Trigonometry, solid geometry, algebra II and Senior math arc taught by Miss Smith. During her free period she devotes her time to the production of the yearbook. She received her A.B. from F.S.U. and her M.A. from Columbia. Mr. Young, who has a B.S. from Mansfield College and an M.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, teaches geometry and business math and is the sponsor of the Hi-Y Club. Besides teaching biology, Mr. Bucher helps us to have one of the most productive Student Councils in the state. He holds a B.A. from Ashland College and an M.A. from Kent State University. CHESTER A. MANN Miss Hughes sponsors the Biology Club and the newly organized Beacon Club. She teaches biology. Living Science and business English. Miss Hughes is a graduate of Florida Southern College with a B.S. degree. A graduate of the University of Florida with a B.S. degree and an M.A., Mr. Saliba teaches algebra I, business math and applied math. He is faculty advisor to the Wheel Club. Mr. Wessel attended Springfield College and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. While he was in college he played first base on a Baltimore Orioles farm team.
