English An essential part of any high school curriculum, the English department, gives the student an appreciation of literature and provides hint with a foundation in grammar. Seniors learn that reading Shakespeare is not so had after all when they learn it in Miss Loveless’ English IV classes. Miss Loveless, a graduate of F.S.U. with an A.B. degree and of Duke University with an M.A. degree, also teaches creative writing. She is faculty advisor of the Anchor Club and is director of Senior activities. MRS. MARY PECK The Junior class is indebted to Mrs. Peck for her many hours spent in planning for the Junior-Senior reception and prom. Mrs. Peck, who graduated from F.S.U. with an A.B. degree, teaches English III. Mrs. Nolen, who sponsors the Club Council, was graduated with an A.B. degree from Georgia State College. Besides teaching English II, she advises the cheerleaders. MRS. RUTH WOLFE Mrs. Wolfe, who graduated from F.S.U. with an A.B. degree, teaches English III and speech. She devotes much time to speech contests and to the class plays. Many of her outstanding students have won several speech awards. Mrs. Soverns, who teaches English II and III, returned to Winter Haven after teaching in Germany. She has an A.B. degree from Florida Southern College and an M.A. from Duke. MRS. DOROTHY DILLARD ROY WOODS This year a new and very vital department—that of fine and applied arts—has been added to our school program. This department is intended to increase the students’ appreciation of and knowledge in the field of art and to give the talented student an opportunity to improve his skill. Languages The language department teaches the students the basic principles of a foreign language and introduces them to the literature and culture of foreign countries. Mrs. Dillard leaches Lalin I, Latin II and business English. She holds an A.B. degree from F.S.U. Mrt. Dillard sponsors the Latin Club, one of our cultural organizations. Mrs. Connor teaches Spanish I and II this year. She holds an A.B. degree from F.S.U. and sponsors the Spanish Club, another of our cultural organizations. Music Our music program provides relaxation and enjoyment for the entire student body. The director of our high school hand, Mr. Wood, has developed a fine organization. He attended Marion Military Institute and received a rank two certificate from F.S.U. Mr. Sloan, the director of the glee club, has made our concert chorus an outstanding one. A graduate of Vanderbilt University with a B.A., Mr. Sloan has brought his music students appreciation of the fine arts. Art MRS. RUTH CONNOR MARION SLOAN Mrs. Harritt, our art instructor, came to Winter Haven five years ago from Chicago.
